7 Years Ago Today, We Met Sony’s Best Version of Spider-Man (& We Want Him to Join the MCU)

It’s been seven years since we first saw this popular version of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and fans are still hoping he’ll appear in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although Sony’s attempt to build its own shared universe of Marvel characters hasn’t quite worked out – ironically, it didn’t include Spider-Man – one part has been a huge hit: the animated Spider-Verse films. This franchise has brought us many different Spider-Men from alternate realities, and one version is particularly memorable.

Released on December 14, 2018, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse quickly stood out as a visually stunning and innovative animated film. Shameik Moore’s voice acting as Miles Morales—a teenager who becomes Spider-Man after a tragic event and a unique spider bite—was highly praised and made the character incredibly popular with fans. There have been hints that Miles Morales will soon join the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, and with the Spider-Verse series wrapping up, many are anticipating his official introduction.

How Miles Morales’ Spider-Man Can Fit Into the MCU Proper

Although the Miles Morales we know from the animated Spider-Verse films probably won’t be joining the main Marvel Cinematic Universe after the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, another version of the character could appear. Shameik Moore’s Miles is now a teenager who’s been on a huge adventure with the Spider Society and is currently facing off against a version of himself, the Prowler, on Earth 42. Beyond the Spider-Verse will conclude this particular Miles Morales’ story arc, but Marvel has already hinted at introducing a new Spider-Man into the MCU.

I remember when Tom Holland first swung into action as Spider-Man in Homecoming, and I was so excited to see Aaron Davis appear! As a comic book fan, I instantly recognized him as Miles Morales’ uncle, and it felt like a clear hint that Miles would eventually join the MCU. Although Donald Glover hasn’t been back as Aaron Davis in the main MCU movies, it was awesome to see him voice the Prowler in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Even cooler, some of the concept art labelled him as ‘MCU Prowler,’ which makes me think we’re getting closer and closer to seeing Miles Morales and the Prowler officially debut in the universe!

Tom Holland is expected to reprise his role as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, slated for release in 2026, potentially kicking off a new Spider-Man trilogy. While Holland has hinted he might not appear in many more Spider-Man films, many fans hope Miles Morales will be introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a successor. The two Spider-Men famously teamed up in the 2015 Secret Wars comic book event, making the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars movies ideal opportunities to introduce Miles in live-action, following his popularity in animated form.
