As a huge comic fan, I’ve always thought science fiction was one of the most important genres out there. It’s actually pretty young, considering it only started around 207 years ago with a story like Frankenstein. But it didn’t really take off until the early 1900s, when writers like H.G. Wells and those exciting pulp novels made it really popular. To me, sci-fi and comics just belong together – the words and pictures create something truly special. It became a huge part of superhero comics, of course, but there are also tons of amazing sci-fi comics that aren’t about superheroes, and they’re constantly showing us what the genre can really do!
Image Comics and other publishers are delivering fantastic new science fiction comics. These stories are among the best in the genre, and even dedicated sci-fi fans will find something to love in these seven recommendations.
7) Prophet

The comic book Prophet originally appeared in the 1990s but didn’t last as its publisher lost popularity. It made a comeback in the 2010s with a completely revamped story. This new version is set far in the future, after the Earth Empire – built around the supersoldier John Prophet – has been defeated. However, the Empire is gearing up for a new war to reclaim its lost territory. As other ‘Prophets’ begin to emerge across the universe, the original Prophet, who helped defeat the Empire, returns. This comic feels a lot like Dune; it immediately immerses you in a detailed universe, revealing its history as the story unfolds. It’s a fantastic story that any science fiction fan should enjoy.
6) The Incal

Moebius is considered one of the most important comic book artists ever, known for his clean and beautiful style that works perfectly for science fiction. While many of his comics are fantastic – including Arzach, Blueberry, and Silver Surfer: Parable – The Incal is a must-read for any sci-fi fan. This story paired Moebius with filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, famous for his bizarre and dreamlike work. The Incal draws inspiration from Jodorowsky’s unmade Dune movie – the two met during its early stages – and takes readers on an incredible journey with detective John Difool. He navigates a broken empire, encounters strange aliens, and gets caught up in a world of mystery and the supernatural. The Incal is a deeply imaginative and surreal sci-fi experience, brought to life by Moebius’s stunning artwork. It’s a true masterpiece of the genre, and you won’t be disappointed.
5) StarHenge Book One: The Lion and the Boar

Liam Sharp is a remarkably talented comic book writer and artist, especially skilled in science fiction, superhero stories, and fantasy. His creator-owned comic, StarHenge Book One: The Lion and the Boar, launched him into the world of sci-fi/fantasy comics. The story is set in a distant future where humans and machines are locked in conflict. Both sides send troops back in time to when magic first appeared—one to safeguard it, the other to eliminate it—ultimately shaping the legend of Camelot and impacting the present day. StarHenge is a beautifully illustrated and expertly written piece of science fiction. It’s truly excellent, and worth reading so Sharp can continue the series!
4) Nameless

Grant Morrison is a truly exceptional comic book creator, known for working across many different genres. While science fiction has always been a key part of their work – with titles like the hard-to-find Annihilator being particularly noteworthy – their best sci-fi comic is arguably Nameless, illustrated by Chris Burnham. This book is a stunning cosmic horror story about Nameless, an occult detective, who’s tasked with protecting Earth from a mysterious threat arriving from space. It’s a complex and thought-provoking Morrison story that’s widely celebrated, and Burnham’s artwork perfectly captures the terrifying imagery that defines the cosmic horror genre.
3) East of West

Considered one of the greatest comics ever published by Image, East of West reimagines American history. Written by Jonathan Hickman and illustrated by Nick Dragotta, the story is set in a world where the Civil War resulted in the United States fracturing into seven separate nations. The war concluded with a mysterious prophecy foretelling a future apocalypse. Years later, Death, one of the Four Horsemen, embarks on a quest for vengeance, threatening to restart the conflict and fulfill the prophecy. This unique blend of Western, science fiction, and apocalyptic themes is consistently outstanding. East of West is a true classic and offers a truly original reading experience.
2) Black Science

Rick Remender and Matteo Scalero’s Black Science is a thrilling, mind-bending journey through the multiverse. The story centers on Grant McKay, a scientist whose invention, the Pillar, allows travel between different realities. He and his team of “Dimensionauts” embark on a test run that quickly spirals into a wild and emotionally charged adventure. What truly sets Black Science apart is its focus on compelling characters—McKay is a deeply flawed but relatable protagonist, and the supporting cast is exceptional. While multiverse stories have become somewhat commonplace, this series uses the concept brilliantly to tell a moving story about life, loss, and the consequences of scientific ambition.
1) Saga

Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ comic series, Saga, is widely considered a masterpiece, particularly in its initial issues. The story centers on Alana, Marko, and their daughter Hazel as they struggle to survive in a galaxy torn apart by a massive war where everyone must choose a side. At its heart, Saga is a deeply moving story about family, love, and perseverance in incredibly challenging times, all wrapped in a compelling science fiction setting. It’s one of the most popular comics of recent years, captivating almost anyone who picks it up and offering everything a sci-fi fan could hope for – and more.
