While most Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes rely on incredible powers, some of the most beloved and impactful characters don’t have any special abilities at all. Figures like Captain America, the Hulk, and Scarlet Witch are practically unbeatable because of their powers. But it’s arguably even more remarkable when a character becomes a hero without any inherent superhuman gifts.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen some surprising heroes rise to prominence. While a few started as smaller characters and became unexpectedly influential, others, like Sam Wilson (Captain America), Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), and Tony Stark (Iron Man), became central figures despite not being born with superpowers. As the MCU continues to introduce more characters with powers, it’s worth remembering some of its best heroes who relied on skill and ingenuity instead.
7) Phil Coulson

While the TV show Agents of SHIELD isn’t officially part of the main Marvel Cinematic Universe storyline, many fans still have a strong attachment to Clark Gregg’s character, Phil Coulson. Coulson was a key figure in the early days of the MCU, appearing in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, and a couple of short films before seemingly dying in The Avengers. His death, at the hands of Loki (Tom Hiddleston), was actually what motivated the Avengers to team up and fight together. Without Coulson’s sacrifice, the Avengers might never have been created, making him a hugely important character in the MCU.
6) Darcy Lewis & Jimmy Woo

Darcy Lewis and Jimmy Woo are both capable individuals, but they really shined when they teamed up in the 2021 series WandaVision. Working with SWORD, they investigated the strange events surrounding Westview, New Jersey, and used their expertise to unravel the mystery behind the WandaVision broadcast. They also assisted Monica Rambeau in trying to reach Wanda Maximoff. Before this, Darcy played a key role in helping Thor save the world on multiple occasions, and Jimmy Woo seems poised for bigger things in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
5) Sam Wilson’s Captain America

As a huge cinema fan, I’ve been really intrigued by the discussion around Sam Wilson taking on the Captain America mantle. It’s fascinating because, unlike Chris Evans’ Captain America who had that super-soldier serum, Sam doesn’t have any inherent superpowers. He’s relying on his incredible skill, peak physical condition, and the amazing tech he’s acquired – like that vibranium armor from Wakanda and his updated wing-suit. Basically, he’s a regular guy, but incredibly capable! And it’s awesome to see him prove himself, defeating powerful villains like the Leader, Sidewinder, and even the Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World. It really sets the stage for him leading the new Avengers team, which I’m incredibly excited about.
4) Peggy Carter

Steve Rogers, Captain America, consistently chose to be around people who were strong and capable, even if they didn’t have superpowers. While Sam Wilson later became the new Captain America, Steve’s love story with Peggy Carter, set in the 1940s, remained important throughout his life, even after she passed away. Peggy was crucial to the creation of Captain America – she saved his life multiple times in Captain America: The First Avenger. Although the Agent Carter series isn’t officially part of the main Marvel Cinematic Universe storyline (like Agents of SHIELD), Peggy has always been portrayed as a brave, confident, and impressive hero.
3) Natasha Romanoff’s Black Widow

Scarlett Johansson’s character, Natasha Romanoff, started as a highly trained assassin known as Black Widow and later became a valued SHIELD agent and one of the MCU’s most skilled and brave heroes. Joining the Avengers in 2012, she proved her worth despite lacking any natural superpowers, relying instead on her exceptional fighting abilities. Her courage, especially her sacrifice on Vormir in Avengers: Endgame, truly set her apart. Now, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova is carrying on Natasha’s legacy as the new Black Widow and a leader for the next generation of Avengers.
2) Nick Fury

Though characters like Peggy Carter and Phil Coulson were essential, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury has arguably had the biggest impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After battling Skrulls alongside Captain Marvel in 1995, Fury began assembling the Avengers and became a key ally to Earth’s heroes. He consistently provided a sense of stability, even when his methods were unclear. Despite lacking superpowers, Nick Fury’s influence dramatically shaped the paths of many heroes in the MCU.
1) Tony Stark’s Iron Man

It’s amazing how much of an impact Tony Stark, despite having no superpowers, had on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While other ordinary characters have helped the heroes, Stark used his incredible intelligence, strong family bonds, and bravery to save the universe. Robert Downey Jr. became the face of the MCU during the Infinity Saga, significantly shaping the franchise both as an actor and through his portrayal of the character. Stark repeatedly saved the world, ultimately defeating Thanos by using the Infinity Stones in a selfless sacrifice.
Tony Stark remains a hugely important character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the franchise after a six-year break, but in a surprising new role. He briefly appeared as Doctor Doom in the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and will reprise that role in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars movies. This means Downey Jr. will have played both a major hero and a frightening villain in the MCU, and fans are excited to see his portrayal of Doctor Doom.
