’90s Cartoon Reboot & TMNT Connection!

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sparked a wave of TV shows featuring anthropomorphized animal heroes, such as Wild West C.O.W.-Boys from Moo Mesa, Biker Mice from Mars, Street Sharks, and Extreme Dinosaurs. However, among these cool cartoons, only one shares a link with TMNT: Ryan Brown, the creator of Wild West C.O.W.-Boys from Moo Mesa, who was an artist, inker, and toy designer for Mirage Studios, the same studio behind TMNT. Now, it seems that the 1992 ABC Saturday morning cartoon about the cowboy cows of a mutant mesa in the Wild West of 1870 is gearing up for a revival.

The Nacelle Company, known for acquiring the rights to Brown’s “Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa” in 2023 (as reported exclusively by ComicBook), is pushing ahead with the return of this animated series as part of their universe, the NacelleVerse. Established by Brian Volk-Weiss, creator and director of Netflix’s “The Toys That Made Us”, the NacelleVerse has already brought back classics like “Robo Force”, “Biker Mice from Mars”, and the toy-inspired “Barnyard Commandos”.

The C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa has been cherished by fans for more than three decades, and we’re excited to bring it back in a grand fashion to a new group of enthusiasts,” said Volk-Weiss, CEO of The Nacelle Company, speaking to Variety. “This revival embodies everything we adore – creativity, nostalgia, and plenty of emotion – and it’s a crucial element in what we’re creating within the NacelleVerse.

Back in the ’90s, I was part of an extraordinary TV show that ran for two seasons on ABC, named “Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa.” This series featured my fellow cow heroes – Marshal Moo Montana, the Cowlorado Kid, and Dakota Kid – who were unlike any other law enforcers you’ve seen. Just like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, they were a special team of galloping, lassoing, fearless protectors, but instead of turtle shells, they sported cow hide!

As reported by Variety, the revamped eight-episode series “Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa” will once again grace CowTown with characters such as saloon owner Lily Bovine, rancher Cowlamity Kate Cudster, and young cowboy Cody Calf. Alongside this animated reboot, Nacelle and Oni Press will introduce “C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa: Origins”, a four-issue comic book series. This prequel storyline will delve into the past, explaining how the C.O.W.-Boys originally joined forces following a strange comet that transformed the Western plains into something “cow-metized”.
