The X-Men movies brought many comic book favorites to life on the big screen, though some actor choices worked better than others. Starting with Bryan Singer’s X-Men film 25 years ago, the partnership between Marvel and 20th Century Fox created 12 movies, finishing with The New Mutants in 2020. Now that Disney owns the movie and TV rights to the X-Men, the Marvel Cinematic Universe plans to introduce new versions of these popular characters in its upcoming Phase 7. Before the MCU reboots the franchise, it’s worth remembering the best performances from the Fox films. From Professor X to Wolverine, the X-Men movies featured beloved characters brought to life by talented actors.
The following seven Marvel X-Men performances are the most perfect castings in the movie franchise.
7) Nicholas Hoult as Beast
Nicholas Hoult first played Hank McCoy, also known as Beast, in the 2011 film X-Men: First Class. He went on to reprise the role in three more X-Men movies, making Beast a memorable character in the series. Beast is unique because he can change between his human form and a blue, clawed creature. Hoult skillfully showed both Hank’s intelligence and his fighting abilities. Throughout the X-Men films, Beast transforms from a shy scientist embarrassed by his powers into a self-assured hero, and Hoult’s strong performance perfectly captured this evolution, making him a great choice for the part.
6) Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler
Alan Cumming quickly became a fan favorite as Nightcrawler in the X-Men movies, even though he wasn’t in them a lot. He first appeared in X2: X-Men United (2003) and immediately captured audiences with his portrayal of the character’s unsettling and playful personality. While Nightcrawler initially seems like a villain, Cumming skillfully reveals his kind heart. He’s intimidating to his enemies but endearing to his fellow X-Men, making his scenes consistently engaging. Cumming’s performance as Nightcrawler is often overlooked, but it’s a standout in the X-Men universe, and fans are eager to see him return to the role in Avengers: Doomsday.
5) Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique
As a huge movie fan, I always thought Jennifer Lawrence was a truly gifted actress, and she absolutely nailed the role of Mystique, or Raven Darkholme. It’s such a compelling character, caught between the human and mutant worlds, and her story arc, starting in X-Men: First Class and ending with that really sad moment in X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019), is just fantastic. What I loved was how Lawrence showed all the layers of Raven as she came to terms with who she was and her powers. She really brought something special to Raven’s relationships with both Charles Xavier – like a brother to her – and Magneto, making her feel so real and vulnerable despite being a shapeshifter. Seeing Raven grow from someone unsure of herself into this strong, caring hero was incredibly moving, and it’s a testament to Lawrence’s talent – Mystique needed an actress of her caliber to really make the role shine.
4) Patrick Stewart as Professor X
Patrick Stewart’s portrayal of Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X, in the X-Men films is widely considered a fantastic interpretation of the comic book character. As the founder and leader of the X-Men, Professor X is central to the plot of several movies, including X-Men, X2, and X-Men: The Last Stand. Stewart skillfully captures Charles’s inherent compassion and empathy, while also conveying his strong desire to create a more peaceful future for both mutants and humans. In contrast to the more aggressive approach of Ian McKellen’s Magneto, Stewart’s Professor X is consistently portrayed as thoughtful and engaging, and his performance helped elevate the comic book icon to a beloved film character.
3) James McAvoy as Professor X
James McAvoy immediately established himself as the perfect choice to play a young Charles Xavier. He first appeared as the character in X-Men: First Class, brilliantly showing Charles’s development into Professor X. McAvoy’s performance provides a deep understanding of Charles’s inner world, especially through his connections with other mutants like Mystique and Magneto. He continued to deliver a fantastic portrayal of Charles in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), and X-Men: Dark Phoenix, showcasing the many difficulties Charles faces as the leader of the X-Men.
James McAvoy is captivating as the young Professor X because he brilliantly portrays the character’s optimism and strong will, especially when facing challenges. McAvoy expertly shows how Charles Xavier is affected by events like becoming paralyzed and the loneliness that follows, convincingly depicting his evolution throughout the films.
2) Hugh Jackman as Wolverine
Hugh Jackman is a true Marvel icon, having played Logan/Wolverine in nine movies. His first appearance as the character in X-Men launched his film career, and he’s been fantastic in the role ever since. Jackman perfectly captures both Logan’s tough fighting skills and his hidden vulnerability.
Hugh Jackman’s subtle and realistic portrayal makes Wolverine’s internal struggles – dealing with a troubled past and protecting those he cares about – feel completely genuine. We see Wolverine evolve from a lost and gifted mutant into a seasoned and incredibly strong member of the X-Men. It’s hard to picture anyone else in the role; Jackman truly embodies the character.
1) Michael Fassbender as Magneto
Michael Fassbender consistently delivers captivating performances, and his portrayal of Erik Lensherr, also known as Magneto, is arguably the best choice the X-Men film series ever made. Throughout the films, from X-Men: First Class to X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Fassbender skillfully shows the complex inner struggles, past trauma, and anger that drive Erik, stemming from the mistreatment he’s experienced. He plays Magneto as a character you sympathize with, despite his power, making him more nuanced than the older, more villainous version portrayed by Ian McKellen.
Let me tell you, Michael Fassbender is Magneto. Even with some questionable choices in how he tries to help mutants, you completely understand where he’s coming from, and Fassbender conveys that conviction brilliantly. The scenes between him and Professor X are electric, and his connection with Mystique is genuinely moving – Fassbender absolutely kills it in every single one. He walks this amazing line between Erik’s anger and his underlying humanity. Look, Magneto was already a beloved character, but Fassbender’s performance didn’t just meet expectations, it blew them away.
