Over the last ten years, several anime series have become modern classics, standing out for their popularity, critical praise, and lasting impact. My Hero Academia is definitely one of them, delivering a remarkably complete and engaging superhero anime. It successfully blends action and fantasy, featuring a large and diverse cast of characters, each contributing to the show’s complex and expansive story.
Many characters attend U.A. High School, a training academy for future heroes. It’s where Izuku Midoriya, the main character, strives to become the world’s greatest hero with his friends. While several students demonstrate impressive abilities, some haven’t had a chance to fully showcase their potential. This list highlights seven U.A. students who could have contributed more to the story if given the opportunity.
7) Itsuka Kendo

Itsuka Kendo is a student in Class 1-B at U.A. High School, often seen as a counterpart to the students in Class 1-A. She’s considered the leader and representative of her class, and many believe she has the skills to become a dependable hero. While she’s considered a rival to Momo Yaoyorozu from Class 1-A, their relationship is actually quite friendly and they support each other.
I’ve noticed everyone always talks about how friendly and well-managed Kendo’s class is, but I don’t think people fully appreciate how powerful her Quirk, Big First, actually is. It lets her enlarge her hands to deliver incredibly strong hits. Beyond just hitting hard, it also gives her a great ability to grab and hold things, and really boosts her power in close-quarters fights. She might not be able to attack from as far away as some of her classmates, but she’s definitely shown she has the raw strength to become a seriously impressive Pro Hero when she uses her Quirk.
6) Ibara Shiozaki

Ibara Shiozaki is a student from Class 1-B who doesn’t get featured as often as some of the more outgoing characters. However, she’s easily recognizable thanks to her striking design – bright green hair styled like thick vines. Unlike many heroes in My Hero Academia, Shiozaki prefers to avoid fighting whenever possible, as she’s a pacifist and only battles when she has to or is attacked.
Shiozaki’s Quirk, called Vines, lets her control the long vines that make up her hair. She can change their length, detach them, and even alter their thickness and shape using her own will. We see her power in action when she fights Kaminari, creating a huge shield of vines to restrain him. This Quirk is very versatile, allowing for both strong attacks and solid defense, making Shiozaki a valuable asset in actual battles.
5) Hitoshi Shinso

Hitoshi Shinso immediately won over many students at U.A., even though he wasn’t enrolled in a hero course at first. He desperately wanted to prove that his Quirk wasn’t a disadvantage and be able to train alongside the other aspiring heroes, hoping to become a Pro Hero after graduation. With Aizawa’s support, he ultimately achieves this dream. Shinso’s story highlights his strong commitment to becoming a hero and his dedication to constant improvement, all despite his quiet and reserved personality.
Shinso’s Quirk, Brainwashing, lets him control people after they respond to a question he asks while his Quirk is active. He can control multiple people, but he has to activate it on them one at a time, which can be slow. Recently, he’s gained new equipment that allows him to copy other people’s voices. This helps him trick people into answering in a way that activates his Quirk, making it much more effective in fast-paced fights.
4) Momo Yaoyorozu

Momo Yaoyorozu is a student in Class 1-A who often provides a moral compass and leadership for her classmates. She’s elected vice president and takes both that role and her hero training very seriously. Momo is consistently portrayed as calm, reliable, dedicated, and a hard worker, always striving to improve herself, especially during her U.A. internship. Years after the major conflict in the series, it’s revealed she has become one of the top twenty highest-ranked Pro Heroes.
Yaoyorozu’s high ranking is understandable given her Quirk, Creation. This ability significantly enhances her strength and offers incredible versatility, arguably surpassing most other Quirks in the series, despite often being underestimated. Creation allows her to produce any non-living object by converting her body fat into the necessary materials, effectively making her a mobile workshop. While she does need to consume enough food to fuel this process, it doesn’t diminish how adaptable and special her Quirk truly is.
3) Neito Monoma

Neito Monoma was often presented as a rival to Class 1-A, which caused people to underestimate his true abilities and adaptability in fights. As a student in Class 1-B, he felt envious of Class 1-A’s popularity after the U.S.J. Incident, leading to his class being ignored. This made him act openly critical and mocking towards Class 1-A, though he’s generally shown to be smart and kind when with his own classmates. Surprisingly, after the war, Monoma rose through the ranks to become the Number 10 Pro Hero.
Monoma’s Quirk, called Copy, lets him replicate another person’s abilities simply by touching them. He can store up to four Quirks at once, but each copied ability lasts for about ten minutes before he loses access to it. While there’s a limit to how fast he can switch between Quirks, he can still steal and use a variety of powerful skills in battle. This makes his Quirk incredibly strong, as demonstrated when he copies Kurogiri’s warping ability during the final war arc of the story.
2) Denki Kaminari

Denki Kaminari from My Hero Academia is a character many fans feel hasn’t reached his full potential. He’s a popular character known for being the class clown, his unique fighting style, and his strong friendships, especially with characters like Bakugo, Kirishima, Sero, and Mina. While he often provides comic relief, Kaminari is a truly loyal and kind friend. Because he’s part of such a strong friend group, fans often compare his growth and power to theirs.
Kaminari has a powerful Quirk called Electrification, letting him store and release electricity, which initially suggested he’d be a top student at U.A. High. Similarly, Todoroki is consistently one of the strongest characters, with an elemental power that has few weaknesses. While controlling electricity is a strong ability, Kaminari often doesn’t live up to his potential because his Quirk can overwhelm his brain, and he struggles to regulate its output. Despite moments showing his growth and capability, My Hero Academia consistently prevents Kaminari from reaching the same level as other powerful characters.
1) Ochaco Uraraka

Ochaco Uraraka is a surprisingly underutilized character in My Hero Academia. Her Quirk could potentially defeat many of the villains the heroes face, but she’s consistently placed on the sidelines. Initially, she wants to become a pro hero to financially support her family, but her motivations expand to wanting to help anyone in need. Her strength is evident even early in the series – during her fight with Bakugo in the Sports Festival, he recognizes her as a powerful and determined opponent.
Ochaco has the potential to be a fantastic character, but the story doesn’t use her abilities enough. Her Quirk, Zero Gravity, lets her make things weightless, though she can only affect up to three tons and overusing it makes her sick. This power, controlling gravity, could be incredibly strong – similar to the character Chuuya Nakahara in Bungo Stray Dogs, who is a major force because of his gravity manipulation. Even without gaining a power boost later on, Ochaco could have played a bigger role in battles, either by attacking or helping to defend.
