It’s surprising that “Superman” serves as the foundation for a series, given that in this film, Superman is well-established as a seasoned superhero, having been active for three years in Metropolis. The opening scene of “Superman” also unveils that metahumans have been present and active in the DC Universe for 300 years. This explains why people are not taken aback when faced with threats like giant monsters or winged girls who swoop in to save them. It’s a pleasant change of pace not to be burdened by an origin story, as the focus is solely on the unfolding narrative and not on past events.
One significant challenge that arises with regards to Superman is the numerous connections that need to be made. Given that many of the film’s characters already have established relationships, there isn’t much dialogue dedicated to their personal stories or motivations. This results in viewers having trouble finding solutions to critical questions, as it can feel like some crucial information is left unsaid. Needless to say, spoilers for Superman follow below.
1) How Did Lois Lane Find Out Clark Kent Was Superman?
At the beginning of Superman, Lois Lane and Clark Kent are hiding a clandestine romance from everyone. Although they keep their relationship hidden, it’s evident that they have an unwavering trust in each other, as she is privy to his superhero identity. However, the film doesn’t offer any explanation for why Clark reveals his secret to Lois, resulting in a love story that feels somewhat unresolved.
2) What’s the Deal With Baby Joey?
In a different version of events: Superman isn’t troubled by his confinement within Lex Luthor’s unique pocket dimension prison until he encounters Metamorpho, who seems to conjure kryptonite at will. Luthor is leveraging this shape-shifting hero by capturing his son, Joey, as a pawn. Although Superman manages to free the young boy, the father remains tight-lipped about himself. Given Metamorpho’s compelling history in the comics, it would be intriguing to see this portrayed on the big screen.
3) Why Is Maxwell Lord Bankrolling Superheroes?
The other characters who feature in the Superman story are members of the Justice League. Maxwell Lord assembles this team, although he doesn’t make an appearance until towards the end of the film, taking a swipe at Lex Luthor when all the villains’ secrets are exposed. However, it’s important to note that Maxwell Lord is not portrayed as a good character in the original material, suggesting he may have hidden intentions for recruiting heroes such as Green Lantern and Mister Terrific into the DC Universe.
4) When Did Supergirl Arrive on Earth?
Following Lex’s imprisonment and the security of Metropolis being restored, Superman returns to the Fortress of Solitude for some well-deserved relaxation. However, his peaceful solitude is short-lived as his cousin Kara Zor-El arrives to fetch Krypto. The two superheroes exchange minimal words, leaving the details of Supergirl’s past and her current position on Earth a puzzle.
5) Does Supergirl Know About Jor-El and Lara-El’s Plan?
The most significant plot turn in Superman revolves around the message Jor-El and Lara-El entrusted to their son before sending him to Earth. At first, he assumes they want him to become a hero and protect the planet, but Lex Luthor eventually discovers Jor-El’s last words, revealing that their true mission was conquest. As for Supergirl, she doesn’t disclose her family’s dark secret, but there’s a possibility her standalone film will delve into her emotional journey surrounding it.
6) Which Version of Peacemaker Is on TV?
In the television series Superman, it’s not just Supergirl who makes an appearance; Peacemaker, played by Christopher Smith, also pops up on a TV program for a brief spell. It’s no shock that he isn’t a fan of Superman, given the turn of events in Season 1 of Peacemaker. However, the Superman encountered by Chris in his standalone show is from the DC Extended Universe. The upcoming Season 2 of Peacemaker will need to shed light on which version of the anti-hero titled character is roaming around in the DCU.
7) Does Jimmy Olsen Know Clark Kent Is Superman?
Although Lois Lane and Clark Kent have been trying to hide their relationship from their colleagues, Jimmy Olsen has figured out that she’s spending time with Superman. He’s told Perry White that they’ve been an item for several months, but it’s uncertain if he understands the entire situation. It’s possible that he realizes his friend is a superhero and is choosing not to disclose this information to his boss.
Superman is in theaters now.
