Manny Jacinto has been involved with numerous franchises, but one slipped through his fingers. The star of “Freaky Friday” is primarily recognized for his portrayal of drug-dealing DJ Jason Mendoza on “The Good Place,” a role he subsequently followed with a stint in the hit film “Top Gun: Maverick.” More recently, Jacinto assumed the role of the Stranger in “Star Wars: The Acolyte,” where he wore a grinning mask and helmet. In this series, set during the High Republic Era, his character, a Sith Lord, took on Amandla Stenberg’s Osha Aniseya as an apprentice. Previously a Jedi Padawan, Osha had murdered Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae) and later became the Sith’s disciple, replacing Sol in her new role as the Sith’s acolyte.
Despite the fact that the “Star Wars” series concluded with a cliffhanger, implying a second season, Lucasfilm decided to cancel the Disney+ series in August last year. Created by Leslye Headland, this show was set 100 years before the events of “Episode I: The Phantom Menace.” The planned storylines for Osha and the Stranger were unfortunately shelved when it was announced that the series would not be continued.
In a chat with ComicBook related to Freaky Friday, Jacinto expressed his interest when asked about possibly reappearing in the Star Wars universe. “I’d be thrilled to do it again,” he said, showing his affection for that character, that galaxy, and that team.
He went on to say, ‘I’ll make it clear.’ The world of Star Wars is vast, encompassing countless galaxies. If the fans are interested, I’m eager and willing to participate.
Last year, Jacinto revealed Headland had planned “for us to do three seasons, not just this one.”
The actor expressed during Fan Expo, several months after the series’ cancellation, that there’s a unique charm in knowing things have an end. He added, “I’m not sure if I’d participate again, but three seasons and a movie would have been phenomenal. There was so much more to uncover with the second season.” In simpler terms, he felt that having a limited run made it more precious, and he wished they could have continued for three more seasons and a movie.
In the same month, Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, revealed why they chose to end The Acolyte. He stated this to Vulture, explaining that due to the high production costs associated with the show, its viewership numbers weren’t strong enough to justify a second season.
Disney has since introduced a prequel novel titled “The Acolyte: The Crystal Crown” focusing on Dafne Keen’s character Jecki Lon and Charlie Barnett’s character Yord Fandar, as well as a Marvel one-shot comic featuring the Wookiee Jedi named Kelnacca.
On August 8, the movie titled “Freakier Friday” will be released in cinemas. This film features Jamie Lee Curtis, Lindsay Lohan, Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Mark Harmon, and Chad Michael Murray.
