After seven films, the Scream series, much like Friday the 13th, has given us some truly unforgettable and original on-screen deaths. Today, we’re looking back at all seven movies to highlight the kills that feel genuinely new. We’re focusing on creativity, so a death simply being famous or well-executed in terms of suspense isn’t enough to make the list. For example, Dewey shooting out the glass in Scream 3 while Ghostface chases Jennifer Jolie doesn’t qualify, as the stabbing itself isn’t particularly inventive.
The phone calls and chases involving Casey Becker in Scream and Cici Cooper in Scream 2 are brilliantly tense and have become iconic horror moments, but they don’t quite reach the level of true originality we’re looking for—though Casey’s gruesome death came very close. We should also consider the deaths of Ghostface themselves. Matthew Lillard’s character getting crushed by a TV is unforgettable and definitely earns a spot on the list. Warning: Spoilers for Scream 7 ahead.
7) Stu Macher in Scream (1996)

Okay, hear me out, but Stu Macher is, hands down, the most charming Ghostface. It’s weird to say, I know, given he, you know, brutally attacked someone after a breakup and is a killer, but Matthew Lillard just brings something special. I always feel genuinely bad when anything happens to him, even though he’s the bad guy! It’s just hard to see that performance end.
It was a shocking end for Stu. Though he was already fatally wounded by Billy Loomis – Stu was always meant to be the scapegoat – it was Sidney Prescott who ultimately delivered the final, crushing blow: a heavy, old-fashioned box TV dropped on his head. He’d always been attracted to Sidney, but she definitely didn’t feel the same way.
6) Phil Stevens in Scream 2

Sure, Phil gets a blade, which isn’t uncommon in Scream. But to the ear? You can just feel his pain.
What really sticks with me about Phil’s death in Scream 2 isn’t just where he’s stabbed, but how it happens. It was such a clever move to have Ghostface hiding in the bathroom stall, quietly chuckling to himself – it turns out it was Mickey! – and then to strike when Phil got close. The location itself was key; we almost had a great bathroom scene in the first Scream, and this one finally delivered on that potential. It’s a genuinely memorable set piece.
5) Dewey Riley in Scream (2022)

While Dewey’s death is shocking and memorable, that’s not the only reason it stands out. Randy’s death was also very impactful, but Dewey’s death is particularly gruesome and disturbing, making it uniquely memorable.
Ghostface, played by Amber Freeman, appeared to be defeated, but Dewey, true to form, tried to finish the killer off with a gunshot. However, Ghostface quickly recovered and brutally attacked Dewey with a knife, stabbing him multiple times and lifting him off the ground with the force of the blows. It was a shocking and violent end for such a beloved character, but it certainly left a lasting impression.
4) Hannah Thurman in Scream 7

Mckenna Grace quickly became a fan favorite in the latest Scream movie, but her time on screen was tragically short. The moment we see her lifted by wires, it becomes clear how her character will meet their end.
You’re right to think that, and it creates a truly helpless feeling for both Hannah and the viewers – it’s very effective. While the Scream franchise has featured shocking deaths before, this was the first time Ghostface seemed to savor the torment, taking pleasure in the killing. Scream 7 might not be the strongest film in the series overall, but it’s definitely among the best when it comes to creatively terrifying kills, and Hannah’s isn’t even the most shocking one in the movie.
3) Amber Freeman in Scream (2022)

Many of the Ghostface killers meet a very violent end. For example, Mickey Altieri in Scream 2 is shot around twelve times. The two Ghostface characters killed in the 2022 Scream reboot also die in brutal fashion.
As a horror fan, I was genuinely shocked by the brutality in this film. Richie Kirsch meets a truly gruesome end at the hands of Samantha Carpenter – she basically just attacks him relentlessly with a blade and then shoots him. But Amber Freeman… wow. Mikey Madison, who played her, really goes through it. It’s incredibly disturbing – she’s doused in lighter fluid and set on fire, then shot multiple times. Even after all that, she keeps coming, and ultimately Tara Carpenter has to put her down with a shot to the head. It’s intense, to say the least, especially considering Mikey Madison was also a victim of fiery demise in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood!
2) Lucas Bowden in Scream 7

The most shocking moment in Scream 7 is Lucas Bowden’s death – especially when you learn who the killer is: his own mother, Jessica.
This is easily one of the most violent kills in the series. Jessica brutally drags her victim across a bar, places him beside Chloe Parker’s body, lifts him up, and impales him through the back of the head with the pointed end of a beer tap. She didn’t hesitate, even though it was her own son. In terms of originality, it’s the most creative kill in the seventh film. It only falls slightly short of being number one because it bears a resemblance to a kill from the original My Bloody Valentine.
1) Tatum Riley in Scream (1996)

The fight between Tatum and Ghostface (Billy Loomis) is one of the most memorable and nerve-wracking moments in the entire series. It’s incredibly suspenseful, and viewers always find themselves anxiously hoping she can make it through that small garage door.
However, that doesn’t happen. Instead, Ghostface lifts the garage door, crushing Tatum’s head against it. The camera quickly shows her head flattening, and later, Sidney is horrified to find her best friend hanging there, the garage door still not having fallen. It’s a particularly shocking kill because the party inside continues as if nothing is wrong. We return to the house, but the scene keeps bringing us back to the tragic image of Tatum.
Okay, as a huge Scream fan, I’m genuinely curious: what do you think is the most creative and memorable kill in the whole series? Seriously, let me know in the comments, and let’s talk about it over on the ComicBook Forum – join the discussion now!
