7 Moments From the MCU That Set Up Doomsday/Secret Wars

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is heading towards two major films: Avengers: Doomsday in one year, and Avengers: Secret Wars in two years. Secret Wars has been a long-term goal for Marvel, and originally, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was planned as the lead-in, established through the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania movie. Though plans changed, Ant-Man still led to the Loki series on Disney+, which was designed to set up both Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. Even with the changes, Loki still effectively prepares the story for Secret Wars. Marvel had to adjust its plans, but now everything seems ready for the next big storyline.

As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve been keeping track of everything leading up to Avengers: Secret Wars, and it’s been wild! From the crazy multiverse stuff to finally seeing the Fantastic Four and X-Men join the mix, there have been so many key moments building towards this epic event.

7) Spider-Man Almost Breaks The Multiverse

Though Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania introduced Kang as the major villain, Marvel began building the larger story two years prior with Spider-Man: No Way Home. When Peter Parker attempted a spell with Doctor Strange to hide his identity, it accidentally created openings to other universes, bringing Spider-Man characters from Sony’s films into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As Doctor Strange warned, this could destabilize the multiverse, and that moment effectively kicked off the Multiverse Saga.

6) Doctor Strange Learns About the Incursions

Following the chaos Spider-Man caused with his multiverse travel, Doctor Strange faced a huge fight to prevent the entire multiverse from falling apart. In Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, he met America Chavez, who can travel between universes, and then tried to stop Wanda Maximoff from jumping to another Earth to take over another version of herself. This led him to the Illuminati, and he discovered that even traveling to different universes could destroy them in an event called an Incursion – a key concept for longtime readers of Marvel’s Secret Wars comics. The film also revealed that alternate versions of heroes exist on many different Earths, and these versions can be quite different from the ones we know in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

5) Loki Discovering The Branches at the End of Time

The first season of Loki introduced the idea of the multiverse and showed Loki meeting a version of himself from another reality, Sylvie. He also learned about the Time Variance Authority, who were trying to punish him for his time-traveling actions in Avengers: Endgame. However, the second season, released in 2023, had a much bigger impact on the overall story. It was initially intended to build up Kang as the main villain, following Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and revealed that Kang was manipulating events from the end of time. Although Kang’s role has changed, the season established Loki as the new guardian of the multiverse, responsible for protecting its different timelines. But, as shown in Secret Wars, Loki ultimately won’t be able to succeed in this role.

4) Monica Rambeau Ends Up In X-Men’s Universe

Following the finale of Loki Season 2, The Marvels introduced a storyline that connects to the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The film centers around Captain Marvel, Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau discovering and attempting to close a tear in reality that threatened Earth. While they were successful, Monica seemingly sacrificed herself to do so. However, the surprise came when Monica awoke on an alternate Earth – one where the X-Men exist, including a version of herself called Binary and The Beast, as seen in the older X-Men films from Fox. This event was essentially a near-miss ‘Incursion’ – a collision of realities – that they managed to prevent.

3) Deadpool Hops Through the Multiverse

In 2024, Marvel released just one movie as they began planning the future of the Avengers without the Kang character. This involved introducing a new storyline connected to the Loki Disney+ series, the world of the Deadpool movie, and an alternate Earth where all the X-Men had perished. Deadpool was traveling between realities, similar to Doctor Strange, which proved to be incredibly risky. Ultimately, both Deadpool and Wolverine made it through, but the Time Variance Authority was left in chaos, and the threat of Incursions still loomed large.

2) Doctor Doom Finds Franklin Richards

The release order of Marvel movies can be a little confusing. While Thunderbolts came out before The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the events of Fantastic Four actually happen earlier in the timeline. This film also introduced the concept of alternate Earths within the MCU, something we hadn’t seen since Deadpool. The ending of Thunderbolts was crucial because Reed Richards discovered dimensional travel, paving the way for future events. Specifically, the post-credits scene showed Doctor Doom making his first appearance, speaking to young Franklin Richards. This sets the stage for Avengers: Doomsday, which will then lead into Avengers: Secret Wars.

1) The Fantastic Four Heads To MCU In Thunderbolts*

The movie released before The Fantastic Four: First Steps lays the groundwork for the upcoming Doomsday film. It shows the Thunderbolts becoming the New Avengers, but also reveals that Sam Wilson was leading a separate team of Avengers. Following the events of Secret Invasion, people are fearful of aliens, which will be important when the Fantastic Four and X-Men arrive on Earth. This tension will escalate into a massive battle in Doomsday, ultimately culminating in Doctor Doom destroying reality and creating Battlworld – setting the stage for Avengers: Secret Wars.
