In literature, fantasy has consistently ranked among the top genres due to its expansive range of narrative possibilities. These tales, rich in imagination and wonder, can be found across various platforms, with television being one such medium. Numerous successful fantasy series have graced our television screens throughout the years, some even achieving immense popularity. However, not all these productions have managed to attain the same level of success as their more celebrated counterparts. It’s unfortunate that some outstanding fantasy stories do not always receive the recognition they deserve when transformed for TV viewers.
For every popular fantasy series like “Game of Thrones”, there are numerous others that slip into obscurity. It’s unfortunate because these shows often deserve recognition and praise from viewers. Sometimes, their lack of initial success leads to early cancellation. Since the fantasy genre encompasses a variety of stories, it’s likely that there’s a series out there for everyone – you just might need to rediscover some underrated gems!
7) Shadow and Bone (Netflix, 2021-2023)
As a dedicated fan of fantastical stories, I can’t help but sing the praises of “Shadow and Bone.” Though it has become infamous for being another casualty of Netflix’s ruthless TV show cancellation policy, this dark fantasy series truly stands on its own merits. Adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s novel of the same name, the show is set in the captivating world of the Grishaverse, where our protagonist, Alina Starkov – an orphan with a mysterious past – uncovers her magical powers that might just be the world’s salvation. “Shadow and Bone” spanned two enchanting seasons before it was sadly axed, leaving us yearning for more. Yet, even with its premature conclusion, it remains a must-watch for any fantasy enthusiast seeking a mesmerizing escape.
6) Once Upon a Time (ABC, 2011-2018)
Initially, “Once Upon a Time” received some acclaim when it first aired, but its audience gradually decreased as the series progressed. The narrative shifts between the fictional town of Storybrooke in Maine and a fantasy realm inhabited by various fairy tale characters. Despite boasting an impressive cast and a distinct concept, “Once Upon a Time” is frequently underappreciated, even years after it concluded in 2018.
5) Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Disney+, 2023-Present)
In numerous fantasy TV productions, Walker Scobell’s portrayal of Percy Jackson is frequently highlighted as exceptional. Starring as the titular character in Disney+’s series “Percy Jackson and the Olympians“, Scobell captivates audiences with his depiction of the demigod teen, a role that closely follows Rick Riordan’s books. The adaptation is commendable, and though it has already achieved early success, this series truly merits greater recognition.
4) The Shannara Chronicles (MTV, 2016 & Spike, 2017)
Back in 2016, I discovered the thrilling TV series, “The Shannara Chronicles,” which brilliantly adapts Terry Brooks’ epic Sword of Shannara trilogy. As a devoted fan, I can tell you that this show, featuring a talented Austin Butler, takes viewers on an exciting journey with three heroic characters who work tirelessly to safeguard an ancient tree to keep malevolent demons from returning.
Unfortunately, the series only lasted for two seasons before it was unfortunately cancelled in 2017. Despite its premature ending, “The Shannara Chronicles” is a hidden gem that deserves another viewing. Its masterful blending of classic fantasy elements makes it an accessible and enjoyable addition to the genre. Even though it didn’t enjoy as much recognition as it deserved during its run, I believe that more people should give this show the attention it truly warrants.
3) Merlin (BBC, 2008-2012)
As a devoted cinephile, let me share my appreciation for an underappreciated gem in the realm of fantasy series – the BBC’s Merlin, which first graced our screens in 2008. Spanning five captivating seasons and 65 episodes, it concluded its run in 2012, yet its allure remains undiminished. This intriguing reinterpretation of the Arthurian legends places Colin Morgan’s charismatic portrayal of young warlock Merlin at the forefront as he embarks on thrilling adventures alongside the future King of England. The show’s unique take on these well-known tales offers a rich tapestry for compelling and remarkable fantasy television, making Merlin a series that truly deserves a second look even after its conclusion over a decade ago.
2) Grimm (NBC, 2011-2017)
Rather than delving into the magical realms common in other series, the show “Grimm” introduces fantastical elements directly into our everyday world, creating an intriguing blend of genres. The story revolves around a homicide detective in Portland who unexpectedly learns he is a ‘Grimm’, a protector of mankind against mythological beings known as Wesen. Although “Grimm” garnered much attention during its original broadcast, it has since faded into obscurity. However, for those who enjoy police dramas with an unusual twist, revisiting this series is highly recommended.
1) The Magicians (Syfy, 2015-2020)
In simpler terms, “The Magicians” stands out among forgotten fantasy television series due to its inventiveness. Based on Lev Grossman’s book trilogy, the show narrates the journey of Quentin Coldwater, a young man who gets accepted into a magical university named Brakebills. The series draws inspiration from popular franchises like “Harry Potter” and the “Narnia” series, while incorporating concepts from quantum theory with a magical twist. What sets it apart is its unique blend of fantasy and human drama, a combination seldom seen in other shows. Regrettably, this groundbreaking fantasy TV series has been undervalued.
