7 Most Powerful Versions of Superboy, Ranked

Superman is famous for being the strongest superhero, and he’s often referred to as the Last Son of Krypton because he was the only survivor of his home planet. But he wasn’t the only Kryptonian hero! Before becoming Superman, he was known as Superboy, learning how to be a hero and saving people. After he outgrew that name, others inspired by him took on the role of Superboy, continuing to fight for what’s right. This raises an interesting question: who was the original Boy of Steel?

It’s fun to compare different heroes who’ve taken on the name Superboy and imagine how they’d fare against each other. Today, we’re ranking the seven most powerful individuals who’ve been called Superboy, based on their abilities and strength. Despite the name, each of these heroes is incredibly powerful, so let’s dive right into the rankings!

7) Jon Lane Kent

In a potential future after a great disaster, Jon Lane Kent was the son of Superman and Lois Lane. While he gained a lot of his father’s strength, he wasn’t destined to be as powerful. Instead of typical Kryptonian powers, Jon developed incredibly strong telekinesis – the ability to move things with his mind. This allowed him to do many of the same things as Superman, like creating force fields to protect himself, flying, and blasting energy. However, Jon’s mixed human and Kryptonian genetics were unstable, causing painful spasms and significantly weakening him, preventing him from reaching his full potential.

6) Prime Clark

For years, Clark Kent’s time as Superboy was a largely unknown part of his backstory, and wasn’t officially recognized as part of his origin. However, with Action Comics #1087, his early years as the Boy of Steel are now detailed. While incredibly strong even then, some of his powers, like heat vision, hadn’t fully developed, and his existing abilities weren’t as powerful as they would become. That doesn’t mean young Clark was weak – Superboy could likely challenge many seasoned heroes even without training. But, the others on this list simply have more fully developed powers.

5) Chris Kent

Chris Kent has a surprising lineage – he’s the biological son of General Zod, Superman’s famous enemy. He was born in the Phantom Zone and later raised by Superman and Lois Lane. As a pure Kryptonian, Chris had the potential to be as powerful as Superman or Supergirl, and this potential grew quickly due to a strange condition that rapidly accelerated his development and powers. Though he later became the host for a powerful Kryptonian god named Nightwing, we’re focusing on his time before that happened. Even without Nightwing, Chris’s Kryptonian heritage makes him incredibly strong, and if he inherited any of his father’s traits, he’s destined to be a formidable hero.

4) Conner Kent

Conner Kent, a genetic clone of Superman and Lex Luthor, possesses a remarkable range of powers inherited from his Kryptonian side. While his Kryptonian abilities didn’t fully manifest at first, they eventually grew to be on par with those of other members of the Superman family. Before developing solar-based powers, Conner fought using tactile telekinesis – the ability to control objects with his mind simply by touching them. This allowed him to replicate Superman-like feats, such as lifting heavy objects and creating a protective force field. He could also release powerful blasts of psychic energy, equivalent to roughly five thousand pounds of TNT. When Conner combines his telekinesis and Kryptonian powers, he becomes incredibly strong, and he’s the most powerful psychic within the entire Superman family.

3) Jon Kent

Jon Kent, the son of Superman and Lois Lane, inherited all of his father’s abilities, and eventually surpassed them. As a child, his powers were tied to his feelings, but as he matured, they became incredibly stable and arguably stronger than Superman’s. Even Batman recognized Jon’s unique Kryptonian-human heritage meant he had the potential to be the most powerful being of his kind, a claim Jon proved true by demonstrating abilities—like seeing and emitting heat vision at frequencies beyond Superman’s range—as seen in the “Golden Age” storyline. Ultimately, Jon took on the mantle of Superman, showcasing just how exceptionally powerful he became at a young age.

2) Pre-Crisis Clark

It might be surprising to see Clark Kent appear twice on this list, but the Superboy from before and after the ‘Crisis’ event felt like distinct characters to me. The earlier version, from the Golden and Silver Ages of comics, was vastly more powerful than anyone who later used the Superboy name. This Superboy was as strong as Superman used to be, and he could bend reality whenever he pleased. He routinely traveled through time, effortlessly deflected massive meteors, and even moved an entire galaxy’s worth of planets with no strain. Honestly, he could do anything, and you could argue he deserves the number one spot – except for one other character who might be even stronger.

1) Superboy-Prime

Considered the most powerful version of Superboy, this character perfectly blends the classic, over-the-top power levels of older comics with modern storytelling. He’s incredibly strong and isn’t afraid to show it, constantly exceeding expectations of what he should be capable of. He’s withstood attacks from incredibly powerful beings like Black Adam as if they were nothing, fought the entire Green Lantern Corps, even damaged the Anti-Monitor, and once punched reality so hard it altered the timeline! While reality was already fragile at the time, the comic itself acknowledged his strength was unbelievable. Thankfully, Superboy-Prime is now a hero again, because he’s easily one of the strongest beings in the DC Universe.
