The Avengers united Marvel’s most powerful heroes, following a similar model to teams like the Justice Society, the Allies, and the Justice League, to combat Earth’s biggest dangers. Known as “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,” they’ve consistently overcome incredibly dangerous threats, making them the strongest team in the Marvel Universe. Their roster is so impressive that it’s difficult for any villain to stand a chance, and over time, many have fallen to the team – sometimes in surprisingly quick defeats.
The Avengers consistently battle incredibly powerful villains, often finding themselves outmatched. Despite facing overwhelming odds and enemies stronger than themselves, they still manage to win. Here are seven of Marvel’s most powerful villains who have challenged the team – and lost.
7) Michael Korvac

Michael Korvac originated from the 30th century and was once enslaved by the Badoons. He later developed incredible, god-like powers and clashed with the future Guardians of the Galaxy, ultimately traveling back in time. There, he swiftly defeated a combined team of the Guardians and the Avengers. Though they were later brought back to life, they eventually managed to overcome him. Korvac has repeatedly returned as a powerful cosmic threat, consistently proving to be a formidable opponent. However, the team has always been able to use strategy and teamwork to defeat him.
6) Count Nefaria

The Avengers have battled many powerful foes, but some lesser-known villains, like Count Nefaria, deserve more recognition. Nefaria was a leader in a superpowered criminal organization similar to the mafia. He eventually gained incredible abilities – immense strength, durability, flight, and control over ionic energy. In Avengers (Vol. 1) #165-166, he decisively defeated a particularly strong Avengers team led by Captain America, which included heroes like Thor, Wonder Man, Iron Man, and Ms. Marvel. While the Avengers ultimately won, Nefaria proved to be a formidable opponent, even against one of their most capable lineups.
5) Kang

People underestimate Kang’s strength. He’s dedicated years to becoming more powerful, gathering advanced technology, and traveling across different universes, where he’s defeated countless heroes as preparation for facing Earth’s heroes. He’s incredibly skilled and strong enough to defeat them whenever he wants, but thankfully, his sense of honor gives them a chance. He earned the title ‘the Conqueror’ for a reason – he’s beaten them multiple times, though they’ve always managed to win in the end.
4) The Hulk

The Hulk is incredibly powerful – arguably the strongest being ever – and has frequently clashed with the Avengers. Despite being one of the team’s original members, he’s spent more time as an opponent than as a teammate. His strength is limitless, and he’s virtually indestructible; he’s even broken Thor’s skull, a feat few, if any, others have accomplished. He easily overpowers heroes like Iron Man, and even Captain Marvel’s immense power isn’t enough to defeat him. While the Avengers have managed to beat the Hulk on occasion, it’s far from a guaranteed victory.
3) Ultron

It’s debatable whether Ultron is stronger than the Avengers. While individual Avengers like Thor might have moments of greater strength, Ultron’s diverse weaponry and incredibly durable adamantium body give him a significant edge. We’ve even seen possible futures where Ultron defeats the Avengers after upgrading himself, and he’s proven capable of overwhelming powerful forces like the entire Phalanx race, even taking control of them. Combining this with his brilliant, yet twisted, intelligence, Ultron is arguably more powerful overall – the Avengers just know how to exploit his weaknesses.
2) The Builders

Jonathan Hickman’s run on Avengers was a standout, largely thanks to the compelling villains introduced early on: the Builders. This ancient race wasn’t just old; they were responsible for spreading life throughout the universe and even built pathways to other dimensions. They had powerful creations like Ex Nihilos, the Abyss, the Alephs, and the Engineers working for them, making them a truly powerful threat. The Builders decided to wipe out all life with something called the Incursions, but the Avengers managed to stop them – though they needed the combined power of every alien fleet in the universe to do it. It was a close call, but Earth’s heroes ultimately saved everything.
1) Thanos

Thanos is considered the most terrifying being in the universe, even surpassing the powerful Galactus. This incredibly dangerous villain is an Eternal from the planet Titan, possessing typical cosmic abilities like immense strength, durability, and energy manipulation. Over time, however, Thanos has dramatically increased his power through years of destructive conquests across the stars. He’s single-handedly defeated gods and other cosmic entities, and can even overpower Thor – even when Thor is at his most powerful with warrior’s madness and wielding the Power Stone – without relying on his signature, godlike weaponry. While undeniably one of the universe’s strongest villains, Thanos has been defeated by the Avengers on multiple occasions.
