7 Recent HBO Shows Everyone Needs To Watch

We’re currently enjoying a fantastic time for entertainment, especially when it comes to television. Streaming and cable services give us access to more shows and movies than ever before. With so many great options to choose from, whether you want to watch a single episode or binge-watch an entire series, it’s easy to get lost in the world of TV. While many people enjoy revisiting older shows, there are also plenty of newer series worth checking out, and HBO is home to several excellent ones.

HBO and HBO Max have produced a lot of excellent, newer TV series worth watching. With shows spanning many different genres, there’s something for everyone. We’re leaving out a couple of the most popular titles, like The Last of Us and The Penguin, to highlight seven other fantastic shows you might not have discovered yet – they’re all really well-made and deserve your attention.

7) Chernobyl

Although it’s been nearly six years since it first aired, HBO’s Chernobyl remains a compelling watch. The five-episode miniseries recounts the story of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, which will mark its 40th anniversary next year. Created by Craig Mazin, the series powerfully and respectfully details the explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, from the initial event through the cleanup and its lasting consequences. It’s a terrifying but dignified portrayal of a horrific historical event.

This series powerfully portrays one of history’s most frightening and mysterious events, making this recent tragedy feel deeply personal. While the creator has since achieved acclaim with The Last of Us, Chernobyl is also a must-watch.

6) Scavengers Reign

No list of great TV shows would be complete without mentioning animation, and if you’re looking for one on HBO, definitely check out Scavengers Reign. This beautifully animated show for adults only lasted one season, which is a shame. It follows the crew of a damaged spaceship, the Demeter 227, who crash-land on the alien planet Vesta. Vesta is stunning, but also incredibly dangerous, and the survivors must navigate the landscape while dealing with both the alien environment and conflicts among themselves.

I was completely blown away by Scavengers Reign. The animation is just stunning – honestly, every single scene feels like a beautiful piece of art on its own. But it’s not just pretty to look at, the story is really good too! Even if you don’t usually watch animated shows, I think any sci-fi fan would absolutely love this one.

5) The Pitt

HBO’s The Pitt is quickly becoming one of their best new shows. Though medical dramas are common, The Pitt is unique because it tells its story in real-time, following the staff of the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center during their 15-hour shifts. Each episode covers a single hour of the workday, and the first season consists of 15 episodes. The show skillfully blends compelling medical cases with the real-life struggles faced by healthcare professionals.

What makes The Pitt stand out is its willingness to leave some mysteries unsolved and avoid getting lost in overly complicated plots. While the characters all have personal stories, it’s not your typical medical drama. Plus, good news – the show has already been renewed for a second season, so you can expect more episodes if you enjoy it.

4) The Gilded Age

HBO’s The Gilded Age had a bit of a winding path to the screen, initially developed at NBC before premiering in 2022. The show, praised by critics, recently finished its third season and has been renewed for a fourth. Set in 1880s New York City during a time of rapid growth, it explores the city’s strict social rules and the clashes between established families and newly wealthy ones. Though a historical drama, many viewers have found surprising connections to modern issues, especially regarding the growth of labor movements.

The show is gaining a lot of attention online, with viewers becoming invested in both the fictional characters and the real-life people they’re based on. It’s a captivating series that starts a little slow, but quickly becomes very rewarding – and fans are hoping to see more of the character Gladys in the next season!

3) Peacemaker

Even if you don’t usually watch superhero shows, Peacemaker on HBO is a must-see. It’s not only one of the best superhero series ever created, but also a genuinely hilarious comedy. John Cena plays Peacemaker (also known as Christopher Smith), a flawed hero with a difficult past who’s trying to save the world and improve himself. He teams up with a group of equally quirky individuals, and the result is surprisingly fantastic.

What makes Peacemaker so good is its ability to embrace the wild, over-the-top nature of comic books and amplify it, while still grounding the story in relatable human emotions. The first season focused on an alien invasion, and the second introduced a surprising alternate universe. Both seasons are filled with both hilarious and genuinely moving moments, delivered by some of the best acting on TV. Plus, you can’t forget the incredibly memorable opening dance sequences!

2) The Chair Company

The latest addition to the lineup, The Chair Company, is unusual because it blends comedy with thriller elements. Created by Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin, the team behind I Think You Should Leave, the series centers around William Ronald Trosper (played by Robinson). After a humiliating incident – a chair breaking under him during a presentation – Trosper becomes convinced of a vast conspiracy and gets increasingly entangled in its mysteries.

The show has been picked up for another season, and what makes it so good is its unique humor – it’s quirky and sometimes a little uncomfortable, but it also tells a truly captivating mystery. You’ll find yourself wondering if the main character, William, is actually discovering something important. It’s a surprisingly addictive watch.

1) The Righteous Gemstones

HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones is a hilarious and surprisingly sharp series that blends crime comedy with religious satire. The show follows the Gemstone family, a group of wealthy televangelists in South Carolina, led by the patriarch Eli (John Goodman). His adult children – Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin – are all a bit immature and constantly compete for control of the family’s megachurch. The show is filled with eccentric and often cynical characters, like a former satanist turned minister and a stressed-out accountant constantly cleaning up messes. A standout is Walter Goggins as Baby Billy Freeman, Eli’s brother-in-law – a washed-up child star, compulsive liar, and the leader of a church located in a shopping mall, who quickly became a fan favorite.

This show is both funny and surprisingly insightful, brilliantly tackling the strange world of televangelism. It covers everything from Christian timeshares and mega-church malls to messy family drama – and that’s just the beginning! It’s a must-watch.
