7 Most Powerful Sorcerer Supremes Ranked

In Marvel Comics, the Sorcerer Supreme is the most skilled master of magic in their dimension – surpassing all others. While Doctor Strange is the most famous holder of this title, many others have earned it on Earth-616. The Sorcerer Supreme is meant to safeguard the world’s magic, but this hasn’t always happened. For example, Doctor Doom once became the Sorcerer Supreme and used the power to try and conquer the world. Essentially, the only true requirement for the title is being the most powerful magic user in the dimension; if someone stronger appears, the title automatically passes to them.

Starting with the original Sorcerer Supreme in this reality and continuing through figures like Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom, here’s a look at the most powerful mystics who have ever held the title.

7) Loki

Loki unexpectedly became the Sorcerer Supreme through deception. Although he didn’t actually compete in or win the tournament, Vishanti granted him the title. They reasoned that a human couldn’t effectively handle the role, especially with a major threat approaching Earth, and Loki’s Asgardian nature made him a suitable candidate. This allowed him to take on the responsibilities of the Sorcerer Supreme.

The Vishanti believed Loki desired redemption and wanted to make amends for his previous actions, considering him a more suitable candidate than Doctor Strange, who hadn’t been meeting their expectations. Ultimately, Loki played a crucial role in overcoming the Void – the very threat the Vishanti had foreseen – before passing the responsibility on to Doctor Strange.

6) Doctor Voodoo

After Doctor Strange was unable to continue his work as the Sorcerer Supreme, he needed to find a successor, and that person became Doctor Voodoo. The Eye of Agamotto revealed a list of around 35 potential replacements to Strange and the New Avengers, ultimately selecting Jericho Drumm. Having collaborated with Strange previously, the Haitian Houngan Supreme accepted the Eye as a sign of his elevated position and began effectively fulfilling the role.

As a longtime cinema devotee, I always found it fascinating how things played out with Voodoo and Doctor Strange. Apparently, Agamotto, due to not fully understanding the situation or Voodoo’s capabilities, showed up and tried to remove him from his position. It was a really selfless act, but Voodoo actually gave his life to stop Agamotto and allow Doctor Strange to reclaim his role. Thankfully, Voodoo wasn’t gone for good! He eventually came back to life and, incredibly, even took charge of the Strange Academy, dedicating himself to training the next wave of mystic arts users. It’s a compelling arc, honestly.

5) Magik

Illyana Rasputina, known as Magik, began as a young character in the X-Men comics. She was sent to the dimension of Limbo, where she spent what felt like years – though only a short time passed on Earth. When she returned, she was much older and possessed formidable magical abilities, gained during her time in Limbo. Now a powerful mutant with mastery of mystic arts, she became a key member of the New Mutants team and rose to become a major star in the Marvel Universe.

Illyana Rasputina, known as Magik, mastered the mystic arts to such a degree that she became the Sorcerer Supreme of Limbo, a dimension existing separately from others. Since then, she has collaborated with Doctor Strange when his help is required, recognizing that having two Sorcerer Supremes is more effective.

4) The Ancient One

For hundreds of years, the Ancient One intermittently held the title of Sorcerer Supreme. Yao is the Ancient One, and he first became Sorcerer Supreme in the 1450s. The previous Ancient Ones gave him the Amulet of Agomotto, acknowledging that his magical abilities were greater than all of theirs combined. Following this, he journeyed around the world, gathering as many mystical artifacts as he could find.

He experienced numerous adventures, most notably overcoming the demon Xorak the Outcast and imprisoning him within the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak. In 1666, he banished Dormammu and protected Earth from his power. Ultimately, he discovered Doctor Strange as his successor and entrusted him with the mantle.

3) Agamotto

For a long time, Marvel Comics readers associated the name Agamotto with Doctor Strange’s Eye of Agamotto. But, as shown in the 1,000,000 BC comics, Agamotto was the son of Oshtur, one of Earth’s Elder Gods, and was essentially the very first Sorcerer Supreme. He even joined the 1MM Avengers team.

As a huge fan of the mystic arts in the Marvel universe, I’ve always been fascinated by Agamotto. He’s seriously powerful – known as Agamotto the All-Seeing, and being the child of an Elder God just adds to it! He’s one of the few beings strong enough to go toe-to-toe with threats like Dormammu and even Galactus. What’s really cool is that he’s part of the Vishanti – a trio of mystical entities, alongside Oshtur and Hoary Hoggoth. And get this – Agamotto actually showed up in Doctor Strange’s timeline to challenge him, believing he wasn’t worthy! It took a huge sacrifice – Doctor Voodoo giving his own life – to stop him. It’s a pretty intense backstory, and it really highlights just how formidable Agamotto is. You can find more about the Vishanti here.

2) Doctor Doom

Doctor Doom has unexpectedly become the new Sorcerer Supreme, a situation Doctor Strange largely brought upon himself. Strange willingly taught Doom advanced magical techniques, and Doom was already skilled in the mystic arts. He did this hoping to help Doom save his mother’s soul from Mephisto, and they were ultimately successful in their endeavor.

With that, Doctor Doom grew even more powerful, seized control of Strange Academy-rebranding it as Doom Academy-and then declared he wouldn’t give the school back to Doctor Strange until he had eliminated every danger facing the world, effectively forever. As One World Under Doom demonstrated, his power surpasses nearly all others; he’s established himself as the planet’s dictator, and he leverages his position as Sorcerer Supreme to maintain dominance over all of Earth’s heroes.

1) Doctor Strange

Although Doctor Doom deceived Doctor Strange and took the title of Sorcerer Supreme, and even found a way to keep it, Strange is actually the more powerful magic user *when* he holds the title. The key difference is that Strange uses his powers for good, dedicating himself to saving the world – something he’s done repeatedly.

Doctor Strange has been the Sorcerer Supreme for a longer period than any other character in Marvel Comics history. However, when looking at the entire history of the title, his time is actually quite short compared to earlier Sorcerers Supreme like Agamotto and the Ancient One. Even so, Strange is more powerful than the Ancient One and has even defeated Doom at the height of his abilities. Considering all of this, he stands out as the most powerful Sorcerer Supreme Marvel has ever seen.
