The upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day seems to be focusing on more down-to-earth villains like gang leaders and mafia bosses, drawing inspiration from the ‘Gang Wars’ comic book storyline. Instead of facing world-ending threats like in the previous two movies, Spider-Man will likely be battling criminals on the streets of the city, which fits his reputation as the ‘Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.’ This raises the question of which specific gang bosses will appear in the film, as the Spider-Man comics offer a wide range of options.
This list highlights the most formidable crime bosses Spider-Man has battled – ranging from ruthless kingpins to complex enemies with tangled histories.
7) The Rose

I’ve always been fascinated by the character of Rose, even though he’s not one of Spider-Man’s most well-known foes. What makes him so compelling is his family history – he’s actually Richard Fisk, the son of the infamous Kingpin! It’s a really tragic story, honestly. He learned all about his father’s criminal empire while still in school, then vanished for years, and everyone just assumed he was gone. But then he reappeared as Rose, determined to take over his father’s criminal organization! It even got so bad that he nearly caused the Kingpin to have a complete breakdown, but thankfully, they eventually reconciled. Though Rose tragically died, his father, in a desperate act, used incredibly powerful artifacts – the Life and Destiny and Death and Entropy Tablets – to bring him back to life. It’s a really complex and emotional story, and I think it adds a lot of depth to the Kingpin’s character as well.
6) The Big Man

Spider-Man’s first comic book villain was Big Man, who debuted in Amazing Spider-Man #10. Initially, he was a masked leader of a criminal group called The Enforcers – made up of Montana, Fancy Dan, and Ox – who acted as his hired muscle. Behind the mask was Frederick Foswell, a reporter for the Daily Bugle who turned to crime. After losing power, Big Man became an informant hoping to replace Wilson Fisk as the Kingpin, but he ultimately worked for Fisk and died protecting J. Jonah Jameson.
5) Hammerhead

Hammerhead is a well-known villain and one of Spider-Man’s recurring enemies. He’s a particularly ruthless crime boss, inspired by the tough gangsters of the 1920s. What sets him apart is his uniquely flattened head – the result of a near-fatal injury repaired with a steel plate. He’s been a key player in numerous gang conflicts, even fighting Doctor Octopus and briefly becoming the new Kingpin while Wilson Fisk served as mayor.
4) Hobgoblin

A particularly memorable Spider-Man story revolved around the mysterious arrival of the Hobgoblin, a villain who initially felt like a new take on the Green Goblin. What made the Hobgoblin so compelling was that his true identity remained a secret, sparking endless fan theories. While the initial reveal of Ned Leeds as the Hobgoblin was ultimately considered a disappointment, it was later changed to a deception orchestrated by a character named Roderick Kingsley. Though the Hobgoblin hasn’t always been well-written in subsequent appearances, he remains a significant and powerful crime boss within the Spider-Man universe, and his recent comeback aims to restore his reputation.
3) Mister Negative

Mister Negative is a compelling villain for several reasons. While the Spider-Man video games recently boosted his popularity, he’s always been a strong character in the comics. Martin Li appears to be a kind and charitable person, but when consumed by the Darkforce, he transforms into a truly ruthless villain. He gained his abilities from the same source as Cloak and Dagger, but unlike them, he embraces the darkness and uses his powers for purely selfish purposes. Adding to his power, he leads a dangerous gang, primarily composed of the Inner Demons, who are completely devoted to serving him.
2) Tombstone

Tombstone is a major threat among Spider-Man’s enemies, known as Alonzo Lincoln. He’s an albino man with a complex past connected to Joe Robertson, a mentor to Spider-Man. An experimental chemical called Diox-3 gave him incredible strength, speed, endurance, and resilience. Beyond his powers, Tombstone is a highly intelligent and manipulative crime boss, considered just as effective a leader as Kingpin. His connections to Spider-Man run deep – his daughter, Janice Lincoln, is the new Beetle, and she’s engaged to Randy Robertson, a close friend of Peter Parker and Joe Robertson’s son.
1) The Kingpin

Though many associate the Kingpin with Daredevil, he first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #50. A well-known Spider-Man cover depicts him discarding his costume and giving up, a direct result of the relentless torment inflicted by Wilson Fisk, who often operates beyond the reach of the law. Fisk consistently targets Spider-Man, aiming to harm him and damage his reputation. He’s one of the few villains – and certainly the most powerful crime boss – that Spider-Man has never truly defeated for good.
