Since his debut in 1954, Godzilla has become the most famous and formidable monster of all time. Originally created as a symbol of the dangers of nuclear weapons, Godzilla is a massively powerful and almost impossible-to-stop force of destruction. Towering over 15 stories, able to heal almost instantly, and wielding a devastating Atomic Breath capable of planet-level destruction, he’s rightfully known as the King of the Monsters. But even Godzilla would face challenges if he rampaged through the DC or Marvel universes, as several superheroes possess the abilities needed to halt his destruction and protect their worlds.
Godzilla has been reimagined many times over the years, but most versions share common traits. Typically, he’s depicted as a giant, walking nuclear reactor with incredible healing abilities – even able to recover from being broken down into tiny particles. However, even classic Godzilla has limitations. He’s relatively slow and not very intelligent, and his destructive power, while immense, is limited to planetary and black hole-level threats. Complete atomic vaporization is one thing he can’t recover from. While incredibly powerful, a few superheroes are capable of defeating him. This assessment excludes crossover comic books, which often change characters’ powers for the sake of the story.
7) Thor
While Godzilla is famous as a massive monster, he’d likely be just another challenge for Thor. As the God of Thunder, Thor has centuries of experience battling giant creatures – he’s even consistently defeated Jormungandr, a serpent large and powerful enough to wrap around the world multiple times. Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, would allow him to withstand Godzilla’s atomic breath, and his incredible strength far surpasses Godzilla’s. Thor can unleash universe-shaking blasts and even overpower machines holding the infinite World Tree. It would be a fierce fight, but ultimately, Thor would defeat Godzilla and banish him from all the realms.
6) Hulk
Godzilla isn’t the only powerful, radiation-fueled monster. The Hulk, powered by gamma radiation, is incredibly strong, heals rapidly, and can even come back to life. What’s more, the Hulk can actually absorb radiation, meaning Godzilla’s atomic breath would only make him stronger. The Hulk’s strength far surpasses Godzilla’s – he’s capable of destroying universes and creating dimensional shockwaves. Even if Godzilla’s healing abilities could withstand the Hulk’s attacks, Bruce Banner, the Hulk’s human alter ego, is a brilliant scientist who could use his knowledge of radiation to weaken Godzilla. Since scientists have found ways to defeat Godzilla before, the combination of the Hulk’s immense power and Bruce Banner’s intelligence would likely be too much for the giant monster.
5) Doctor Fate
Godzilla isn’t used to fighting magic, but Doctor Fate is DC Comics’ top sorcerer. By wearing the Helmet of Fate, Doctor Fate taps into the power of Nabu, an incredibly powerful ancient being, allowing him to perform amazing feats of magic. He can change matter, teleport, create illusions, become invisible, control time, and much more. Doctor Fate is also very experienced in fighting powerful monsters and gods – he’s even prevented universal destruction, while Godzilla has only survived extreme events like black holes. Plus, Doctor Fate could easily teleport Godzilla to a place where he could never cause harm again.
4) Superman
As a huge movie buff, I’ve definitely thought about this matchup: Superman versus Godzilla. Honestly, I think Superman would win, and it wouldn’t even be that close. Sure, radiation can hurt him, but his speed is just insane – he could easily avoid Godzilla’s atomic breath and land some seriously devastating punches before Godzilla even reacts. Plus, Superman’s heat vision is capable of destroying entire planets, so he could definitely go toe-to-toe with the atomic breath in terms of sheer power. But really, it’s Superman’s strength that seals the deal. We’re talking about a guy who’s defeated gods, broken multiverses, and lifted things that weigh… well, everything! Godzilla’s strong, no doubt, but it’s not even in the same league.
3) Captain Atom
While Superman is incredibly strong, Captain Atom has powers that are a much better match for fighting Godzilla. Captain Atom isn’t always used to his full potential, but he contains a massive amount of energy within his suit. He draws power from the Quantum Field, allowing him to absorb and control all kinds of energy, even radiation. This means Captain Atom could easily block or deflect Godzilla’s most powerful attacks, and even weaken him by draining his radioactive energy. He can also change matter itself, and theoretically even destroy and recreate the universe. With that level of power, Captain Atom could completely obliterate Godzilla.
2) Jean Grey
Jean Grey, much like Godzilla, possesses immense destructive power thanks to her connection with the Phoenix Force. However, the Phoenix Force is far more powerful than anything Godzilla can achieve. Godzilla can destroy planets, but Jean, with the Phoenix Force, can create and destroy entire universes, and even endanger the entire multiverse. Unlike Godzilla, Jean can resurrect herself even if her physical body is destroyed. While Godzilla is resistant to mental and spiritual attacks, he wouldn’t be able to withstand Jean’s ability to warp reality. Furthermore, Jean has already defeated countless powerful beings across the multiverse, meaning Godzilla wouldn’t be able to recover from a similar attack.
1) Scarlet Witch
Scarlet Witch is one of the most powerful characters in fiction, capable of wielding Chaos Magic that few can resist. As a central point for all magic in the universe, she’s a serious threat to everything that exists. Even with all of Godzilla’s weapons and strength, he wouldn’t stand a chance against her. While she isn’t physically strong, her incredibly diverse and powerful magic can stop any attack. She’s demonstrated the ability to change reality itself, move planets, create entire universes, and even alter the genetic makeup of species. Scarlet Witch could simply erase Godzilla from existence with a thought.
