I’ve noticed anime gaining a lot more recognition worldwide, and it’s fantastic to see. For years, Western audiences often overlooked it, but now people are appreciating the amazing animation, compelling characters, and stories that aren’t afraid to break the mold. While the quality of the storytelling is finally getting its due, I don’t think we can forget what initially drew so many of us in: the action. Anime battles are truly something special – the dramatic speeches, the way characters’ power levels are constantly measured, and the exciting team-ups all build incredible anticipation. It’s a unique experience that sets anime apart.
Anime battles often feature incredible powers, but many exciting fights center around skillful swordplay. However, there’s a group of fighters who don’t get as much recognition despite adding a lot of personality to their scenes: gunslingers. They often work behind the scenes, but when they take center stage, they truly shine. This list celebrates some of the most impressive gunfighters in anime, highlighting the skill and captivating presence they bring to their battles.
8) Mista Guido (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)
Mista Guido is a character first appearing in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, the fifth season of the popular anime series known for its references to pop culture. This season focuses on gangsters, the Italian Mafia, and stopping a profitable drug operation, all presented with the colorful and unusual style typical of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Mista is a member of Passione, a powerful and well-known Italian gang with many members who possess special abilities.
Guido Mista is a member of Bucciarati’s team, assigned to protect Trish Una. He appears to be a typical teenager who enjoys girls, magazines, and having fun, giving off a relaxed vibe. However, Mista is surprisingly aggressive and quick to fight, even over small things, and always follows orders without question. What truly sets him apart is his Stand, Sex Pistols, which allows him to control the trajectory of bullets fired from his gun. Even without using his Stand, Mista is a skilled marksman with a natural talent for accuracy.
7) Yoko Littner (Gurren Lagann)
I’m a huge anime fan, and honestly, finding truly skilled gunslingers is pretty uncommon, especially female ones! That’s a big part of why I love Yoko Littner so much. She’s a key character in Gurren Lagann – she shows up when this massive Gunman attacks Simon and Kamina’s village, offering help. We don’t get a ton of backstory about her, but we learn she used to live in an underground village near Giha that was wiped out by gas, which is what forced her and the others to come to the surface. It’s a really compelling part of her story!
Yoko’s abilities are similar to those of her teammates, who use Spiral Power to battle Gunmen and other enemies. She’s also incredibly fast and strong, making her a powerful fighter. However, Yoko is unique because of her skill with guns – she often uses firearms in combat, and has even been seen using arrows. Her main weapon is a powerful electric sniper rifle capable of disabling Gunmen, and she keeps a pistol hidden in her hair as a backup.
6) Gene Starwind (Outlaw Star)
Outlaw Star is an exciting space adventure that blends the thrill of galactic piracy with the feel of a classic western. The show is a fun and easy watch, largely thanks to its main character, Gene Starwind – a skilled pilot and troublemaker. Gene has a mysterious past; as a child, he survived an attack by space pirates that killed his father, escaping in a small pod. Now, as an adult, he gets the opportunity to search for a legendary treasure with his ship and crew, and this quest completely changes his life.
Gene is a versatile fighter, skilled in many different combat styles. He’s quick on his feet and usually wins his battles, though his overconfidence sometimes causes problems. His primary weapon is the Caster Gun, an old-fashioned firearm he carries and uses only when necessary. The gun is incredibly powerful – a single bullet can be lethal or cause severe injury – but Gene always tries to avoid inflicting serious harm, despite being a highly accurate marksman.
5) Death the Kid (Soul Eater)
Soul Eater is an anime about a world where people can transform into powerful weapons. The main character, Death the Kid, is a Meister – someone who can use these weapons. He’s also the son of Death, created from a piece of his soul. After his father is defeated in the manga, Death the Kid takes his place as the new Lord Death and head of the Death Meister Academy.
Death the Kid is a powerful supernatural being with amazing potential and the ability to heal quickly, giving him an advantage over his peers. However, he still depends on his Demon Twin Guns – Liz and Patty Thompson – twin sisters who can change into his signature M9 pistols. By using the Lines of Sanzu, he can combine the guns into the even more powerful Death Eagle. He can also manipulate the Sanzu to transform the twins into a destructive cannon. Death the Kid can even fire bullets fueled by his own energy, allowing him to disable or defeat opponents.
4) Revy (Black Lagoon)
Even today, Black Lagoon is a standout anime from the 2000s, known for its intense action and exploration of difficult topics like violence, trauma, and the endless cycle of crime. What sets it apart is its strong, often violent, female characters, particularly Revy, the skilled gunslinger of the Lagoon Company – a group of mercenaries operating in the fictional city of Roanapur. Revy is arguably the most famous female anime character to primarily use guns, and her tough, no-nonsense personality is a big part of her appeal.
Revy, also called Rebecca Lee, is the Lagoon Company’s primary combat expert. She’s a remarkably skilled fighter, capable of easily defeating many opponents at once, making her one of the most dangerous characters in Black Lagoon. She always carries a pair of customized Beretta 92Fs pistols, fitted with longer barrels and decorated with the Jolly Roger symbol. Revy is an incredibly accurate shooter, and her ability to dodge bullets is almost beyond human limits.
3) Alucard (Hellsing)
When it comes to anime featuring vampires, Hellsing and its follow-up, Hellsing Ultimate, are among the most popular. Both shows center around the Hellsing Corporation, an organization dedicated to battling the increasing danger of vampires attacking humans. Their most powerful asset is Alucard, considered their ultimate weapon and last resort against formidable opponents. Because of his power, Alucard only takes orders directly from the Hellsing family, who task him with eliminating supernatural threats.
Throughout the Hellsing series, Alucard is consistently portrayed as an incredibly powerful vampire, and the Hellsing Corporation has further boosted his abilities through experimentation. While he possesses many powers inherent to his vampire nature, he’s particularly famous for his skill with firearms, making him one of anime’s best gunslingers. He initially fights with a .454 Casull pistol, a large and heavy weapon that reflects his immense strength. Later, in Hellsing Ultimate, he acquires the Jackal, an even larger pistol firing explosive rounds capable of penetrating armor and delivering devastating damage.
2) Vash the Stampede (Trigun)
Trigun brilliantly combines the classic wild west with science fiction, and its popularity led to a reboot with Trigun Stampede and Trigun Stargaze. The story takes place on the harsh, resource-scarce planet No Man’s Land, where crime and bounty hunters thrive. The main character, Vash the Stampede – nicknamed the Human Typhoon – is a skilled gunslinger infamous for his incredible power and the widespread destruction he leaves in his wake.
Vash, despite being known for incredible gunfights, is actually a pacifist who travels the dangerous landscape hoping to help people and spread a message of love and peace. He avoids fighting whenever possible, but often finds himself forced to defend himself, resulting in some of the most iconic battles in anime history. His primary weapon is a .45 Long Colt revolver, originally created alongside one made for his twin brother. He also carries a hidden gun built into his prosthetic arm for emergencies.
1) Spike (Cowboy Bebop)
Cowboy Bebop is now considered a classic anime, beloved for its original idea, exciting action, and heartwarming story about a group who become like family. The show creates a cool, futuristic atmosphere, blending elements of detective stories with a space western feel, as the crew of the spaceship Bebop travels the galaxy hunting bounties. One of the crew members, Spike Spiegel, often seems relaxed and carefree, even though he’s actually very skilled at things like fighting, flying spaceships, and performing magic tricks.
Spike has a dark past, once being a key member of the dangerous Red Dragon Crime Syndicate. He escaped that life by faking his own death, wanting to leave the violence behind. Though he often appears laid-back on the Bebop, Spike was formerly a formidable fighter, especially when working alongside Vicious. When a serious fight breaks out, he quickly focuses and excels, preferring to use guns even though he’s also skilled in hand-to-hand combat. His preferred weapon is a customized Jericho 941 R pistol, complete with features like a laser sight. He’s also a skilled pilot, capable of expertly maneuvering and weaponizing the Swordfish II fighter jet, which is equipped with both machine guns and missile launchers.
