Science fiction has given us countless memorable stories over the years, and many of the most beloved are TV shows. The best sci-fi series often become hugely popular, leaving a lasting impact on pop culture. Shows like Star Trek and The Twilight Zone were pioneers, helping to establish science fiction as a regular feature of television – and it’s remained popular ever since. While new sci-fi shows are released every year, few achieve the same level of success as the genre’s classics.
While a few sci-fi shows become classics, many more are quickly forgotten. Some deserve more attention, but most are simply unremarkable. Even among all the sci-fi shows that gain a following, there are always series that never quite break through and are largely unknown to the public.
7) Class (BBC, 2016)

As a big sci-fi fan, I honestly don’t get why Class isn’t more well-known. It’s a Doctor Who spin-off, which should automatically give it a fanbase, but it feels totally forgotten after ten years. I think a lot of the original Who fans were turned off by how much darker and grittier it was. It wasn’t a perfect show, by any means, but it’s strange how quickly it disappeared from the conversation after it was cancelled.
6) Almost Human (Fox, 2013)

Many science fiction TV shows have been cancelled too soon, and Almost Human is a prime example. The show, starring Karl Urban and Michael Ealy, was set in a futuristic world where a police officer who didn’t trust robots was forced to work with an android partner. Despite being a compelling dystopian sci-fi series, it was cancelled after only one season, sadly turning it into a bit of a hidden gem for dedicated fans.
5) Future Man (Hulu, 2017-2020)

There are a lot of science fiction shows available, but that doesn’t mean good ones shouldn’t get noticed. Future Man was a genuinely funny and clever sci-fi series that unfortunately didn’t find a large audience. After being cancelled, it was even removed from streaming platforms, making it even harder to find – despite being a quality show.
4) Terra Nova (Fox, 2011-2012)

Terra Nova is a classic example of a promising science fiction TV show that was unfortunately cancelled after just one season. The series centers on the Shannon family’s move to a colony established 85 million years ago, swapping a bleak, polluted future for the relatively untouched environment of the Cretaceous Period. Despite having huge potential and the backing of renowned producer Steven Spielberg, the show has largely faded from memory since its cancellation.
3) Dark Matter (Syfy, 2015-2017)

Lots of TV shows have been adapted from comic books, and while some, like The Walking Dead and Arrow, become huge hits, others, like Dark Matter, don’t get as much attention. Dark Matter ran for three seasons before being cancelled in 2017, leaving its story unfinished. The show had a good concept – a group of people wake up on a spaceship with no memories – but it wasn’t enough to make it a lasting success, and it’s largely been forgotten since it ended.
2) Bugs (BBC, 1995-1999)

While many British science fiction series have become international hits, Bugs wasn’t one of them. This BBC show, which ran from 1995 to 1999, centered on a team of tech specialists who fought crime involving computers and futuristic technology. Despite coming from the same creator as popular shows like The Avengers and The Professionals, Bugs failed to gain a strong following and is now largely forgotten by most science fiction enthusiasts.
1) Lexx (Syfy, 1996-2002)

Often overlooked, Lexx was a unique 1990s sci-fi series that blended quirky humor with surprisingly deep and emotional storylines. It was ahead of its time in exploring the idea of multiple universes, following the adventures of a crew aboard a living spaceship as they traveled between two very different realities. Despite its originality, Lexx never achieved mainstream success and remains a favorite among a dedicated group of fans, but isn’t widely known today.
