7 X-Men Who Died and Came Back to Life

The X-Men have fought in incredibly dangerous conflicts, facing enemies capable of destroying the entire universe. They’ve battled everything from powerful robots and diverse groups of mutants to magical creatures, cosmic entities, and formidable alien civilizations. While the X-Men usually win, these victories often come at a great cost. Over the years, many team members have tragically fallen in battle. But in the Marvel Universe, death isn’t permanent for mutants; they often find a way to return.

Throughout the team’s history, several key members have seemingly died in dramatic fashion, causing significant shifts within the group. However, they’ve all eventually returned. These seven X-Men have each faced death and lived to share their experiences.

7) Magik

Illyana Rasputin, the youngest of the Rasputin family, was taken to a dimension called Limbo as a child. She spent years there learning magic, fighting demons, and perfecting her teleportation abilities before unexpectedly returning. She was a founding member of the New Mutants, but after a major event called “Inferno,” she aged normally. Sadly, she later succumbed to the Legacy Virus. However, years after her death, she reappeared in a demonic form, and her old New Mutants teammates were able to rescue her.

6) Colossus

Colossus, the X-Men’s strongest member, was like a brother figure to the team – a powerful fighter with a gentle heart. Despite seeming invincible, Piotr Rasputin faced immense tragedy. The death of his sister deeply affected him, leading him to briefly join Magneto’s followers after Xavier temporarily erased Magneto’s memories. Even after returning to the Xavier Institute, Colossus continued to struggle, especially with the reappearance of his brother, Mikhail. Ultimately, he sacrificed himself to destroy the Legacy Virus, the same disease that took his sister’s life. But his story didn’t end there; his body was taken and held captive for years by an alien warlord named Ord, who experimented on him, before eventually resurrecting him.

5) Nightcrawler

Nightcrawler is a fan-favorite X-Man, known as a quirky but deeply thoughtful brother figure to the team. His Catholic faith played a significant role in his life, and he always embraced living to the fullest. He’s a true hero, willing to sacrifice everything to do what’s right. He famously saved Hope Summers from Bastion and his Sentinels, teleporting between them and delivering the final blow. Even after his death, the X-Men went to extraordinary lengths to bring him back, and he has faced death multiple times, particularly during the events of A.X.E. Judgment Day, but was consistently resurrected thanks to the mutant nation of Krakoa.

4) Professor X

Professor X has experienced death and rebirth repeatedly throughout his long life. Long before the current era, Charles Xavier both died and pretended to die multiple times, even having his consciousness transferred to a cloned body. He’s been killed in action – once by his son, Cyclops, while possessed by the Dark Phoenix – and brought back to life through astral manipulation, even inhabiting the body of Fantomex. During the Krakoa era, he’s faced assassination by XENO, death at the hands of Nimrod, and murder by Mister Sinister, but always manages to return by transferring his mind into new bodies – a process he’s been using for years.

3) Cyclops

Cyclops is the X-Men’s strongest leader, consistently guiding his team to safety through even the toughest battles. A highly skilled fighter, he effectively combines his powerful optic blasts with martial arts expertise. Though incredibly resilient, Cyclops has faced death multiple times. He was once controlled and killed by Apocalypse before returning, and later died from M-Pox, being revived by a young Cable. More recently, during the Krakoa era, he has died several times but was always brought back to life through Krakoa’s resurrection process.

2) Wolverine

Wolverine is arguably the most well-known member of the X-Men, and he’s famously died numerous times throughout his history. He’s been killed by various enemies – like the alien Haven, and even Gorgon – only to be brought back to life, sometimes with enhanced powers. Even before gaining his adamantium skeleton, Wolverine died repeatedly, constantly being revived by his healing ability, and once even argued with the Angel of Death to return. He was once reduced to a skeleton by Nitro, and at another point, lost his healing factor and was melted down in adamantium, before being resurrected by a mutant named Persephone. (It’s best to skip the Death of Wolverine and Return of Wolverine comics unless you can find them for free – you’ll thank me later!). More recently, he’s died multiple times during the events on Krakoa.

1) Jean Grey

Jean Grey has experienced death multiple times, starting with the iconic “Dark Phoenix Saga.” Her journey back from death has been complex and frequent. She was once discovered in a cocoon and later returned to fight for mutant rights. One notable incident involved her transferring her consciousness into Emma Frost’s body after a devastating attack, before eventually returning to her own. She’s been killed by Xorn, resurrected by the Phoenix Force, and faced several significant deaths during the Krakoa era, making her relationship with mortality a central part of her story.
