As a long-time fan, I’ve always known the Avengers as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and they’ve had so many amazing people join their ranks over the years. But it’s really cool how they’ve also included heroes from *beyond* Earth. It’s not just characters like Thor or Hercules – in the comics, those gods have always been tied to our planet. What’s even more interesting is seeing heroes who actually come from other planets, or Earthlings who were taken away and given cosmic powers before coming back to help. It really expands the team’s scope!
I’ve always been fascinated by the Avengers who operate on a cosmic scale, and I’ve put together a list ranking the most powerful ones – from the immortal Eternals to some truly incredible heroes who protect the universe. It’s amazing to see just how strong they are!
7) Mantis
Mantis was among the first cosmic beings to become an Avenger, though she was experiencing mental instability at the time. Originally an Earthling, she was altered and trained by the Kree to fulfill a prophecy – becoming what they called the Celestial Madonna. When she debuted in *Avengers* #112 in 1973, she quickly proved herself a dedicated friend and eventually became a full member of the team.
Everything changed when the Elder Cotati took control of the deceased Swordsman’s body. This led to Mantis becoming pregnant with a powerful, otherworldly child named Sequoia. After giving birth, Mantis left Earth and became a well-known hero throughout the cosmos, even appearing in Silver Surfer comics and later joining the Guardians of the Galaxy to fight against the Phalanx. Mantis has the ability to read minds and can also heal herself from injuries.
6) Noh-Varr
Noh-Varr has gone by several different names throughout his time as a hero, including Marvel Boy, Captain Marvel, and Protector. He was known as Captain Marvel while working with Norman Osborn on the Dark Avengers team. He also fought alongside the Young Avengers as Marvel Boy and had a relationship with Kate Bishop. Beyond that, he was a full member of the main Avengers team, operating under the alias Protector.
This story unfolded during a time of great heroes. The Avengers initially offered a young Kree warrior a path to make amends for previously fighting alongside the Dark Avengers. However, he ended up betraying them, and as punishment, they abandoned him in space. Being Kree, he possesses incredible physical abilities – far beyond human strength, speed, and endurance. He can also fly and survive indefinitely in the vacuum of space. Furthermore, he has complete control over his body, allowing him to ignore pain even when seriously hurt.
5) Sersi
Sersi, one of the Eternals, became an Avenger after teaming up with Captain America and Wasp. She remained with the Avengers for a long time, even sticking with the group when it was mostly new members led by Black Knight. Throughout her time with the team, Sersi proved to be a remarkably strong and capable hero.
Sersi is incredibly durable, essentially immortal and nearly impossible to destroy, except by powers as strong as her own. She’s also super strong and can heal quickly. Beyond that, she’s telepathic, meaning she can read and project thoughts. She can create illusions, move objects with her mind, and blast cosmic energy from her hands or eyes.
4) Moondragon
Heather Douglas, who later becomes known as Moondragon, was born on Earth. When she was young, Thanos killed her parents, but she was spared. Her father was later resurrected as Drax the Destroyer and set on a path to avenge them. Unaware of her father’s fate, Heather was rescued by Thanos’s father, Mentor, and raised on Titan, where she developed incredible psychic abilities.
Moondragon started out as an enemy of the Avengers, but later chose to become a hero and joined their ranks. She’s a powerful telepath, capable of mind control, mental attacks, and even wiping memories – abilities that have earned her the label of a ‘planetary threat’ from the Nova Corps. Remarkably, her mental powers work on even the most powerful cosmic entities, like Galactus. More recently, she’s become a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
3) Gilgamesh
Gilgamesh was the second Eternal to become an Avenger, following Sersi. However, his time with the team didn’t end well. Often called the Forgotten One, he possessed a unique advantage among the Eternals: he was the strongest in terms of raw physical power. He and Hercules were close friends, and Gilgamesh initially joined the Avengers after assisting them in rescuing Franklin Richards from a demonic invasion.
The Avengers were facing a particularly difficult period, made worse by the shocking betrayal of Iron Man, who had secretly been working for Kang for years. Iron Man demonstrated his villainy by causing multiple deaths, including that of Gilgamesh (though he was actually killed by Neut, one of Kang’s agents). Despite this setback, Gilgamesh remains one of the most powerful cosmic beings to serve with the Avengers and was eventually brought back to life.
2) Blue Marvel
Okay, let’s talk power levels. When it comes to cosmic Avengers, the debate between Blue Marvel and Quasar is a fun one, but I’d give the edge to Quasar. That said, Blue Marvel—Dr. Adam Brashear—is a force to be reckoned with. Born right here on Earth, he evolved into something truly extraordinary, and honestly, he’s likely more powerful than almost any other Avenger we’ve seen throughout Marvel history. He’s just on another level.
Blue Marvel generally prefers to work solo, but he’s developed friendships with heroes like Watcher and Namor. He’s also been part of teams before, such as Luke Cage’s Mighty Avengers. His main ability is absorbing anti-matter energy, making him the first person who could generate and control it. He’s practically immortal, doesn’t age, and can only be killed by an extremely powerful being.
1) Quasar
Quasar, also known as Wendell Vaughn, is considered the most powerful cosmic hero among the Avengers. Originally from Earth, he gained incredible abilities through the Quantum Bands and was chosen by Eon to be the new Protector of the Universe. He was an Avengers member during the 1990s, alongside heroes like Sersi. However, he left the team after witnessing Iron Man kill the Supreme Intelligence of the Kree Empire.
In the future, Quasar frequently teamed up with the Avengers and became one of their strongest allies. He used the Quantum Bands to access quantum energy, which allowed him to absorb energy from powerful creatures, fire blasts, teleport, fly, and create protective shields. He’s incredibly powerful, capable of even harming cosmic entities like the Watchers, and his strength rivals that of beings such as Eon and Epoch.
