7 Most Evil Things Mister Sinister Ever Did in Comics

Mister Sinister is one of the X-Men’s most dangerous enemies, responsible for causing immense suffering. Originally, he was Nathaniel Essex, a scientist in Victorian times who foresaw the rise of mutants and was himself transformed by Apocalypse. However, the Mister Sinister the X-Men fight isn’t the original Essex – he’s one of several clones created in 1895, including a clone of his wife. Strangely, none of these clones realized they were duplicates; each believed they were the original Nathaniel Essex.

Ever since then, Mister Sinister has been focused on controlling his own future. He’s manipulated the lives of numerous mutants to get what he wants, and his methods are often cruel and disturbed.

7) Destroyed Cyclops’ Childhood

Mister Sinister became fixated on Scott Summers, and his interest began when Scott was a young child at the State Home for Foundlings in Nebraska. After Scott and his brother Alex survived a plane crash that killed their parents, Sinister took the comatose Scott into his care and secretly experimented on him. He then placed Scott in the orphanage while sending Alex away, and proceeded to control and manipulate every part of Scott’s upbringing.

Scott eventually escaped, and Professor X took him in, saving him from Mister Sinister’s influence and making him one of the first X-Men. Sinister discovered that the Summers and Grey families held the key to creating a powerful mutant who could fulfill his ambitions. Because of this, he deliberately made Scott’s life miserable, and continued to do so even after Scott fled.

6) Created Madelyne Pryor To Force Cable’s Birth

Mister Sinister obsessively monitored Cyclops and his family, going so far as to move to Alaska to live near his grandparents. He gathered extensive genetic information on the X-Men, but found he couldn’t obtain samples from Jean Grey. Sinister attempted to create a clone of Kean, but the clone was born without any mutant abilities. Before he could destroy the failed clone, Jean Grey tragically died during the Dark Phoenix Saga.

Determined to manipulate events, Mister Sinister arranged for a clone named Madelyne Pryor to meet Scott Summers, hoping they would fall in love. His plan worked – they married and had a son named Nate. While Sinister had correctly predicted Nate’s birth and powerful mutant abilities (becoming Cable), this ultimately backfired. Instead of helping Sinister, Cable became another challenge to overcome.

7) Caused Inferno

Mister Sinister’s plans for Madelyne Pryor backfired, nearly leading to global destruction. When Jean Grey came back to life, Scott Summers went to find her, leaving Madelyne alone in Alaska with their infant son. Sinister then sent a team of assassins, the Marauders, to abduct the baby and kill Madelyne. They took the baby, named Nate, but Madelyne unexpectedly survived and was left in the hospital.

This event awakened Madelyne’s hidden abilities, which mirrored those of Jean Grey, and fueled her transformation into the Goblin Queen. Bitter about Scott Summers returning to Jean and believing her child had died, Madelyne resolved to destroy the world. Even after discovering her son, Nate, was still alive, she attempted – though ultimately failed – to sacrifice him to the demon N’astirh, in a particularly grim chapter of the X-Men’s history.

4) Helped Bring Down Krakoa

For a time, the island of Krakoa offered mutants a secure home, free from human prejudice and hostility. Unfortunately, that peace didn’t last. Mutants once again faced persecution and were hunted, and much of this is due to the actions of Mister Sinister. Despite being part of the ruling Quiet Council, meant to protect Krakoa, Sinister secretly worked to undermine it.

The story unfolded initially in Sins of Sinister and concluded in Fall of X, revealing Mister Sinister as a mutant determined to prevent any happy endings. His actions caused the creation of numerous timelines and alternate realities, frequently with devastating consequences.

3) Unleashed the Legacy Virus

The Legacy Virus was a devastating threat to mutants. It began when Mister Sinister abducted Cyclops and Jean Grey, using Apocalypse’s Horsemen. He then swapped them with Stryfe and the Mutant Liberation Front for a sample of the Summers family’s genetic code. Sinister later double-crossed Stryfe by revealing his true identity to the X-Men. Surprisingly, when Sinister opened the container he expected to hold the virus, it appeared to be empty.

Despite security measures, the deadly Legacy Virus was unleashed. Stryfe orchestrated this event, resulting in the deaths of many mutants. Though Beast developed a cure, it took Colossus’s ultimate sacrifice to deliver it and stop the virus. While Stryfe carried out the plan, Mister Sinister was manipulated into enabling it.

2) Worked Alongside Nazis in World War II

The Nazis rank among the most horrific groups in history, and Mister Sinister was a truly evil figure who collaborated with them during World War II. Working as a scientist for the Nazis, he partnered with Josef Mengele – a man known for his occult interests and aiding Adolf Hitler – and began conducting experiments on children at the Auschwitz concentration camp. It was during this time that Max Eisenhardt directly observed Sinister’s cruel work, which sparked a lifelong hatred of him and ultimately contributed to the origins of Magneto.

Around this time, Mister Sinister began to take an interest in Namor. Namor had fought with the Invaders during World War II and was a mutant, making him a subject of particular fascination. It was also during this period that he encountered John Greycrow, a connection that would later lead to further experimentation during the Vietnam War.

1) Ordered the Mutant Massacre

Mister Sinister’s most horrific act was ordering the mass killing of the Morlocks. These mutants lived hidden beneath New York City because their physical differences made it unsafe for them to be in public. During the ‘Mutant Massacre’ storyline, a team of mutants called the Marauders attacked their underground tunnels, killing nearly all of the Morlocks. Only a small number were rescued by the X-Men, X-Factor, and Thor.

The trouble started because a different version of the Beast had conducted experiments on the Morlocks. This Beast had previously studied under Mister Sinister on Earth. Since this twisted the original Mister Sinister’s work, he decided the Morlocks had to be eliminated to prevent similar experiments on Earth-616. He even attempted to finish the job by having Malice take control of an X-Men member, but the plan failed, leaving Malice permanently stuck inside Polaris. The mass murder of these innocent mutants remains Mister Sinister’s most heinous act in Marvel Comics.
