Symbiotes first appeared in Marvel Comics during the Secret Wars storyline, but their true nature wasn’t immediately clear. The very first symbiote was the one that would become Venom. It initially appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #252 as a strange black costume worn by Spider-Man. Secret Wars later revealed its origins: Spider-Man’s costume was damaged, and he unknowingly bonded with the alien lifeform when it appeared as a new black costume from a mysterious machine. Three years after its debut, the symbiote was officially named Venom and bonded with Eddie Brock, paving the way for the arrival of other symbiotes.
Venom is the most well-known symbiote, starring in Spider-Man films and his own movies. While characters like Riot and Carnage have also made it to the big screen, many other symbiotes from the comics are just too strange to ever appear in a Marvel movie.
7) Mania

Mania’s story is complex and needed a lot of setup before she could appear in a Marvel movie. She was a student of Flash Thompson, who was secretly working as the government agent Agent Venom. When she was attacked by Jack O’Lantern, Flash, in his Agent Venom persona, protected her, which led to her bonding with a new symbiote. This symbiote is unique because Venom previously made a deal with Mephisto while in Hell, giving it the power to control demons and unleash hellfire. This makes Mania potentially the first symbiote host with her own demonic army.
6) Venom-Red Hulk-Ghost Rider

One of the strangest and most complicated symbiotes in Marvel Comics appeared in a storyline where Venom found himself in Hell. This event ultimately led to the creation of Mania. Several other characters also died and ended up in Hell, where they all made deals with Mephisto. Mephisto’s son, Blackheart, killed them, but allowed them to escape after their agreements. In a surprising turn, Venom transferred its symbiote to Red Hulk, who was also possessed by the Spirit of Vengeance, resulting in a unique Venom-Red Hulk-Ghost Rider combination. Despite being a cool concept, this hybrid is unlikely to ever appear in a movie.
5) Ultimate Carnage

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has drawn many characters from the Ultimate Comics line. Nick Fury, for example, originated in the Ultimate Universe, which led Marvel to introduce a similar version of the character into their main Earth-616 storyline. Hawkeye also had roots in the Ultimate Universe. However, the Ultimate Universe’s take on Venom doesn’t really fit with the existing Venom stories. The Ultimate version of Venom was incredibly dark and frightening, and Ultimate Carnage was almost as terrifying. This Venom was a monstrous creation – a symbiote originally made by Curt Conners that broke free and fed on people to survive, becoming a truly horrifying creature.
4) Raze

Mania isn’t the only symbiote with connections to demons; Raze also possesses demonic powers. Raze’s origins trace back to Carnage and a powerful demonic book called the Darkhold. She began as Clarie Dixon, an FBI agent tasked with capturing Carnage. However, a mistake during the pursuit led to Carnage becoming linked with the Darkhold, which then bonded with Claire, transforming her into Raze. Though initially mind-controlled and monstrous, Claire briefly regained control and heroically sacrificed herself to imprison the demon Chthon, saving the world.
3) Ultimate Venom

Similar to what happened with Ultimate Carnage, the Ultimate Universe reimagined symbiotes completely. Instead of being aliens that attach to people, this universe’s symbiote was originally a special suit created by Peter Parker’s father, Richard, and Eddie Brock’s father, Eddie Sr., designed to enhance the wearer’s physical abilities. However, the suit also caused intense anger and rage in whoever wore it. It eventually bonded with Peter Parker, then Eddie Brock, and finally Conrad Marcus. This version of Venom was a terrifying monster, and it tragically killed Miles Morales’s father, Jefferson Davis, before Miles was able to defeat it.
2) T-Rex Venom

A Venom-infused horse appeared in Venom: The Last Dance, so a dinosaur version isn’t impossible – perhaps through time travel or the introduction of a place like the Savage Land. However, it’s unlikely we’ll see that with Venom in the movies. A T-Rex symbiote did appear in Old Man Logan, and it was a frightening, though somewhat ridiculous, creation. The dinosaur chased Old Man Logan and Hawkeye before being defeated by Black Bolt. While it was a cool and bizarre symbiote, it wouldn’t really fit in a standard Marvel film.
1) Jeff the Land Shark

It’s unlikely we’ll ever see this particular symbiote in a Marvel movie because it’s tied to Jeff the Land Shark, a character who’s probably limited to animated projects. Jeff, created by MODOK and looked after by heroes like Gwenpool and Deadpool, is a kind and protective character. He also happens to have his own symbiote, which usually stays hidden in his closet. While Jeff has bonded with it before, he generally keeps it contained and doesn’t use it often.
