I’m a huge fan of the characters who’ve been able to lift Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir! It’s not just about strength, you know? The hammer’s magically enchanted so only those truly worthy can even pick it up. Obviously, Thor’s the main one, but it’s been amazing to see others step up – Captain America, Jane Foster, and even Vision have all proven they have what it takes. It’s such a cool part of the Marvel Universe!
Being able to lift Mjolnir requires a special combination of strength and character – bravery alongside humility, and a good heart balanced with a willingness to fight for what’s right. Beyond the world of Marvel comics, many popular fictional characters possess these qualities and could likely prove worthy of wielding Thor’s powerful hammer.
Samwise Gamgee Has a Pure Heart and a Fighting Spirit
Samwise Gamgee, portrayed by Sean Astin in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, is often considered one of the most genuinely good characters in all of literature. A simple gardener from the Shire, Sam joins a perilous journey solely to safeguard his friend, Frodo Baggins. He confronts terrifying creatures and brutal armies, and even ventures into the dark land of Mordor—all while remaining loyal and resisting the power of the One Ring.
A key factor in who can lift Mjolnir is whether the power would corrupt them. Samwise Gamgee once briefly held a power greater than Mjolnir’s – Sauron’s One Ring – and successfully resisted its corrupting influence when he carried it instead of Frodo. This demonstrates his strong character and suggests he could be trusted with Thor’s power.
Sam has demonstrated he’s willing to defend what’s right, even with great sacrifice—a quality Mjolnir demands of those who lift it. Despite not coming from a powerful background, Sam might actually be more deserving of wielding the ancient hammer than anyone else. Interestingly, he probably wouldn’t even want to, and that selflessness is what makes him truly worthy.
Aang the Last Airbender Wields Great Power With Responsibility
Aang, the main character, is a young boy who can control air – he’s also the newest in a line of powerful “Avatars” able to master all four elements. The story follows his journey to learn these skills before a major threat destroys the world. Even though he’s young, Aang uses his powers responsibly, focusing on protecting others instead of seeking personal gain.
Aang is already a powerful and responsible individual, making him a good candidate to wield Mjolnir. While he can already fly and might eventually master lightning through firebending, he may not even want the extra power. Nevertheless, his consistently selfless nature – his refusal to seek revenge even when justified – clearly demonstrates that he is worthy of wielding Thor’s power.
Brienne of Tarth is Honorable Above All Else
Honestly, Westeros is a pretty rough place, and it’s hard to find genuinely good people. Most of the nobles in King’s Landing are either crooked or just obsessed with getting more power. The Targaryens always seem to be looking out for themselves, and even the Starks, who everyone thinks of as honorable, often just sit things out when it gets difficult. That’s why Brienne of Tarth really stands out to me – she’s the only one who consistently feels like a true hero, a genuinely noble person in a world that’s seriously lacking one.
Brienne of Tarth, an island off the coast of Westeros, is incredibly loyal and always keeps her promises. In the world of Game of Thrones, where trust is rare, she’s one of the few characters you can truly believe, making her exceptionally honorable.
Brienne of Tarth is an incredibly brave and loyal warrior, but what truly sets her apart is her humility. She’s a remarkably down-to-earth person despite all her strengths, and she’d be a perfect candidate to wield Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir – possibly the only one in Westeros deserving of such an honor.
Percy Jackson Resists the Allure of Power for What Is Truly Important
Percy Jackson is a demigod featured in a popular book series and a recent Disney+ show. As the son of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, he’s incredibly powerful. Throughout his journeys, Percy battles legendary creatures like the Minotaur and prevents the return of the powerful Titans.
Percy is exceptionally strong, but what truly sets him apart is his kind heart, which he developed thanks to his mother’s devoted and selfless love – a stark contrast to how the gods treat their own children. Because of this, Percy Jackson deserves to be considered worthy of wielding Thor’s hammer.
As a huge Percy Jackson fan, one of the things that always stuck with me was the ending of The Last Olympian. After everything Percy went through – defeating the Titans and saving Olympus – he actually turned down becoming a god! Can you believe it? He chose to stay with his friends and family instead of taking on all that power. It really showed what was important to him, and it was such a powerful moment.
This shows Percy is motivated by love and doing what’s right, rather than a desire for power or fame. These are exactly the qualities Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer, seeks in someone worthy. What’s even more fascinating is that Percy might actually have the chance to wield Mjolnir someday, since he lives in a world where gods from Norse mythology—and many other mythologies—are real, including Thor and his powerful hammer.
Mulan Balances a Warrior’s Might and Personal Honor
Mulan is a legendary warrior known for her bravery and skill. What sets her apart isn’t a desire for fame, but her deep love for her father. When he’s called to serve in the army despite his age and frail health, Mulan bravely disguises herself as a man to take his place. Through courage and determination, she ultimately saves the Emperor and defeats the invading Huns.
As a huge fan, I’ve always thought Mulan would be exactly the kind of person Mjolnir would choose! It’s not just about strength, but how she fights – completely fearless and willing to sacrifice everything, not for glory, but to protect her family and home. That willingness to fight and even bleed for what she believes in? That’s seriously honorable, and it totally lines up with the old Norse beliefs that inspired the legend of Mjolnir in the first place.
After saving China, she modestly turned down the Emperor’s offer of great power, choosing instead to go back to her simple life with family – exactly what she’d originally set out to do.
Luke Skywalker Fights the Power of the Dark Side With Love
Luke Skywalker is widely considered the most powerful Jedi in the Star Wars galaxy. Inheriting a strong connection to the Force from his family, Luke plays a crucial role in the fight against the evil Galactic Empire during the original trilogy. Throughout his journey, he learns the truth about his father and ultimately finds acceptance.
Man, Luke Skywalker is just amazing, isn’t he? When the Emperor tries to turn him to the dark side, Luke totally resists – he doesn’t fall like his dad did. And even better, he actually reaches Anakin and helps him find his way back to the light before it’s too late. To me, Luke is the ultimate example of a true hero: he’ll fight when he has to, but he always sticks to what he believes in. Honestly, I think he’d be one of the few people worthy of lifting Mjolnir, but even Thor’s power seems small compared to what Luke can do with the Force.
Superman Is a Paragon of Hope
Superman is a hero who dedicates his life to protecting those who can’t protect themselves from the world’s dangers. Though an alien from Krypton, he remains deeply human, equally concerned with small rescues and massive threats. He represents hope and fairness, and has become a role model for many other heroes.
Superman embodies hope, truth, and justice – the same values that Mjolnir responds to. He’s proven he’s willing to make difficult choices, even kill if absolutely necessary, which is a requirement to lift Thor’s hammer. Unlike the idea that power corrupts, Superman uses his incredible strength to help others, making him truly deserving of wielding Mjolnir. This has even been shown in team-up stories between Marvel and DC Comics, where Superman has successfully lifted and used the hammer, proving his worthiness.
