7 MCU Heroes Most Likely To Be Recast After Avengers: Secret Wars

Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel, has hinted that the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars won’t be a complete restart. He’s described it as a “reset,” meaning some characters’ stories might go back to earlier points in their history, while others will continue as normal. This will be particularly noticeable with the X-Men and Fantastic Four, who are joining the main MCU even though they haven’t been part of it until now. This reset could also mean new actors taking on established superhero roles starting in 2027.

Marvel faces the inevitable task of reimagining some of its most popular heroes. While there’s always concern about changing iconic roles, history shows it doesn’t kill a character’s appeal. Consider James Bond, played by six different actors (with another on the way), or Superman and Batman, each portrayed by multiple performers. To keep the Marvel Cinematic Universe thriving beyond the Multiverse Saga, Marvel will likely need to recast some key heroes in the coming years.

7) Loki

Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal of Loki over the past ten years is arguably one of the MCU’s biggest successes. He transformed Loki from a mischievous villain into a fan-favorite hero, and now the character has immense power over the entire multiverse. Luckily, the comics have a long history of Loki changing and reinventing himself, even altering his appearance, so the Disney+ series has already established a precedent for this. There’s no reason the movies can’t continue that trend, especially if Thor and Asgard return to their classic roots as one of the nine realms. In that case, the god of mischief would naturally need to be around, operating from the shadows.

6) T’Challa

Following Chadwick Boseman’s passing, a major question has been who would take on the role of Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Wakanda Forever hinted at a successor, the upcoming Secret Wars movie and its planned universe reset could speed up those plans. It’s probable that a new actor will become the MCU’s T’Challa after Secret Wars. Whether this actor will play T’Challa’s grown-up son, as seen at the end of Wakanda Forever, or a different version of the Black Panther from another universe – potentially connected to the Fantastic Four – is still unknown. However, this iconic hero needs to return after the universe is reset.

5) Cyclops

James Marsden is likely to reprise his role as Cyclops in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, but it’s becoming clear that Marvel wants to establish the X-Men as independent characters within the MCU after Secret Wars. While there’s been a lot of speculation about which X-Men will be featured, one character is almost certainly going to be central to their new stories. Although Marsden has played Cyclops before, and Tye Sheridan took on the role in previous films, the MCU will likely cast a completely new actor for this iconic character.

4) Gambit

Channing Tatum is expected to return as Gambit, a role he originally played in Deadpool & Wolverine, after the character seemed unlikely to reappear. Despite being underutilized in the previous X-Men films from Fox (with a brief appearance by Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Gambit remains a fan favorite, especially from the popular 1990s X-Men era that Marvel Studios is now adapting. With plans potentially underway for a Rogue character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many believe Gambit will follow soon after.

3) Professor X

It’s getting hard to keep seeing Patrick Stewart play Professor X and then have his character die, especially if the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday follows the pattern established in movies like X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Logan, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While a new X-Men team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs a Cyclops, it’s hard to imagine one without Professor X, particularly now that they have a chance to start fresh. We don’t yet know who will play the role, but given how important Charles Xavier is to the X-Men story, it’s likely a new actor will be cast.

2) Captain America

The first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday showed Chris Evans back as Steve Rogers, but Marvel can’t rely on bringing him back too often. While it seems probable he’ll appear in Secret Wars, it’s highly unlikely he’ll continue playing Captain America in the MCU after the universe resets. Steve Rogers is too important to Marvel for them to erase him completely. Even with Sam Wilson now as Captain America, the MCU could easily support having two different heroes with the title. In fact, having two Captain Americas could open up interesting new story possibilities, perhaps even another version of the Civil War storyline.

1) Iron Man

It’s hard to picture anyone else as Iron Man, but with Robert Downey Jr. now playing Doctor Doom, it’s time for a new actor to take on the role. Just like in the comics, where Tony Stark’s backstory changes, the movies need to recast Iron Man to keep the story fresh. The idea of the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuing for years without an Iron Man feels wrong and would be a missed opportunity. Bringing Tony Stark back – with a different actor – isn’t just about regaining a popular character, it’s about unlocking new story possibilities, and that should be Marvel’s top priority.
