The world of *Demon Slayer* is incredibly harsh. Set in early 20th-century Japan, with stories reaching back centuries, it’s populated by creatures that were once human, now transformed into violent monsters driven by base instinct. While these demons cause destruction and fear, the series reveals a surprising truth: their origins are often deeply tragic. *Demon Slayer* truly excels at showing the heartbreaking stories behind the demons’ transformations, reminding us that each one was once a person who felt pain, love, and loss.
Knowing what these demons went through doesn’t justify their evil deeds, but it does help us understand why they are the way they are, making their eventual downfall all the more tragic.
WARNING! The following article contains massive spoilers for Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle.
7) Spider Demon Mother

The Spider Demon Mother was a gentle woman who Rui cruelly transformed into a demon, making her part of his artificial family. She suffered constant abuse and torment because she couldn’t fulfill Rui’s idea of what a mother should be. Forced to obey him, she lived in constant fear of his harsh punishments.
Even though she had suffered terribly, she secretly wished for a real family and some peace. When Tanjiro discovered her, she thanked him for his compassion and saw death as a welcome end to her pain. Because she desperately wanted to escape Rui’s control and the abuse she’d experienced, her death felt like a release, not a tragedy.
6) Lady Tamayo

Lady Tamayo was among the first people transformed into a demon by Muzan Kibutsuji, a change she didn’t want. Overwhelmed by her new instincts, she accidentally killed her husband and children, an act that filled her with immense sorrow and regret. This led her to reject Muzan’s control, especially after Yoriichi Tsugikuni nearly defeated him.
For centuries, Tamayo devoted her life to finding a cure for the demon transformation, hoping to help others and ultimately defeat Muzan. Driven by the pain of her past, she sought to make amends for something she was forced to do. In a selfless act, Tamayo sacrificed herself to distract Muzan while the Demon Slayer Corps entered the Infinity Castle, giving her allies a crucial opportunity to defeat the Upper Moons with Muzan weakened.
5) Kyogai (Drum Demon)

Kyogai dreamed of being a writer and dedicated himself completely to his work. However, his mentor consistently criticized and rejected his writing, making him feel worthless and unimportant. He desperately wanted recognition for his talent, but sadly, it never came. This constant rejection and lack of validation deeply affected him.
He desperately wanted people to notice his talents, and this need controlled him. Muzan, recognizing his unhappiness, gave him the power he longed for. Even as a demon, he remained fixated on the rhythm of his drums, which represented his wish for others to appreciate his creative work. Kyogai only found contentment near the end of his life when Tanjiro praised his music, finally acknowledging its beauty.
4. Gyutaro

Gyutaro had a miserable childhood, growing up poor alongside his sister, Ume. People found his appearance unsettling and he was often bullied, not just by other children, but by adults too. This harsh treatment left him bitter, convinced he deserved the suffering he experienced. His younger sister was his only comfort and the only person who showed him love.
The discovery of Ume, severely burned and near death, pushed Gyutaro to his breaking point. As he desperately carried her through the city, pleading for assistance, no one offered help. It was during this terrifying ordeal, fearing he would lose his sister, that Doma, Upper Rank Two, extended an offer of a new beginning. This experience cemented Gyutaro’s bitterness and warped affection for Ume, becoming the core of his identity as a demon.
3) Daki

Daki wasn’t always a demon; she began life as Ume, a beautiful girl growing up in the poor Rashomon Riverbank. Despite her looks attracting attention, her childhood was difficult, filled with mockery and jealousy. After losing her mother to illness, she was raised by her older brother, Gyutaro. She quickly learned that her beauty could be both an advantage and a threat, and she became fiercely protective of him, a protectiveness he returned.
Her life changed forever when she blinded a samurai in self-defense against his unwanted attention. Due to her social status, she faced a brutal punishment and was burned alive. Her brother, Gyutaro, desperately tried to save her, carrying her to an alley where they were discovered by Muzan. They both became demons and rose to the rank of Upper Moon Six, but Daki always depended on Gyutaro, even after becoming monsters.
2) Akaza

Before becoming the powerful demon Akaza (Upper Moon Three) in *Demon Slayer*, he was once known as Hakuji. He lived with his very sick father in a small town, and they struggled to afford food and medicine. To keep his father alive, Hakuji turned to stealing. Tragically, after Hakuji was caught and beaten, his father took his own life to relieve his son of the burden of caring for him. Devastated, Hakuji was taken in by a martial arts master who offered to train him. He found a new sense of purpose and fell in love with the master’s gentle daughter, Koyuki, and they planned to marry and run the dojo together.
Hakuji’s short-lived peace was destroyed when a competing martial arts school poisoned his dojo’s water source, killing his teacher and a close friend named Koyuki. Consumed by sorrow and fury, Hakuji single-handedly killed everyone at the rival school. This intense grief and rage attracted Muzan, who transformed him into Akaza-a demon who lost all memory of his human life, only regaining it briefly during his final fight with Tanjiro and Giyuu.
1) Rui

Rui, once a weak and often sick child, struggled with constant pain and dreamed of a healthy, normal life. When he was at his lowest point, Muzan offered him a solution. Muzan gave Rui demon blood, which granted him incredible power, but also transformed him into a monster. Overwhelmed and losing control, Rui tragically killed his parents and then became fixated on finding a real family.
Driven by a deep longing for a family he never had, Rui created a false one on Mount Natagumo, compelling other demons to play the roles of his parents and siblings. He harshly punished anyone who didn’t obey him, wrongly believing that control and fear could create true family bonds. This unfulfilled desire was the source of his cruelty and ultimately led to his downfall. Even in his final moments, after being defeated, Rui imagined his fabricated parents and briefly felt their love. They forgave him, welcoming him home – a truly tragic and moving scene.
