8 Years Later, A Newly Added Netflix Thriller Is Officially A Major Hit With Millions of Views

Achieving a spot in Netflix‘s Top 10 is considered a prestigious accolade for any film. This exclusive list usually features fresh projects that Netflix is heavily promoting, like the popular K-pop themed series “KPop Demon Hunters,” or unexpected hits such as “Unknown Number: The High School Catfish.” However, with Netflix continually adding new content, it can be difficult to foresee what will make it to the top. The month of September 2025 is particularly intriguing due to the inclusion of the Shrek franchise on the streaming platform, attracting both old and new viewers to the beloved ogre and his companions. Yet, despite claiming three spots in the Top 10, Shrek does not take the crown as the top film this month.

Currently holding the ninth position on Netflix’s latest Top 10 Movies list is the 2017 critically acclaimed film “Wind River.” Starring Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner, who are both known for their roles in the Marvel Universe, this movie finds them playing government agents tasked with solving a murder on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. Instead of saving the day as Captain America or Iron Man, the duo must navigate Taylor Sheridan’s dramatic mystery. With over two million views on Netflix in recent days, it’s no wonder that “Wind River” has left viewers captivated by its many plot twists.

Wind River Shines a Light on a Real Issue

As an ardent cinema enthusiast, I must say, playing the role of FBI Agent Jane Banner in Wind River was a chilling experience. The residents of this desolate land seemed forgotten, with regular brutal murders that often led to dead ends in investigations. But Agent Banner, paired with the enigmatic U.S. Wildlife Agent Cory Lambert, wasn’t about to let this case slip through our fingers. We dug deep, pulled at every thread until we could bring some semblance of justice for the victim’s devastated family.

During the creation phase, Sheridan recognized the delicacy surrounding the narrative of Wind River. He considered the theme so significant that he felt it required his unique touch to be portrayed effectively.

Taylor Sheridan, the filmmaker behind “Wind River”, shared that the story was deeply personal for him. He felt compelled to ensure it was portrayed in a way that resonated with his vision, given its sensitive subject matter. If the outcome wasn’t satisfactory, he accepted full responsibility for it.

Thanks to the diligent effort of Sheridan and his team, the film “Wind River” not only proved successful at the box office, earning $45 million on an initial investment of $11 million, but also gained widespread recognition from critics. It was even nominated for the Caméra d’Or at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival – the same event where Sheridan received the Un Certain Regard for Best Director accolade. Fortunately, viewers no longer need to travel to France to appreciate “Wind River”, as it is now accessible for streaming to anyone who subscribes to Netflix.
