Black Mirror is a captivating series, available for streaming on Netflix (and other platforms), that stands out due to its thought-provoking nature. Creator Charlie Brooker has managed to craft an anthology similar in quality to the original Twilight Zone, earning him comparisons to Rod Serling. While not categorically a horror show, Black Mirror is undeniably chilling as it offers glimpses into potential dystopian futures lurking just beyond the corner. The series primarily focuses on the impact of rapid technological advancement and unchecked capitalism on society. As for whether the grim future depicted in Black Mirror will come to pass, it’s a matter of “when,” not “if.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the chilling accuracy of “Black Mirror.” Time and again, its prophetic tales have eerily mirrored our reality. From the rise of cartoon characters in politics to the insidious trap of microtransactions, it’s uncanny how many of its predictions have materialized. Here’s a list of seven instances where “Black Mirror” got modern life right.
1) “Be Right Back” (Season 2, Episode 1)
After a tragic car accident takes the life of Martha’s boyfriend Ash, who is also the father of her unborn child, she considers using a contemporary service that allows uploading a deceased person’s social media posts and online communications to create an artificial intelligence replica, a concept first portrayed in the 2013 film “Be Right Back”. Remarkably, this kind of service has become a reality over the past decade.
Eternos.life is a platform where users can create digital replicas of themselves, to exchange knowledge, stories, and other aspects of their lives. The AI versions on Eternos are capable of having incredibly lifelike conversations using your own voice, mirroring the subtleties of your personality, tone, and feelings. Whether or not this technology will become commonplace in the future is uncertain, but it’s fascinating to imagine what reactions it would have received in 17th-century Salem, a time when even the most advanced ideas might have been met with skepticism by Charlie Brooker.
2) “Metalhead” (Season 4, Episode 5)
Metalhead” – A relentless chase thriller where a woman desperately tries to escape a ruthless robotic hound. It’s like blending a Terminator with a determined Rottweiler, and this hybrid is no longer just fiction. In fact, the US Army has already integrated autonomous robot dogs in mining operations, and they are now testing armed mechanical canines.
In a firsthand account as a movie reviewer, allow me to share my thoughts on the latest military development: An article from October 2024 in The Independent paints a chilling picture of our future battlefields. The army’s new robot dog, an unmanned ground vehicle, is no ordinary canine companion. Armed with an AI-enhanced rifle and boasting four legs, it’s more reminiscent of a high-tech Rin-Tin-Tin than the action heroes we grew up with. The days of G.I. Joe-like soldiers might be numbered, as our next global conflict could see us pitted against foes that are less human and more… well, let’s just say they’re giving new meaning to the term “Mystery Incorporated”!
3)”White Bear” (Season 2, Episode 2)
In the story “White Bear,” a woman awakens to discover herself in a novel form of incarceration, not the traditional prison system. Instead, offenders spend their days exploring a mysterious town while spectators capture them on camera and photographs, without ever extending a helping hand. Although no global government has implemented such a sinister penalty so far, the phenomenon of disaster gawking has certainly taken hold in our contemporary society.
Today’s world, much like depicted in Black Mirror, is filled with an abundance of real-time footage from emergencies – incidents such as attacks or car crashes. It has become the norm for bystanders within a few feet of a disaster to pull out their phones and begin recording rather than providing aid first.
4) “Nosedive” (Season 3, Episode 1)
2016’s “Nosedive” extrapolates a familiar phenomenon – rating Uber drivers or Yelp! reviews – to its ultimate form: evaluating people themselves. With advanced eye implants and smartphones, individuals rate every social interaction, yielding an overall score that significantly influences their societal standing and economic prospects. A higher score equates to better housing options, and so forth.
Currently, China is experimenting with a system known as the “social credit score,” though its specific workings may have been sensationalized by Western media. In essence, this score will be given to Chinese citizens, taking into account elements such as financial trustworthiness, data sharing among government agencies, and the promotion of officially endorsed ethical values.
Thanks to Black Mirror, it’s that last one we’re really worried about.
5) “The National Anthem” (Season 1, Episode 1)
In one of Black Mirror’s most contentious episodes, titled “The National Anthem,” a member of the British royal family is taken hostage. The kidnappers make an unusual demand for ransom: the prime minister must publicly perform an intimate act with a pig on live television. When this episode was first aired in 2011, it seemed incredibly improbable that such a scenario would ever unfold in reality. One might wonder, what are the odds of a British prime minister ever participating in bestiality?
Intriguingly, the veracity of the claim can vary greatly depending on who you speak with. Just over five years since “Black Mirror” premiered its first episode, an unauthorized biography surfaced about David Cameron, the former Prime Minister, claiming he engaged in a bizarre college initiation ritual involving a dead pig and his mouth. While we don’t advocate believing every sensational biography, it’s quite chilling that such an act was even accused of happening so similarly to “The National Anthem” episode, isn’t it?
6) “Fifteen Million Merits” (Season 1, Episode 2)
In the fictional world of ‘Fifteen Million Merits’, every aspect of life is controlled by tiny transactions of a universal currency known as merits. From basic necessities like toothpaste and food to luxury items and even the ability to fast-forward through advertisements on television, everything requires merits.
In earlier times like before “Fifteen Million Merits,” microtransactions weren’t as prevalent or annoying as they are now. Have you downloaded the latest app that everyone seems to be obsessed with? Enjoy being interrupted frequently by ads if you didn’t opt for the premium version. Running low on vital currency in your mobile game? You can either wait an hour for more, watch an ad, or simply pay $1.99 to skip all of that.
Fortunately, our situation isn’t as grim as the world portrayed in “Fifteen Million Merits,” but mark my words, it may not be far off.
7) “The Waldo Moment” (Season 2, Episode 3)
The series ‘The Waldo Moment’ could be seen as Charlie Brooker at his most prophetic. This show features a profane cartoon bear named Waldo who surprisingly becomes a political figure with conservative leanings. In the year 2013, it was considered absurd to think that a lewd entertainer would enter politics. While Ronald Reagan did have an acting background before becoming president, his career wasn’t marked by anything controversial. Essentially, Waldo is reminiscent of Cartman from ‘South Park’ ascending to the presidency.
In the year 2016, it was America who chose a personality from reality TV and professional wrestling, as well as an adult film actor, to become their leader. This possibility no longer seemed absurd following this event.
