7 PS4 Games That Defined the 2010s

The PlayStation 4 was a huge win for Sony. After the PlayStation 3 had a somewhat slow start, Sony needed to regain its fanbase. While the PS3 wasn’t a flop, it didn’t sell as well as the PlayStation 2 or PlayStation 1. Sony took those lessons to heart and really outperformed its rivals with smart business decisions and great games. Several of those games became particularly memorable for PS4 players and helped shape the gaming experience of the decade.

Here are seven games that defined the 2010s.

7) Until Dawn

I could mention many other great games, like Horizon Zero Dawn, but I want to highlight Supermassive Games for bringing something new to the horror genre. Playing Until Dawn with friends is a blast – it’s like watching a scary movie with a group and reacting to all the twists and scares. You’ll definitely shout at the screen when characters die or when something jumps out! Plus, the game looks amazing and really showed off the potential of the PS4 when it first came out.

6) Destiny

Bungie, known previously for the Halo series, really showed its strength with Destiny. This multiplayer shooter, where players collect loot, became incredibly popular in the 2010s, leading to a sequel and numerous expansions. While player interest goes up and down depending on new content releases, there’s a unique enjoyment in tackling a new Destiny raid with friends. Personally, though, I’ve never been a fan of how the game removes previously earned items.

5) Resident Evil 7

Following the somewhat chaotic release of Resident Evil 6, the series desperately needed a fresh start. Even fans who enjoyed its over-the-top action agreed that Capcom had lost its direction. Luckily, Resident Evil 7 was a huge success, immediately revitalizing the franchise and delivering a truly terrifying experience. It’s widely considered the scariest game in the series and effectively put things back on course. Since then, Capcom has consistently released excellent games, giving the Resident Evil series a well-deserved resurgence.

4) Red Dead Redemption 2

Let’s be honest, Red Dead 2 can sometimes be a bit slow and the missions can feel restrictive. You might even wish it was a TV series instead of a game! However, when it’s at its best, Red Dead 2 tells a story that’s among the very best in gaming.

Red Dead Redemption 2 boasts an incredibly detailed open world, so rich with things to do that it often feels surprisingly realistic. It’s truly an impressive game. However, I’m not sure I could ever bring myself to play it again. I’ve had enough of constantly failing missions and seeing the game over screen, especially after simply getting a little off track.

3) Overwatch

Overwatch was a significant title for Blizzard for a few key reasons. Its popularity as a leading hero shooter provided a substantial new revenue stream for the company, which already had successful games like World of Warcraft and Hearthstone. While not essential, the additional income from the game’s loot boxes was certainly welcome. Additionally, Overwatch marked the first time Blizzard released a game simultaneously on both consoles and PC.

It took a year for Diablo 3 to become available on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Overwatch demonstrated that Blizzard, traditionally a PC game developer, was starting to embrace consoles. While they didn’t bring World of Warcraft to consoles, Overwatch was a positive move in that direction.

2) God of War

Both God of War and Red Dead 2 came out in 2018, which is relatively recent for a ‘best of’ list. However, it’s undeniable that Santa Monica Studios completely reimagined the character of Kratos. I never expected to be so invested in his story – previously, he was mostly known for being angry. But Santa Monica Studio managed to create a compelling and surprisingly relatable ‘Dad Kratos,’ making him one of Sony’s most memorable characters.

Beyond everything else, the improved gameplay was fantastic, especially the way you can freely explore the large, connected areas. Kratos has a variety of weapons, and each one is really satisfying to use. The developers at Santa Monica also included some incredibly difficult challenges, giving dedicated players a lot of incentive to continue exploring the world of God of War.

1) Bloodborne

It figured it would be Bloodborne, right? Players are still desperately hoping Sony and FromSoftware will remake this game, which is heavily inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. Sadly, a remake doesn’t seem likely; FromSoftware will probably focus on Elden Ring 2 before revisiting Bloodborne.

Despite FromSoftware having many highly-regarded games, Bloodborne remains one of their very best. Its combat is faster than Dark Souls but more forgiving than Sekiro, striking a perfect balance between the two. Combined with a uniquely fascinating game world, Bloodborne is a true classic that every gamer should experience.
