The Hulk often claims to be the strongest being around, but several X-Men are powerful enough to challenge him – and potentially win. While they wouldn’t win every time, or even most of the time, many mutants possess abilities that could counter the Hulk’s strength and give them a fighting chance. In fact, some mutants have actually defeated the Hulk in comic book storylines.
Whether they wield cosmic abilities, magic, or even first appeared in The Incredible Hulk comic, here are seven mutants strong enough to defeat the Hulk.
7) Kitty Pryde

While it sounds unbelievable, Kitty Pryde could actually defeat the Hulk with precise timing. She wouldn’t stand a chance in a direct physical fight, but her ability to phase makes her untouchable. Kitty has become so skilled with phasing that she can use it offensively – she once phased her hand into someone’s skull and solidified it, immediately incapacitating them. She could repeat this with the Hulk, phasing into his brain or heart to instantly defeat him.
6) Magik

Magik’s standard mutant abilities aren’t strong enough to defeat the Hulk, as they primarily allow her to teleport. While she could potentially use this to quickly move the Hulk to another dimension and avoid a fight, her true power as the Sorcerer Supreme of Limbo offers a more decisive solution. If Magik can transport the Hulk to Limbo, she would have a significant advantage, as she’s the most powerful magic user there and virtually unbeatable. The Hulk would certainly put up a fight, but Magik could overpower him in her own realm. Alternatively, she could instantly end the battle by teleporting him into the sun.
5) Storm

Storm, similar to Magik, possesses abilities beyond those of a typical mutant. She has god-like powers, with a hint of magic as well. Among all mutants, Storm is one of the strongest, and arguably the most powerful female X-Man after Jean Grey. Her mutant ability allows her complete control over the weather, making her a uniquely powerful Omega-level mutant. In a fight against the Hulk, Storm would need to quickly disable him, as his strength increases with his anger.
4) Rogue

Rogue is a formidable Marvel character because she can absorb the powers of anyone she touches, along with their memories and even their consciousness. While she could potentially gain all of Hulk’s strength by touching him – and even weaken him in the process – it’s risky. Hulk’s traumatic past could overwhelm Rogue’s mind if she absorbed too much of it. However, if she managed to absorb his power without being mentally broken, she could stand a chance against him. Another strategy for Rogue would be to absorb the powers of her X-Men teammates and launch a powerful, preemptive attack before Hulk could react.
3) Professor X

Professor X could defeat the Hulk before the fight truly begins. While Charles Xavier is the most powerful psychic on Earth, there’s another who could also subdue the Hulk. Professor X usually restrains his abilities due to their potential danger and his strong ethical code regarding mind control. However, he possesses the power to instantly incapacitate the Hulk mentally, without any physical contact. Although the Hulk’s intense rage can sometimes create a psychic defense, a swift and powerful mental assault from Professor X – potentially reverting him back to Bruce Banner – would likely result in a quick victory.
2) Jean Grey

Jean Grey is arguably the most powerful being in the Marvel Universe. While she’s faced death and resurrection numerous times, at full power, she’s nearly unstoppable. As the strongest psychic around, she could easily defeat someone like the Hulk by attacking his mind, similar to Professor X. But her true power lies in the Phoenix Force, which is capable of completely destroying the Hulk, or at least incapacitating him for a very long time, even with his incredible healing ability.
1) Wolverine

Wolverine first appeared in Marvel Comics’ The Incredible Hulk #181, initially tasked by the Canadian government to capture the Hulk after he crossed the border. During that mission, he also battled the Wendigo. Over the years, Wolverine became one of the Hulk’s most frequent and determined opponents, fighting him more often than almost any other hero. However, the story Old Man Logan reveals a particularly brutal way Wolverine defeated the Hulk: the Hulk devoured Wolverine, but Logan then violently fought his way out from inside, ultimately killing him.
