9 Huge 2027 Fantasy Movies We Already Know About, Ranked by Excitement

As a movie critic, I’m keeping a close eye on 2027 – it’s shaping up to be a phenomenal year for fantasy! While sci-fi often dominates the box office, fantasy is poised for a major moment, with nine big titles already scheduled. What’s exciting is the variety – we’re talking everything from animated musicals for kids, to the next installments in established fantasy series, and even brand new, sweeping adventures geared towards adults. It’s a fantastic time to be a fantasy fan!

Fantasy films are behind some of the most successful movie series ever, like Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Shrek, which have all created unforgettable worlds. Several of these franchises are coming back in 2027, along with some brand new fantasy movies, and here’s a ranking of them all, from least to most anticipated.

9) A Minecraft Movie Sequel

A follow-up to the 2025 film, A Minecraft Movie, is planned for release on July 23, 2027. Jared Hess will once again direct, and Chris Galletta is returning as a co-writer. While details about the plot and cast haven’t been announced yet, the film will likely feature Alex, who was introduced in a post-credits scene at the end of the first movie.

The first Minecraft Movie made a lot of money, but it wasn’t a well-made film. The sequel will likely include similar humor and references to the Minecraft game, but it’s unlikely to be a significant improvement, which makes it hard to get excited about.

8) How to Train Your Dragon 2

A live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2 is scheduled to come out in 2027, specifically on June 11th. Many of the actors from the first live-action film are expected to reprise their roles. Cate Blanchett will return as Valka, Hiccup’s mother, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will play the villain, Drago.

While some people enjoyed the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, it doesn’t really improve upon the animated original. It largely retreads the same story, without adding much new, and unfortunately, the visuals aren’t as appealing. The upcoming second film seems likely to follow suit, offering a similar experience to the first.

7) Margie Claus

Warner Bros. Pictures Animation is releasing a new animated movie called Margie Claus on November 5, 2027. Melissa McCarthy stars as Margie Claus, Santa’s wife, who has to gather a team of former reindeer to save Christmas when Santa disappears. The movie is directed by Kirk DeMicco, known for films like Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, Vivo, and The Croods.

Margie Claus shows promise, but the plot of someone saving Christmas after Santa disappears feels overdone. While focusing on Mrs. Claus is a fresh angle, Melissa McCarthy’s films are often hit-or-miss, which makes this movie less appealing.

6) Frozen 3

Disney has announced both Frozen 3 and Frozen 4. Frozen 3 is scheduled to come out on November 24, 2027. While details are scarce, most of the original voice actors are expected to return. The Frozen movies have been very successful, and the third installment has the potential to be great. However, there isn’t a huge demand for another Frozen film, and the story felt complete after the second movie – there aren’t any major loose ends that need to be tied up.

5) Bad Fairies

Warner Bros. Pictures Animation is set to release the animated fantasy film Bad Fairies on May 21, 2027. Directed by Megan Nicole Dong and Olivier Staphylas, and written by Deborah Frances-White, the musical features songs by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss. Cynthia Erivo stars as a fairy who leads a rebellion.

Cynthia Erivo has been consistently delivering strong performances, and following her success in Wicked, it’s wonderful to see her involved in a brand new animated film. The movie boasts a lot of skilled people working on it, and we’re hoping it all results in a fantastic final product.

4) Shrek 5

The fifth Shrek movie is scheduled to come out on June 30, 2027. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are all returning to voice their characters, and they’ll be joined by new cast members Marcello Hernández, Skyler Gisondo, and Zendaya, who will play Fergus, Farkle, and Felicia respectively. Walt Dohrn is directing, with Conrad Vernon – who co-directed Shrek 2 – also involved. The plot is mostly a secret, but we know it will feature Shrek and Fiona’s children as grown-ups.

The last two Shrek movies haven’t been as strong as the originals, making it difficult to get excited about Shrek 5. However, the recent success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish shows there’s still plenty of creativity within the Shrek universe. With a talented new cast and the return of a director from the beloved Shrek 2, there’s reason to be optimistic about the next installment.

3) Children of Blood and Bone

Paramount Pictures will release a film adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s popular fantasy novel, Children of Blood and Bone, on January 15, 2027. The movie, set in a vibrant Afro-fantasy world, follows a young woman’s journey to bring magic back to her community. The cast includes Thuso Mbedu, Tosin Cole, and acclaimed actors such as Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Cynthia Erivo, Viola Davis, and Regina King.

The movie adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone has been in the works for years. Development began even before the book was published, but the project stalled when Disney bought FOX and the film rights eventually expired. Now, with Paramount taking over, the movie is finally moving forward, and its ambitious scope and rich world are generating a lot of excitement.

2) The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum

Fans can soon revisit the world of The Lord of the Rings in a new live-action film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which is scheduled to be released on December 17, 2027. Andy Serkis is directing the movie, and it will include appearances by Gandalf and Frodo. While the story will feature these characters, it’s currently unknown if Ian McKellan and Elijah Wood will return to play them on screen.

While The Hobbit films had their ups and downs, fans are really looking forward to going back to the world of The Lord of the Rings, even if the new story, like The Hunt for Gollum, is more focused. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Middle-earth brought to life on screen, and the 2027 release can’t come soon enough.

1) The Legend of Zelda

A new live-action movie based on The Legend of Zelda is scheduled to come out on May 7, 2027, and will be produced by Columbia Pictures. Wes Ball, who directed Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, will direct the film. The screenplay is being written by Derek Connolly, known for Pokémon Detective Pikachu, and T.S. Nowlin, who wrote The Maze Runner series. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will play Link, and Bo Bragason will portray Princess Zelda.

Recently, movies and shows based on video games have been very successful, with hits like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, The Last of Us, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. A Zelda movie could be next, and fans are excited! The world of Hyrule is legendary, and bringing it to life with real actors is a thrilling idea. With a talented team working on it, the 2027 release can’t come soon enough.
