Tsuyoshi Takaki’s manga series, Black Torch, ran in Shueisha’s Jump SQ magazine from 2016 to 2018. Takaki has created other manga works, like Heart Gear and Rose Guns Days Sorrowful Cross Knife, published through Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+, Jump SQ One, and other magazines. Though it only released 19 chapters before ending, Black Torch is now getting a new life as an anime. The series had faded from the memories of Shonen Jump readers, but animation studio 100studio—founded in 2018—is bringing it back. An anime adaptation was announced earlier this year, and recently, the studio released a key visual and official trailer. Kei Kamabaki, who directed Quality Assurance in Another World for 100studio last year, will also direct Black Torch.
The new anime series is scheduled to debut in the summer of 2026, though the specific release date and number of episodes are still to come. Based on the length of the original manga, it will likely be a short, single-season series. Known for its distinctive supernatural elements, exciting action, and surprisingly well-developed characters, Black Torch is generating buzz. The anime’s release coincides with the 10th anniversary of the manga. While it doesn’t currently have a huge following, the recently released trailer looks captivating. Viewers will be able to watch with subtitles in six different languages, and more information about where it will stream will be shared soon.
What Is The Plot of Black Torch?

Jiro Azuma is a teenage boy who can talk to animals, but this gift makes him an outcast. At 17, he’s trying to live a quiet life with his grandfather, using his ability to help animals in need. However, Jiro keeps getting into scrapes, frustrating his grandfather who hopes he’ll make the Azuma family proud.
Jiro’s unique abilities come from his family’s history as a powerful line of ninjas. His life changes dramatically when he rescues a black cat named Rago, who appears to be just a normal animal. However, Jiro soon discovers Rago is actually a powerful, ancient spirit called a mononoke, locked in a long battle with humans. Rago is being hunted by others of his kind, who want him to join their destructive plans.
Jiro bravely steps in to protect Rago from a dangerous spirit, but is seriously injured in the process. Rago then uses his own power to save Jiro’s life, leading Jiro on a quest to defeat other hostile spirits.
