In simpler terms, for many DC Comics fans, the term “Absolute Superman” is somewhat elusive. Some readers may find it less captivating compared to other initial titles in the Absolute series, while others consider it equally impressive due to its distinct and intriguing narratives featuring diverse interpretations of classic heroes. One notable difference among these collections lies in the portrayal of villains, particularly in “Absolute Superman,” where a longtime Batman adversary becomes Superman’s primary enemy for this particular storyline.
While it’s exciting to witness a Batman nemesis being reinvented for Superman, it would also be delightful if some traditional Superman villains received the “Absolute” makeover too. The following seven characters come to mind as potential candidates:
1. General Zod
2. Lex Luthor
3. Brainiac
4. Doomsday
5. Parasite
6. Metallo
7. Mr. Mxyzptlk
1) Lex Luthor
Fans have long hoped to see Lex Luthor, a significant character from the original Superman universe, make an appearance in the “Absolute” series. So far, he’s been missing, which stands out considering his importance in the main storyline. We’d love to see this change soon.
In terms of what the Absolute Lex Luthor might represent, there are numerous possibilities, but one intriguing notion could be to reverse roles and portray him as a protagonist instead. He could potentially transform into an honorable character, driven by his benevolent nature. If any universe was suitable for turning Lex Luthor into a true hero, it would undoubtedly be the Absolute one.
2) Parasite
In simpler and more conversational terms:
Rudy Jones, often known as “The Parasite,” has been a long-standing enemy of Superman. Known for his ability to absorb energy, he could prove to be a powerful asset for Lazarus Corp. Typically portrayed in comics, he’s likely one of the rare villains who would maintain his evil nature in this world. With an entertaining set of powers that can counteract most characters he comes across, it would be exciting to see him in this universe. Moreover, adding a bit of chilling factor to the storyline is always intriguing.
3) Livewire
In a simplified and engaging manner: Livewire, a beloved DC character known for their radio show antics in Metropolis, first gained fame in animated series before moving to comics. Although not quite as popular as Harley Quinn, Livewire has captured the interest of many fans. We’d love to see Livewire join our Absolute universe – whether as an ally or adversary for Kal. Another potential candidate for the Lazarus experiment, Livewire’s arrival would be thrilling.
Among the few potential allies for this world’s Kal, Livewire would prove incredibly beneficial in numerous aspects. Currently, Kal finds himself alone beyond Sol, and he desperately requires additional assistance. If Livewire views Kal as a sort of kindred spirit, it would be fascinating to witness their alliance unfold in future events.
4) Mr. Mxyzptlk
In simpler terms, Mr. Mxyzptlk, who is often considered the most entertaining adversary of Superman across all universes, brings an element of light-heartedness to the Man of Steel. He’s rumored to be a unique character in the multiverse. His frequent appearances in darker universes seem to be his usual modus operandi. Interacting with a more brooding version of Superman (Darker Kal), Mxyzptlk could either provide a refreshing change or cause trouble for Superman.
5) Jax-Ur
The Animated Series”, bringing him back now as a substitute for Zod could be an exciting nod to the past.
6) Toyman
In the Absolute universe, Winslow Schott – nicknamed Toyman due to his penchant for creating deadly toys – might provide a lighter adversary for Superman. With ordinary toys transformed into lethal devices, he could easily blend in as an antagonist. Whether he’d ultimately be on our side or not is debatable, but if reimagined as a hero, Toyman could prove valuable to Kal-El. If they decide to give him one of his iconic giant mech suits, watching Toyman in action would undoubtedly be thrilling!
7) Lobo
The Leading Figure could remain largely unaltered for a similar impact, and we believe he’d be ideal for the role of “Absolute Superman.” Given his history of often challenging Superman in combat, their battles would be thrilling in this grittier setting. An erratic version of Kal-El facing off against an unrepentant assassin would offer a fresh and captivating dynamic. And considering that Lobo is set to debut in the forthcoming “Supergirl” film, the circumstances couldn’t be more opportune.
8) Superboy-Prime
In simpler terms, Superboy-Prime is a controversial yet beloved character among Superman enthusiasts. Bringing him into our universe (the “dark universe”) could offer intriguing social commentary, as he often represents fan behavior that can be detrimental. Seeing him arrive to criticize this universe’s flaws would be entertaining, even though his presence might not be entirely suitable at the moment.
