Wolverine is renowned as the best at his dangerous skillset, a fact many superheroes have unfortunately experienced. While he’s a Marvel Comics icon, his short temper and refusal to back down often cause conflict with teammates and other heroes. From his debut in 1974, Wolverine has consistently faced opponents with greater strength and power. Despite not being the strongest hero physically, he compensates with an amazing ability to heal, virtually unbreakable adamantium claws, extensive combat experience gained over centuries, and a fierce, uncontrollable rage – all of which have allowed him to overcome even the most powerful superheroes.

Wolverine is a ruthless fighter known for prioritizing victory, even if it means sacrificing his own morality. Here’s a look at some of the heroes he’s defeated, either through direct combat or by being manipulated into fighting.

7) Northstar

Northstar, a member of the Canadian superhero team Alpha Flight, is incredibly fast and powerful, able to fly at almost the speed of light and shoot energy beams. However, even his speed wasn’t enough when Wolverine was mind-controlled by Hydra and the Hand. In Wolverine #25, the brainwashed X-Man was sent to eliminate his former teammates. Wolverine attacked Shadowcat, his former student, but she used her ability to become intangible to avoid his claws. Sadly, Wolverine simply passed through her, and accidentally impaled Northstar on a tree, resulting in his death.

6) Deadpool

Deadpool and Wolverine are constant enemies, always trying to kill each other, but their incredible healing abilities keep bringing them back for more. When Deadpool feels down in Deadpool #27, he decides the best way to cheer himself up is to provoke a fight with Wolverine. After hitting Shadowcat, he finally gets his wish – Wolverine attacks, determined to destroy him. As with all their fights, it’s a long, violent battle that takes them through the city, with both relentlessly stabbing at each other. Ultimately, Wolverine gains the upper hand, impaling Deadpool from behind with his claws, lifting him into the air, and letting out a victorious roar. At least Deadpool’s emotional state improved!

5) Spider-Man

Spider-Man and Wolverine, two of Marvel’s most famous heroes, have clashed in battle on multiple occasions. In a recent comic, Spider-Man Annual #1 (2023), Agatha Harkness magically transported them to the secret city of El Dorado. There, they discovered a powerful orb that caused them to fight each other, both wanting to possess it. Spider-Man’s strength, speed, and webs gave him an early lead. However, Wolverine had learned from their past encounters. He managed to break through Spider-Man’s webs, capture him, and throw him around. Ultimately, Wolverine won by inflicting minor cuts to Spider-Man’s chest, allowing him to take the orb and give it to Agatha Harkness.

4) Colossus

Colossus is known as one of the strongest members of the X-Men. In an alternate storyline from Wolverine: Revenge, he betrayed the X-Men and joined the villainous Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. This group unleashed an electromagnetic pulse that disabled all machines across North America. When Wolverine was sent with Captain America and the Winter Soldier to fix the power outage, he saw the Brotherhood murder his allies. Years later, Wolverine hunted down every member of the Brotherhood, saving Colossus for last. Although Colossus was incredibly strong and managed to seriously injure Wolverine – even tearing off his arm – his metallic body couldn’t withstand Wolverine’s adamantium claws. Ultimately, Wolverine killed Colossus by stabbing him in the head.

3) X-Men

The X-Men are essentially a team of incredibly powerful mutants. But in the alternate reality of Old Man Logan, Wolverine is tricked into killing the people he loves most. When Earth’s villains team up to destroy superheroes, Mysterio uses illusions to make Wolverine believe he’s single-handedly slaughtering his X-Men teammates and students. When Wolverine realizes what’s happened, he discovers he’s murdered many of the team’s strongest members, including Cyclops, Storm, Jean Grey, Polaris, Beast, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Havok, Iceman, and Jubilee. Though killing so many heroes is an astonishing act, the event devastates Wolverine, leaving him filled with guilt and shame for betraying and murdering his friends.

2) Lobo

In a surprising turn of events, Wolverine defeated Lobo – a character known for battling Superman and other powerful beings. This fight, which took place in a bar in DC vs Marvel #3, was a brutal clash between two incredibly resilient and savage anti-heroes, both capable of healing from almost any injury. Ultimately, the readers decided the winner, and Wolverine came out on top, likely due to his greater popularity. The writers seemingly didn’t know how Wolverine could legitimately win against someone as strong and nearly indestructible as Lobo, so the deciding moments weren’t actually shown. Instead, the story simply shows Wolverine calmly walking away, casually smoking Lobo’s cigar.

1) Hulk

Wolverine’s very first fight was against the Incredible Hulk! Though he initially lost due to the Hulk’s immense power and healing ability, the two have become long-time rivals, with Wolverine actually winning several times over the years. His most decisive victory happened in Savage Wolverine #5. While exploring the Savage Land and investigating an alien danger, Wolverine ran into the Hulk, and a fight immediately broke out. When a huge gorilla attacked the Hulk, Wolverine seized the opportunity and leaped onto his back. He then brutally stabbed his claws into the Hulk’s brain, knocking him unconscious. Luckily, the Hulk recovered and even teamed up with Wolverine to battle the alien threat.
