Movies don’t always find their audience right away. When Jennifer’s Body was released in 2009, marketing made it seem like a typical horror film featuring Megan Fox, who was popular from the Transformers movies. However, the actual film was much more than that – it offered a sharp critique of how powerful men exploit women. Because it didn’t deliver what audiences expected, critics and viewers initially reacted negatively. Over time, though, Jennifer’s Body has gained a following as more people recognize its powerful feminist themes.
It’s not unusual for movies to become beloved ‘cult classics’ years after their initial release. Often, films that didn’t do well at first find an audience through streaming or simply by people recommending them to others. Here are seven movies from 2025 that we predict will eventually reach that status.
7) Regretting You

Colleen Hoover has recently faced negative attention, starting with problems during the production of the movie It Ends With Us. Things didn’t improve with her second film adaptation, Regretting You, which received poor reviews despite earning $90 million at the box office. Ultimately, the film was widely criticized.
The most notable thing about the movie Regretting You is how over-the-top its story is. It centers on Clara, a teenager dealing with the loss of her father and aunt, and mostly follows her emotional journey and romantic interests. But things get really strange as her mother and uncle start developing feelings for each other.
6) Five Nights at Freddy’s 2

The fans of Five Nights at Freddy’s are incredibly passionate. Because the games are so popular worldwide, they’re eager to see a successful live-action adaptation. While Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 delivers in some ways, it doesn’t quite work as a well-structured movie.
The second installment doesn’t offer much that’s fresh, which makes it feel slow at times. However, the practical effects are truly impressive—the animatronics look amazing and create some genuinely scary scenes. These effects might be enough to improve how people view Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 over time.
5) Playdate

Humor is really a matter of personal taste – what one person finds funny, another might not. Unfortunately, the movie Playdate, with Kevin James and Alan Ritchson, didn’t land well with most viewers when it came out on Prime Video, and received more negative reactions than laughs.
Even though James is still causing trouble in Playdate, Joe Ritchson is the reason the movie is so enjoyable. He fully commits to the silliness of the story – two dads versus a team of mercenaries – and gives a fantastic performance. As Ritchson becomes more famous, people’s opinions of Playdate might evolve over time.
4) War of the Worlds

Prime Video released another disappointing film this year called War of the Worlds. It stars Ice Cube as a Homeland Security officer forced to watch an alien invasion unfold from his computer. Viewers quickly criticized the movie for its low production quality and uninspired acting.
Despite often appearing on “worst movies ever” lists, War of the Worlds might eventually be appreciated for its unintentional humor. It’s filled with moments so bizarre – like Ice Cube’s character casually reacting to his son’s death – that they’re strangely memorable and entertaining.
3) Happy Gilmore 2

Adam Sandler consistently follows his own creative path. Despite often receiving negative reviews, he continues to make movies. However, even the nostalgia factor wasn’t enough to help Happy Gilmore 2 succeed – it received a similar reception to some of his other less popular films, like Hubie Halloween.
I really wanted to love Happy Gilmore 2, but honestly, it felt like it spent more time bringing in Adam Sandler’s buddies for quick appearances than actually focusing on a good plot. It wasn’t all bad though – there were definitely some hilarious moments that I think will still be funny years from now.
2) Screamboat

It’s become common for independent filmmakers to reimagine classic, public domain characters in darker ways, and the 2025 horror film Screamboat is a prime example. Director Steven LaMorte took the family-friendly Steamboat Willie and turned him into a villain. While reviews were mixed, the film didn’t perform well commercially, earning just over $800,000 in ticket sales.
As Disney fans who grew up with classic characters get older, they’re starting to enjoy seeing those characters in more adult-themed stories like Screamboat, which is full of entertaining action. A follow-up movie is already being planned, potentially leading to a great double feature in the future.
1) Love Hurts

Ke Huy Quan, famous for his role as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, is enjoying a remarkable comeback, with an Oscar win and leading roles in major Disney films. However, Love Hurts, the movie that recently brought him back into the spotlight, wasn’t a success. It didn’t receive positive reviews and performed poorly in theaters.
The biggest weakness of Love Hurts is its confusing story – it doesn’t fully commit to being either a lighthearted romantic comedy or a thrilling action movie. However, the action sequences are well-done and showcase Ke Huy Quan’s impressive skills. While the film doesn’t offer any deep insights, it’s ultimately more enjoyable than you might expect.
