7 Most Powerful Avengers Introduced Since 2000

The Avengers are Marvel’s original super team, first appearing in Avengers #1 with a lineup including Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, and the Wasp. The concept was to unite Marvel’s strongest heroes against threats too big for any one of them. Hulk and Captain America later became long-standing members. While the team has seen many heroes come and go, some of its most recent members weren’t even created until after the year 2000, showing how the Avengers continue to evolve.

This list highlights the strongest Avengers heroes who either debuted in Marvel comics after the year 2000, or were previously established characters finally appearing in comics this century. It includes both brand new teenage heroes and those with a longer history.

7) Jessica Jones

Although she feels like a long-standing character, Jessica Jones actually first appeared in Marvel Comics in 2001, in the first issue of Brian Michael Bendis’s Alias. There was a later story claiming she made a brief, unnamed appearance way back in 1963’s Amazing Spider-Man #4, but this was added to the story after the fact and doesn’t count as her true debut. Her real first appearance was in Alias.

Jessica Jones’s life took a dark turn when Killgrave gained control of her, forcing her into a fight with the Avengers. The battle ended with her seriously injured by Vision. Afterward, the Avengers invited her to join their team, but she refused. Later, she met Luke Cage, and they began a relationship, eventually leading both of them to become members of the New Avengers. Jessica’s primary superpower is incredible strength.

6) Nova (Sam Alexander)

Sam Alexander is the second person to become Nova, gaining his powers after discovering a Nova helmet on Earth. He first appeared in comics in 2011 with Point One #1, followed by Nova (Vol. 5) #1 in 2013. He received training from Gamora and Rocket Raccoon, and later became an Avenger. Alongside Miles Morales and Kamala Khan, he helped bring a new, younger energy to the team.

Sam has the Nova power, letting him control energy, fly, and gain superhuman strength when he wears a special helmet. While he’s a powerful hero, he’s still very young and hasn’t reached the same level of power as the original Nova, Richard Ryder, who was the last member of the Nova Corps. Besides fighting alongside the Avengers, Sam has also been a member of the Champions team.

5) Ms. Marvel

Kamala Khan became an Avenger alongside Nova and Miles Morales. She first appeared in Marvel Comics in 2013’s Captain Marvel #14 and then starred as Ms. Marvel in 2014’s All-New Marvel NOW! Point One #1. Kamala gained superpowers when the Inhumans released the Terrigen Mists, which activated abilities within her. Later, it was discovered she was both a mutant and an Inhuman, giving her an even wider range of powers.

After the 2015 event called Secret Wars reshaped the universe, a new team of Avengers was assembled. Three teenage heroes decided to join, bringing unique abilities to the group. Kamala can stretch, change shape, and generally alter her body. The other hero can create solid objects and structures out of pure light.

4) Miles Morales

Miles Morales is a standout successor to classic Marvel heroes, ranking among the best new characters of the 21st century. He first appeared in Ultimate Fallout #4, stepping into the role of Spider-Man after Peter Parker’s death in the Ultimate Universe (Earth-1610). As a teenager, Miles quickly established himself as a major hero. His compassion towards Molecule Man ultimately saved his life, allowing him to continue his adventures on the main Marvel Earth (Earth-616).

Miles Morales became an Avenger alongside Kamala Khan and Nova during a new era for Marvel. However, his time with the team was cut short when Carol Danvers began pursuing him just a year later, during the events of Civil War II. In addition to the Avengers, Miles was also part of the Champions team. He may even possess greater power than Peter Parker’s Spider-Man, and uniquely, he can use Venom Blasts and turn invisible.

3) Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes)

Robbie Reyes is a unique Ghost Rider, different from previous versions because he isn’t connected to the demonic entity Mephisto or the traditional Spirit of Vengeance. He first appeared in Marvel’s All-New Ghost Rider #1 in 2014, as part of the ‘All-New, All-Different’ Marvel initiative. Robbie was a young street racer whose car was haunted. After being fatally shot in a drive-by shooting, he was resurrected as the new Ghost Rider, possessed by the spirit of his uncle.

Robbie Reyes, also known as Ghost Rider, teamed up with the Avengers when She-Hulk asked him to help fight the Dark Celestials. Though he doubted himself, he accepted and quickly became a key member of the team. He brings a lot to the fight, including his powerful car, the Hell Charger, the ability to use Hellfire, and even the intimidating Penance Stare from the original Ghost Rider.

2) Hyperion

Hyperion has appeared in many different forms throughout Marvel comics. The first version appeared in 2001, followed by King Hyperion in 2003. The Hyperion who later teamed up with the Avengers was first seen in Avengers (Vol. 5) #1 in 2012. Often seen as Marvel’s version of Superman, Hyperion is an Eternal—a baby sent to Earth from a planet facing destruction—who grew up to become the leader of the Squadron Supreme.

When Hyperion first appeared in Marvel Comics, he was a member of a large Avengers team that included heroes like Cannonball, Sunspot, Shang-Chi, Falcon, and others. This same Hyperion later fought alongside the Avengers during the ‘Time Runs Out’ storyline. Because of his connection to the Eternals, Hyperion possesses powers similar to Superman.

1) Sentry

Hyperion is incredibly powerful, comparable to Superman, but Sentry surpasses even him. Like Jessica Jones, Sentry has been a part of Marvel lore for decades, though he didn’t appear in comics until 2000 with the release of Sentry #1. However, the reason for his late introduction is unique: Sentry intentionally limited his powers and went into hiding to shield the world from his dangerous alter ego, the Void.

The Sentry has been a member of both the New Avengers and Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers teams. He’s incredibly powerful – arguably one of the most powerful characters in all of Marvel Comics. Reed Richards, a leading expert, classifies him as an Omega-Level Threat, and he’s even fought the Hulk to a draw, even during Hulk’s peak strength in World War Hulk. Introduced after the year 2000, the Sentry isn’t just the strongest Avenger to debut recently; he may be the strongest Marvel character, period.
