Over time, a vast number of Mario games span an array of genres, creating room for Nintendo’s developers to introduce numerous iconic characters. With so many games under their belt, it’s understandable that fans would tire if all we got were Mario and Luigi. Regrettably, some remarkable characters have been sidelined or not received the leading roles they merit.
I have created a collection of characters from Nintendo’s Mario series who haven’t received enough love (in terms of attention in games). These eight characters should either return or take on larger roles in upcoming Mario games. The list is organized alphabetically, so don’t assume any ranking significance.
1) Daisy
In simpler terms, Princess Daisy from the Mushroom Kingdom has emerged as one of the top athletes and a fan favorite in the Mario Party series. Additionally, she made her debut as a playable character in a Super Mario game called “Super Mario Bros. Wonder”. At present, her popularity is on the rise.
It’s likely that we’ll soon have a game centered around Daisy. Since Princess Peach has had her moment in the spotlight a few times, it would add some variety and fun if Peach and Daisy worked together to rescue the Mario brothers.
2) Mouser
In the game “Super Mario Bros. 2”, Mouser first appeared, but since then he’s been relatively absent. We’ve seen Ms. Mowz in “Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door”, but Mouser has mostly faded into obscurity beyond some cameos in Smash Bros. Let’s bring him back! Mouser is an entertaining adversary that Nintendo could really explore, especially by utilizing some of his numerous aliases from the cartoon series.
3) Mushbert
Check out how awesome Mushbert is! In his solitary appearance in the game “Mario Party Advance“, Mushbert is a Toad who has a passion for anime and always wears sunglasses even indoors. I can’t fathom why Nintendo hasn’t reintroduced this awesome character into their lineup of characters.
4) Pom Pom and Boom Boom
In the game “Super Mario 3D Land,” Pom Pom and her partner Boom Boom debuted as bosses on the airships. Since then, this dynamic duo has made appearances in various spin-off Mario games such as “Super Mario Maker 2” and “Super Mario Party Jamboree.
Yet, these two characters are part of Bowser’s top-tier squad. It would be fantastic if they played significant roles in a fresh Mario RPG, adding depth and charm to the team.
5) Poopa La Koopa
We don’t have much information about Bowser’s grandfather. On the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, Bowser himself stated that his motto was “cheat, beat, and be merry!” beyond this, he has never been discussed. I believe it would be intriguing if Nintendo explored the concept of time travel, allowing the Mario Bros. to go back in time and meet the Koopa who set Bowser on his villainous journey.
6) Roy Koopa
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, it never hurts to have more Koopalings joining the Koopa family in my game world! You know, I’ve always had a soft spot for Roy with his stylish sunglasses, but truth be told, I’d be equally thrilled if Lemmy, Wendy, or any of the gang showed up.
7) Waluigi
Similar to Daisy, Waluigi has made appearances across various Mario games throughout the years. It’s quite fitting that he debuted in Mario Tennis, as it appears he was engineered for success in Mario-themed sports games. Despite his widespread recognition, Waluigi remains a secondary character and hasn’t headlined a game of his own yet.
It seems like it’s high time for Nintendo to develop a version of “Luigi’s Mansion” featuring Waluigi, the long-legged, purple villain. Though Luigi has had numerous leading roles throughout the years, there’s still a void when it comes to Waluigi. Let’s bridge that gap, Nintendo! Give Waluigi his own adventure and let him shine.
8) Wanda
In the 1993 game “Mario and Wario,” Wanda made her debut. In this game, Wario had placed buckets on the heads of characters like Mario, Peach, and Yoshi. The objective was to control these characters along a specified path using Wanda. This gameplay style resembles that of Lemmings, and apart from this instance, Wanda has mostly been limited to minor appearances within the broader franchise.
Instead of advocating for the resurrection of that puzzle game format, it seems overdue for Wanda to reappear in a supporting role. This could be through a small appearance in the next major Mario game or even as a new character in the DLC roster for Mario Kart World. I kindly request you to consider bringing Wanda back into the spotlight again.
