7 Most Powerful Alien Heroes on Earth in DC Comics

DC Comics is famous for its many alien characters, including some of the most powerful heroes in the comic book universe. This tradition started with DC’s very first superhero – an alien sent to Earth and raised to be a symbol of hope and goodness. Since then, numerous aliens have come to Earth, fighting alongside human heroes to protect the planet. However, there are also dangerous alien villains like Darkseid, Brainiac, General Zod, and Mongul who have attempted to take over the world.

Here’s a ranking of the most powerful alien heroes who have protected Earth, from the most famous to some lesser-known favorites.

7) Mister Miracle

Mister Miracle is a well-known, though somewhat niche, alien hero in the DC Universe. Scott Free, originally from the planet Apokolips, fled to Earth with his wife, Big Barda. His story is complicated: he’s the son of a powerful leader, but was exchanged as part of a peace deal with Apokolips. While there, he suffered under the cruel Granny Goodness until Barda rescued him. As a New God, Scott is effectively immortal, incredibly intelligent, and possesses a unique ability called the Alpha Effect – allowing him to control energy and even revive the deceased.

6) Hawkgirl

Hawkgirl gained widespread recognition through the Justice League animated series in the 1990s, and has since become a significant character in DC Comics. The name ‘Hawkgirl’ has been used by multiple characters, originally stemming from the reincarnated spirit of Chay-Ara, who was destined to reunite with her love, Prince Khufu, across lifetimes. More recently, Hawkgirl has been depicted as a Thanagarian, first as Shayera Hol and then as her niece, Kendra Saunders. Introduced to the DC Universe by Superman as a member of the Justice League, she’s incredibly powerful, possessing rapid healing, sharp wings, and enhanced abilities due to her connection with Nth Metal.

5) Starfire

Starfire is a well-known alien superhero in the DC universe, gaining popularity through the Teen Titans cartoon and films. She first appeared in the comic book ‘The New Teen Titans’ in the 1980s, which helped revitalize DC Comics after a period of lighter, less serious storylines. While a 2011 reboot of the comics, known as the New 52, initially presented her character in an overly sexualized way, this was later changed. Originally a princess from the planet Tamaran, Starfire possesses incredible strength and abilities. She can fire energy blasts called Starbolts and instantly learn any language simply by touching someone.

4) Hawkman

Hawkman, similar to Hawkgirl, is an alien. However, his story is a bit different. Carter Hall was an archaeologist who repeatedly lived and died, always returning as the hero Hawkman. He’s actually the latest version of Katar Hol, a Thanagarian, and the final reincarnation of Ktar Deathbringer, who once served a powerful, ancient being. Like Hawkgirl, Hawkman gains his abilities from Nth Metal. He fights with a mace that he can control using his mind, and he’s incredibly long-lived – in one version of events, he even lived into the 40th century.

3) Supergirl

Fans of the DC Universe are getting a deeper look into the story of Supergirl. The new movie will be based on the comic book Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and will explain how her home city, Argo City, survived Krypton’s destruction. The city floated in space until a dangerous radiation leak tragically killed everyone she knew before she was sent away to Earth, eventually joining her cousin Superman. Like Superman, Supergirl possesses incredible strength, speed, and resilience. However, her difficult experiences have made her a bit more assertive. In terms of overall power, she and Superman are fairly evenly matched.

2) Martian Manhunter

Superman is often thought of as the strongest hero in the DC universe, but Martian Manhunter is his equal, and arguably even more powerful overall. Like Superman, he possesses incredible strength, can fly, and is incredibly durable. But Martian Manhunter has two abilities Superman lacks: he can shapeshift into anyone and can both read and change people’s minds. Despite these powers, Martian Manhunter’s raw strength isn’t quite on par with Superman’s.

1) Superman

In DC Comics, Superman is the most powerful alien on Earth. But he rarely uses his full strength when fighting. No human could defeat him, and only incredibly powerful beings like Darkseid or Doomsday pose a real challenge. As seen in the Injustice comics, Superman is unmatched when he truly lets go, which is why Batman worries about him losing control – no one could stop him if he turned evil.
