7 Most Powerful Superheroes The Hulk Has Defeated

The Hulk is easily one of the most powerful heroes in comic books, capable of incredible destruction thanks to his limitless anger. But this rage often causes him to act as a villain, leading to many situations where he loses control and other Marvel heroes have to intervene. Some of the most famous battles in Marvel history involve heroes fighting the Hulk when he goes into a destructive frenzy. Despite their best efforts, these heroes often can’t match his immense strength.

While the Hulk is often a hero, stories like World War Hulk and Immortal Hulk show him battling other superheroes. Here’s a look at the heroes he’s defeated, solidifying his reputation as Marvel’s strongest physical powerhouse.

7) Gladiator

Gladiator, the commander of the Shi’ar Imperial Guard, is one of Marvel’s most powerful characters with abilities similar to Superman. He’s unique because his strength increases with his confidence – a trait that’s often overshadowed by the Hulk’s sheer rage. In a 1997 story from Incredible Hulk Annual, the Shi’ar mistook the Hulk for a galactic criminal and sent Gladiator to stop him. Their fight took them from outer space back to Earth. Gladiator even tried using his heat vision to injure the Hulk, blasting a hole in his chest. However, the Hulk wasn’t affected and retaliated by grabbing Gladiator’s face, reflecting the heat vision back at him. Ultimately, the Hulk threw Gladiator into a nuclear reactor, causing a massive explosion.

6) X-Men

Professor X founded the X-Men, a team known for its powerful heroes. However, his past involvement with the Illuminati – a group that banished the Hulk – put the X-Men in a difficult position during the World War Hulk storyline. When the Hulk returned to Earth seeking revenge on the Illuminati, he eventually targeted the X-Mansion. Despite a strong defense led by Cyclops and Wolverine, including heroes like Colossus and Emma Frost, the Hulk’s destructive force was overwhelming. Even the incredibly powerful Juggernaut was defeated. Ultimately, the Hulk decided to spare Professor X, realizing the suffering he had already endured due to the devastating event known as M-Day and allowed him to go free.

5) Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange, the master of magic in Marvel Comics, has the power to alter reality itself. But even with such incredible abilities, he became a target of the Hulk’s rage during the World War Hulk storyline. To try and stop the Hulk, Doctor Strange entered his mind, hoping to reason with Bruce Banner, the scientist within. It seemed to work at first, but it was a trick. Banner quickly transformed back into the Hulk and brutally injured Doctor Strange’s hands. These injuries weren’t just mental; they physically weakened Strange’s magical powers. Despite even gaining power from a demon, Doctor Strange was ultimately defeated and severely beaten by the Hulk.

4) Hercules

Hercules, known as the strongest of the Greek gods, is a powerful being who has fought gods, monsters, and even supported the weight of the universe. During the World War Hulk storyline, Hercules and other heroes attempted to help the Hulk understand what made them angry. However, the Hulk misinterpreted their arrival as a hostile attack and immediately began fighting them. Hercules was forced to defend himself, unleashing his incredible strength in a battle against the Hulk. Although he managed to hit the Hulk with some powerful blows, Hercules was ultimately defeated and left injured. It wasn’t until after his defeat that Hercules was able to convince the Hulk he was there to help.

3) Sentry

The climax of the World War Hulk storyline sees Earth’s heroes, facing a desperate situation against the Hulk’s destructive path, resort to their ultimate weapon: the Sentry. The Sentry gained incredible powers – comparable to Superman, plus the ability to control matter at a molecular level – after taking an experimental version of the Super Soldier Serum. Able to warp reality itself, the Sentry was the only one who could stand against the Hulk’s overwhelming power. Their fight caused massive destruction, and ultimately, both were drained of their abilities. In a surprising turn of events, Bruce Banner (the Hulk’s human form) delivered the final blow, knocking out the powerless Bob Reynolds (the Sentry’s human form) and winning the battle.

2) Thor

The Hulk and Thor are known for their long-standing rivalry in Marvel Comics, fueled by their shared warrior spirit and eagerness to fight. Thor is incredibly powerful, capable of destroying planets and defeating even gods. They’ve clashed many times, often ending in a stalemate, but the Hulk has occasionally won decisively. One memorable victory, in Hulk: Let the Battle Begin, saw the Hulk comically defeat Thor by using Thor’s own hammer to knock him out. More recently, in Immortal Hulk, the Hulk nearly killed Thor, severely injuring his skull and almost suffocating him.

1) Avengers

In the Immortal Hulk comic series, a particularly vicious version of the Hulk, known as the Devil Hulk, emerges and clashes with the Avengers. Despite their best efforts, the Avengers are unable to defeat him. Not even the combined strength of heroes like Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Captain Marvel, She-Hulk, Blade, and Black Panther could subdue the Hulk. They repeatedly attacked, stabbed, and even removed his limbs, but his incredible strength and healing factor proved overwhelming. Ultimately, the Avengers failed to capture the Hulk, and he was safely teleported away by his allies, Gamma Flight.
