HBO Max has a huge collection of movies and shows, many originally from Warner Bros. A lot of these are films you can enjoy just by watching once – like *A Minecraft Movie*, *Bad Santa*, or *Beetlejuice Beetlejuice* – because they’re fun to re-experience rather than needing to be carefully analyzed. But what about movies with complicated stories? Those are the ones where you might notice new details or appreciate jokes and scares more on a second viewing.
These are the kinds of movies that have a lot going on, but are so enjoyable or captivating that they’re perfect for repeat viewings. You might even appreciate them more the second time around.
7) The Suicide Squad

As a movie fan, I think *The Suicide Squad* is seriously one of the most important DC films ever. It basically unofficially kicked off what we’re now seeing as the DCU. They’re building on its story now, even if it’s in a slightly different timeline, and even though it didn’t make a ton of money at the box office, Warner Bros. still trusted James Gunn enough to put him in charge of everything superhero-related. That’s a huge deal!
This movie can feel a bit much the first time you watch it. It opens with an action-packed battle on the beach, bringing back some familiar faces from *Suicide Squad*. We quickly meet the new characters, and through Harley Quinn’s own storyline, these two groups eventually come together. It’s a densely packed film, and you’ll likely enjoy it more after seeing it a second time.
6) The Big Lebowski

It’s difficult to think of a comedy movie that tries to do as much as the Coen brothers’ *The Big Lebowski*. It’s become a defining cult classic, and it’s fascinating how fans connect with different parts of the film.
The first time you watch the movie, you’re immediately captivated by Jeff Bridges’ memorable performance as the Dude. But the story doesn’t stop there – it’s full of surprising twists and a few surreal dreamlike moments. After watching it again, everything starts to come together and make more sense.
5) Blood Simple

Speaking of the Coen brothers, their first film, *Blood Simple*, gets even better when you watch it again. Actually, that’s true for most of their movies – whether they’re comedies or suspenseful crime thrillers like this one.
This movie keeps you guessing – at first, it’s hard to know who the good guys are. Every character has flaws, but it quickly becomes clear that some are much more dangerous than others. A second viewing lets you fully appreciate the surprising twists and betrayals as the story unfolds.
4) Superman

James Gunn’s *Superman* is a great start to the new DC Universe! It’s a fun, fast-paced movie with strong acting and some enjoyable surprise appearances. Its unique storytelling, which jumps right into the action, helps it stand out from other superhero films.
Watching the film a second time allows viewers to fully understand Lex Luthor’s intricate plan. It’s a worthwhile re-watch, especially since *Superman* actually improves with subsequent viewings.
3) No Sudden Move

Many gangster films are quite long, but Steven Soderbergh’s *No Sudden Move* has a particularly complex plot. It begins as a typical gangster story, then shifts into a chase, and eventually transforms into a story about getting revenge.
This movie really shines thanks to the incredible performances by Don Cheadle and Benicio del Toro. You’ll be captivated the first time you watch it, and a second viewing reveals a deeper understanding of all the characters and what drives them.
2) Inception

Similar to films like *Interstellar*, *The Prestige*, and *Tenet*, *Inception* is a Christopher Nolan science fiction movie that really benefits from being watched again. What makes *Inception* easy to rewatch is its focus on compelling and interesting characters.
Out of Christopher Nolan’s science fiction films, *Interstellar* holds up best on repeat viewings. While the twist in *The Prestige* feels somewhat obvious, and *Tenet* remains difficult to fully understand no matter how many times you watch it, *Inception* becomes much clearer the second time around. When it first came out, the complex story was hard to follow because audiences were so captivated by the film’s world and the relationship between Leonardo DiCaprio’s Cobb and Marion Cotillard’s Mal.
1) Seven

Let’s be honest, *Seven* is a very disturbing movie and isn’t for everyone-many people won’t even watch it once, let alone twice. Plus, the experience is best the first time around, but the ending has been so widely shared and parodied online that it’s hard to go into the movie with fresh eyes anymore.
Watching the movie *Seven* a second time offers a deeper experience. While the first viewing centers on solving the mystery, a rewatch allows you to fully immerse yourself in the film’s atmosphere, which is set in a city that’s never named. Knowing what’s going to happen to Tracy Mills (Gwyneth Paltrow) also makes her scene with Detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman) even more heartbreaking.
