7 Most Powerful Versions of Spider-Man Villains, Ranked

Spider-Man is Marvel’s biggest star, and his villains are just as famous. Characters like Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Carnage are instantly recognizable as comic book baddies. Most of Spider-Man’s enemies are relatively small-scale criminals, focused on street-level crimes rather than world-ending threats. However, like many supervillains, they’re always striving for more power, hoping to finally defeat Spider-Man. While usually limited in scope, some versions of these villains – across different universes – have become incredibly powerful, posing a threat not just to Spider-Man, but to the entire universe.

It’s truly frightening to watch Marvel’s most deranged villains escalate into dangers that threaten the entire world, and even multiple universes.

7) Regent

On Earth-18119, a ruthless dictator named Regent rules with an iron fist. He eliminated the Avengers and New Warriors to prevent any opposition to his power. Regent uses a special suit that allows him to steal the superpowers of those he imprisons in a place called the Cellar. He’s stolen abilities from heroes like Cyclops, Storm, Professor X, Nightcrawler, Iceman, Justice, and Colossus. This world’s Spider-Man and his family were among the few brave enough to fight against Regent’s oppressive rule, though it was a difficult fight, considering Regent is strong enough to easily tear off the Hulk’s hand.

6) The Battery

Electro has long been one of Spider-Man’s most dangerous foes. However, an Electro from another universe—Earth-1082—became a massive threat to Spider-People throughout the multiverse. This version, Mike Dillon, teamed up with another of himself to chart the multiversal Web of Life and Destiny. He then built an army of Electros, calling it the Electro-Verse. Using advanced Kree technology similar to that which created the Supreme Intelligence, Mike transformed himself into the Battery—a huge, incredibly powerful being made of pure electrical energy. The Battery also started taking over the minds and powers of thousands of other Electros. Powered by his Electro-Verse army, the Battery posed a serious danger to the multiversal Web-Warriors.

5) Ghost Goblin

The Multiversal Masters of Evil are a supremely powerful group of villains in Marvel Comics, bringing together the most dangerous foes from different realities. One member is the Ghost Goblin from Earth-45863, a twisted version of the Green Goblin who made a deal with the devil (Mephisto) and became possessed by a vengeful spirit. After joining the team, Ghost Goblin started taking over worlds, but with a horrifying twist: he uses ‘Noggin Bombs’ – the flaming heads of Ghost Riders he’s killed throughout the multiverse – instead of regular Pumpkin Bombs. Combining the powers of a Ghost Rider – like immortality, incredible strength, Hellfire, and the Penance Stare – with his already formidable abilities, Ghost Goblin is a truly terrifying and powerful enemy.

4) Spot

Often, the villain Spot is seen as a comical and weak enemy for Spider-Man. But in the animated movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, he’s portrayed as a truly dangerous threat to the entire multiverse. By constantly exposing himself to a special dark matter from different universes, Spot gains the ability to easily travel between worlds and create incredibly powerful portals. The film even shows glimpses of a future where Spot destroys cities by pulling buildings and cars from the sky. If he isn’t stopped, his actions could unravel the very structure of the multiverse.

3) King in Black Carnage

Carnage, one of Marvel’s most frightening villains, once became a god. He achieved this by absorbing alternate versions of himself and Venom from different universes, along with the powers of heroes like Ant-Man, Electro, and the Silver Surfer. He also gained incredible power by absorbing a mystical metal called Uru and merging with dwarves to create a weapon called the Necrospear, becoming the new ‘God Butcher.’ With these cosmic and mystical abilities, Carnage easily defeated powerful, symbiote-enhanced Celestials and even stole power from Knull, the original god of symbiotes. This made him an incredibly dangerous, god-like serial killer who threatened the entire multiverse.

2) Goblin King

The Infinity Gauntlet is an incredibly powerful weapon, giving whoever wields it control over everything in the universe – space, time, reality, thoughts, and even souls. In one reality, Norman Osborn got his hands on the Gauntlet and used it to defeat the Avengers and remake the world to match his dark vision. He even forced Spider-Man to endlessly relive the tragic death of Gwen Stacy. No one, not even Thanos, could beat the Goblin King when he had the Gauntlet. Ultimately, the Goblin King destroyed himself by, in a fit of insanity, killing his younger father, which erased him from existence. Despite his eventual downfall, the Goblin King was essentially all-powerful and eliminated anyone who could have opposed him.

1) Master of Meta Mysterio

The most dangerous version of Spider-Man’s foe, Mysterio, appears in the educational comic series How to Read Comics the Marvel Way. In this story, Mysterio finds a supremely powerful comic book that lets him control everything – even the fact that it is a comic book. With this power, he can change anyone’s destiny, stop time, become enormous, make objects come alive, and repeatedly defeat Spider-Man. He almost destroys comics altogether! Mysterio only loses his god-like abilities because the readers themselves decided he should. Very few Marvel villains have ever gained this much control over not just reality, but the very nature of the comic book medium itself.
