Seven years ago, the sci-fi film Alita: Battle Angel came out – and a sequel might finally be happening. Released on February 14, 2019, the movie was a joint effort between director Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron. Based on the Japanese manga Battle Angel Alita by Yukito Kishiro, it follows Alita, a cyborg who wakes up with no memories. She’s rebuilt and cared for by a cybernetic doctor, and the story follows her journey as she rediscovers her past.
Rosa Salazar plays Alita in the film, and Christoph Waltz plays Dyson Ido, the doctor who raises her. Director Robert Rodriguez brought his unique, hands-on approach to the movie, resulting in stunning visual effects. It’s considered one of the most visually impressive sci-fi action films of its time, and the story, co-written by James Cameron, was compelling enough to leave audiences wanting more. The ending even teased a potential sequel, introducing Edward Norton as the main villain for future installments.
What We Know About the Alita: Battle Angel Sequel

I’ve been really hoping for a sequel to Alita: Battle Angel, but it’s been stuck in development for a while now. From what I understand, the biggest hold-up is James Cameron – he’s been completely focused on making the Avatar films, and that’s taken all his attention. Robert Rodriguez, the director of the first movie, has said he’s eager to come back, but he’s been waiting for Cameron to have time to work on it with him. It just hasn’t been able to get going. And while we’ve been waiting, Rodriguez has actually directed four other films, his latest one coming out just last year.
It’s a letdown that plans for multiple sequels seemed to stall, especially since Edward Norton, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jai Courtney made appearances that suggested more films were coming. However, there’s good news: James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez confirmed in 2025 they’re writing a script for Alita 2 and are committed to making it happen. Cameron stated they plan to make at least one more Alita movie, and potentially a third, depending on how the sequel performs.
James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez have expressed interest in making a sequel to Alita: Battle Angel for seven years, but Cameron’s ongoing work on the Avatar films may make it difficult to find the time. Fortunately, both filmmakers are planning to be based in Austin, Texas, which could create an opportunity to collaborate. This is exciting news for fans, and if a sequel is made, it has the potential to be as good as the first movie, making the wait worthwhile.
