I still think about Immortal Hulk seven years later – it truly felt like a modern masterpiece. What I loved most was seeing the Hulk return to his classic roots, but with this incredible twist: he just kept coming back, no matter what. It’s easily one of the best Hulk stories ever told, and I already see its influence everywhere – it’s become a standard that future stories will be measured against. After seeing how brilliantly Marvel revitalized the Hulk, I’m really hoping they bring that same magic to some of their other characters soon!
Al Ewing’s Immortal Thor and Mortal Thor continue his trend of reimagining classic characters, and they deliver on that promise. However, what many other Marvel heroes really need isn’t an ‘Immortal’ series of their own, but a comic similar to Immortal Hulk. Characters like Spider-Man and the X-Men would greatly benefit from a story that both refreshes them and highlights what makes them great. Every Marvel hero deserves that kind of impactful story, and here’s why.
What Immortal Hulk Did For the Hulk

To understand why Marvel should create more stories like Immortal Hulk, it’s important to look at how it revitalized the Hulk character. The comic offered a completely fresh take on the Hulk, unlike anything fans had seen before. It was a long, ambitious story with clear themes, skillfully blending the Hulk’s established scientific origins with the more mystical elements of the Marvel Universe. This clever approach not only broadened the character’s potential but also opened up exciting new storytelling avenues for future Hulk adventures and beyond.
Beyond the action, Immortal Hulk revitalized the character by drawing on every previous version of the Hulk and weaving them into a unified whole. The comic skillfully balanced rewarding longtime fans with accessible storytelling for new readers. Importantly, it returned the Hulk to his origins as a horror character, prompting a deeper exploration of why he’s frightening. This focus on the core identities of both Hulk and Bruce Banner allowed the story to forge a compelling new direction for the character. Ultimately, Immortal Hulk was a fresh and imaginative take that honored the Hulk’s history and redefined what the character represents.
What Immortal Comics For Other Characters Could Do

What made the Immortal Hulk comic so good was its thoughtful and complex storytelling. It boldly reimagined the character while still honoring his core identity. The story treated its characters and readers with respect, avoiding condescension. This kind of mature, character-focused approach is what many other Marvel heroes need. For example, imagine a Spider-Man comic that deeply explored Peter Parker’s personality and took him in a completely new direction. It would be a serious take on the character, but wouldn’t lose Spider-Man’s trademark humor – instead, it would use that humor to reveal even more about him.
This comic has the potential to weave together different parts of Spider-Man’s history, including his beginnings in science and the mystical Web of Life and Destiny. It could explore what being responsible truly means for Spider-Man and set a new course for the character in comics for years to come, offering fresh ideas for other writers. While we don’t need a story that copies Immortal Hulk – that approach only worked for that specific character – we do need stories that are equally sophisticated and celebrate Spider-Man’s established history while also creating something original. Stories with that kind of impact can define a character for years, and every truly great character needs a clear and compelling direction.
