7 Old MCU Scenes That Really Don’t Make Sense Any More

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become incredibly popular and successful thanks to its constantly developing storyline. Starting with Iron Man in 2008, the MCU has grown into a massive franchise, bringing countless characters and stories from Marvel Comics to life on screen. As the universe expands and new ideas are introduced, some earlier movies sometimes feel different in retrospect, but the overall story continues to evolve with each new installment and character discovery.

A challenge with the way the story has evolved is that it sometimes creates inconsistencies with earlier events. Details introduced in newer movies and shows can clash with things established previously, making older scenes seem confusing or illogical in retrospect. Essentially, what’s considered official story information now doesn’t always align with what happened in the earlier films.

7) Tony Stark Touches the Tesseract

The Infinity Stones were central to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ‘Infinity Saga,’ but some parts of their story don’t quite make sense. For example, in Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark safely retrieves the Tesseract (which contains the Space Stone) from a facility in the 1970s. This is odd, because other characters who touched Infinity Stones were either harmed or overwhelmed by their immense power.

6) Thor’s Vision in Age of Ultron

Many fans consider Avengers: Age of Ultron to be the weakest of the Avengers films, and it’s easy to see why, especially given how later movies seem to ignore parts of it. There’s a scene where Thor visits the Pool of Sight and discovers Loki’s scepter holds the Mind Stone and that Thanos is the real threat. While this moves the story forward, it feels like the Avengers should have immediately started planning to stop Thanos. Instead, it creates a confusing inconsistency within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

5) All the Scenes Where Rhodey was a Skrull

So far, Secret Invasion is considered the weakest of Marvel’s Disney+ series. A major plot twist reveals that Rhodey, a key Avenger, was secretly a Skrull shapeshifter for a while. Looking back, this makes many of his scenes confusing, as viewers struggle to determine when the real Rhodey was replaced. Trying to piece together what’s genuine and what’s the Skrull impostor distracts from, and ultimately harms, Rhodey’s story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

4) Thanos’ First Appearance

The 2012 film The Avengers was hugely important for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both for bringing the Avengers team to life and for first introducing the character of Thanos in a now-famous post-credits scene. That scene hinted at the Infinity War storyline from the comics, with Thanos mentioning his pursuit of Death. However, since Death hasn’t played a role in Thanos’s plans in the MCU, the scene feels less impactful and doesn’t quite connect the same way it did when The Avengers first came out.

3) Red Skull’s “Death”

The rules for handling Infinity Stones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe aren’t always consistent, but even ignoring that, Red Skull’s fate after seemingly dying in Captain America: The First Avenger doesn’t quite add up. Touching the Tesseract – which held the Space Stone – didn’t actually kill him, but instead sent him to Vormir, where he was forced to guard the Soul Stone. The movie never explained why or how touching the Tesseract led to this outcome, making his apparent death scene feel confusing and illogical.

2) Civil War’s Spider-Man Post-Credits scene

As a big Marvel fan, I remember when they first brought Spider-Man into the MCU with that Stark-tech suit. It was cool, but looking back, there’s this one little thing that feels totally forgotten. In the post-credits scene of Captain America: Civil War, Peter discovers his web-shooters can project some kind of interface – it was clearly hinting at all the cool tech in the suit. But we never see that feature again! Honestly, rewatching it now, that whole scene feels a bit pointless because it doesn’t connect to anything else. It’s a small detail, but it bugs me a little!

1) All Suggestions of Scarlet Witch Being a Mutant

The Scarlet Witch is still considered one of the most powerful magic users in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but some parts of her backstory now feel unclear. The movies hinted that Wanda’s powers came from her being a mutant, which excited fans about the potential arrival of the X-Men. However, with Wanda’s death and the introduction of the Mutant Saga, those earlier scenes now seem unnecessary and confusing. While there’s still a chance these hints will be explained, right now they appear to have served no real purpose.
