Marvel Comics is famous for its incredible characters, and a key to their early success was maintaining consistency within their stories. They pioneered the idea of a shared universe, where characters and events connected across different comic books. However, with so many writers and artists contributing over the years, some inconsistencies were inevitable. This problem has become more noticeable recently, as Marvel has prioritized new ideas over strict adherence to established continuity since Joe Quesada’s time as editor-in-chief.

Inconsistencies in a character’s portrayal can frustrate readers and ruin their enjoyment. Occasionally, these flaws are smoothed over, becoming part of the character’s personality. Here are seven Marvel heroes and villains who suffer from constantly changing, and often pointless, characterizations.

7) Mister Fantastic

Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, is arguably Marvel’s smartest character. He leads the Fantastic Four on incredibly dangerous missions, but his personality is surprisingly inconsistent. Writers often portray him in different ways – sometimes as a dedicated but distant father, other times as a perfect family man, and always with a strong focus on his work. He can be a noble hero like Captain America, or a more ruthless pragmatist willing to do whatever it takes. Some interpretations even suggest he’s on the autism spectrum, while older depictions, penned by Stan Lee, showcase a problematic and misogynistic side. It’s always a surprise to see which version of Reed Richards appears in a Fantastic Four comic.

6) Norman Osborn

The Green Goblin, Norman Osborn, is Spider-Man’s most iconic enemy and has deeply impacted his life. Over the years, writers have portrayed him in many different ways, making his character quite inconsistent. Sometimes he’s a full-blown psychopath, other times an unpredictable but brilliant mind. He’s been depicted as both a ruthless crime lord and a powerful corporate villain. He even has heroic moments, but is often portrayed as truly evil. This constant shift in personality makes it difficult to pin down who Norman Osborn really is. Is he the insane Green Goblin? The corrupt businessman? Or Spider-Man’s friend? Since his return, each appearance seems to offer a new and different version of the character, leaving fans with varying interpretations.

5) Cyclops

Cyclops is widely considered the X-Men’s best leader, even if I personally prefer Storm or Wolverine. However, his character hasn’t always been consistent. He started as a very traditional, straightforward hero, and that remained his defining trait for a long time. Lately, though, writers have shifted his personality quite a bit. This creates issues because some still write him as the older, more conventional version. It’s understandable – for decades, he was a rather bland character, only becoming more rebellious and radical in the 2010s, which is likely why Wolverine quickly became the more popular character. This inconsistency was particularly noticeable during the Krakoa Era, where he often reverted to his original, less dynamic self, which was disappointing. Currently, Cyclops feels like a mix of these two versions, fluctuating between them depending on the specific storyline.

4) MODOK

The Avengers often fight unusual villains, and MODOK is one of the most bizarre. His name, which stands for “Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing,” suggests a truly dangerous foe. But surprisingly, MODOK has become more of a joke. His ridiculous appearance has overshadowed his potential as a powerful villain, turning him into a comedic character. Like many characters, his portrayal depends on the specific story, but it’s always a little disappointing to see a humorous take on MODOK.

3) Spider-Man

Spider-Man is Marvel’s most recognizable hero, and the company tries to maintain a consistent portrayal of him. Often, this means limiting his character development, but that hasn’t stopped writers from making mistakes. A prime example is his fight scenes – while he usually defeats powerful villains, recent stories, like the one by Zeb Wells, have shown him losing to weaker opponents like Vulture and Tombstone. Many fans use the “Spider-Man holds back” meme to explain these inconsistencies in his powers, but it’s become frustrating. Beyond that, his personality also varies – sometimes he’s a lighthearted jokester, and other times he’s overly serious and brooding.

2) Wolverine

Wolverine is a fantastic character, but it seems like different writers have very different ideas about who he is. While he’s evolved over the years, he often gets written as the angry, isolated fighter he was in the early 90s. Right now, there are multiple versions of Wolverine appearing in comics – the one in Saladin Ahmed’s series feels like an outdated retread, while the Wolverine in Uncanny X-Men is a strong improvement. Plus, every time he guest-stars, his personality and abilities change. Sometimes he’s defeating incredibly powerful opponents like the Hulk, and other times he’s losing to weaker characters. Many writers also seem to forget he’s a highly skilled martial artist, instead portraying him as a purely animalistic brawler. As a big Wolverine fan, this inconsistency has unfortunately diminished my enjoyment of his recent appearances.

1) Hank Pym

Honestly, it’s tough to pin down who Hank Pym really is. One minute he’s this brilliant, dependable scientist and hero, and the next he’s struggling with serious issues and making really bad decisions. Some stories show him as a leader, others as someone who constantly messes up. And then there’s the really dark stuff… it’s hard to forget. The one thing that always seems true is that Janet van Dyne, the Wasp, is the stronger, more capable hero. It’s frustrating because even the writers can’t seem to decide what his heroic identity should be – is he Ant-Man, Giant-Man, Goliath, Yellowjacket, or something else entirely? He’s just…inconsistent, to say the least.
