As a comic book movie critic, let me tell you, Superman is a fascinating case. On paper, you might think there are stronger beings in the DC Universe, but in practice, he’s consistently shown to be one of the most overwhelmingly powerful heroes ever created. I mean, the guy routinely flies faster than light and can move planets! Seriously, trying to defeat him would take a god – literally. We’re talking Yahweh, Lucifer, the big players. He is the ultimate champion of good, but that doesn’t mean he wins every time. Over the years, we’ve seen him struggle and even lose to some truly terrifying villains. He’s incredibly powerful, maybe the most powerful, but he’s not invincible. That’s what makes watching him so compelling.
While DC Comics is often praised for its incredibly powerful heroes, Marvel has its share of characters who could easily dominate in any universe. But even among Marvel’s strongest, only a select few have a realistic chance of defeating Superman. Here are seven Marvel heroes who are powerful enough to actually win against the Man of Steel, showcasing just how formidable they are.
7) Magik

Magik, a prominent figure from The New Mutants, is arguably the most formidable character. While she may not seem overwhelmingly powerful at first glance, she’s incredibly dangerous. As a highly skilled magic user – many believe she deserved the title of Sorcerer Supreme – and hardened by battles in the demonic realm of Limbo, Magik possesses the mutant ability to teleport anyone, anywhere. She isn’t as physically strong or fast as Superman, but her Soulsword could definitely harm him. More importantly, she could use her teleportation powers to banish him to a black hole, the space between universes, or even the middle of a never-ending demon war in Limbo. It wouldn’t be a glorious victory, but she could win.
6) Captain Universe

As a huge comic fan, I have to say Jonathan Hickman’s run on Avengers was incredible. He assembled this unbelievably powerful team, and you’d think the heavy hitters like Thor, Captain Marvel, or even the Hulk-like Hyperion would be the biggest deal, but it was actually Captain Universe who stole the show. She was this woman in a coma who was basically filled with the power of the entire universe. Seriously, she could do anything. If Superman ever came at her, she’d just drain his energy instantly. But honestly, it wouldn’t even be a fight – they’d probably just end up having a philosophical conversation about, well, everything, because she is the universe, essentially.
5) Silver Surfer

Both Silver Surfer and Superman are incredibly powerful, perhaps too much so. However, the Silver Surfer has an edge in a fight between them due to the Power Cosmic. This ability lets him control energy, and he could potentially convert the yellow sun radiation that powers Superman into something else, effectively stripping him of his abilities. Surfer’s speed and durability would also allow him to survive long enough to discover this winning strategy. Like many battles between heroes of this caliber, they’d likely become friends afterward, and it would be an amazing fight to witness.
4) Doctor Strange

Even though Doctor Strange no longer holds the title of Sorcerer Supreme, he remains Marvel’s most skilled magic user. He’s consistently defended the universe from powerful mystical dangers and has mastered all forms of magic. Superman is vulnerable to magic, and Strange is intelligent enough to exploit that weakness. Having battled incredibly powerful foes for years, Strange is well-equipped to handle Superman; it might be a challenging fight, but the former surgeon would ultimately prevail.
3) Phoenix

Jean Grey is incredibly powerful, and with the return of the Phoenix Force, her abilities have reached new heights. She’s essentially become a cosmic entity, surpassing even gods in power, and could easily defeat Superman. She’s demonstrated feats like stopping a black hole, and can essentially manipulate reality at will. While she could drain Superman’s energy, she’s also capable of overwhelming him with powerful telekinesis and telepathy, all while protecting herself. In a serious fight, he wouldn’t stand a chance, and even without intending to, she could simply incapacitate him with a thought.
2) Scarlet Witch

Scarlet Witch, now the Sorcerer Supreme, is incredibly powerful thanks to her reality-warping abilities. While she’s vulnerable – she can inflict massive damage but isn’t very durable – she could potentially defeat Superman. His weakness to magic, combined with her intelligence and experience fighting powerful foes, gives her a chance. She has a wide range of spells and tactics she could use against him. It would be a difficult fight, and a single mistake would likely cost her the win, but ‘could’ simply means she has the potential to win, even if it’s not a guarantee.
1) Thor

Thor, Marvel’s most experienced fighter, could defeat Superman under the right circumstances, much like Scarlet Witch could. While Thor isn’t as physically strong, fast, or resilient as Superman, his magical abilities give him a fighting chance. Superman can withstand a lot, but even he would be overwhelmed by repeated blasts of magical lightning and energy from Mjolnir. Thor’s powerful hammer attacks, aimed directly at Superman, would be incredibly difficult to endure. Ultimately, if Superman doesn’t try to quickly overwhelm Thor with his superior speed and strength, Thor has a good chance of winning.
