Matthew Goode acknowledges the weight of his role as Adrian Veidt (Ozymandias) in “Watchmen” from close to two decades ago, with big names like Jude Law and Tom Cruise also being considered for the part. At a young age, he seized the opportunity that others missed, but looking back, he has one major regret about his portrayal – his accent. The dual voices he used for Veidt weren’t universally appreciated by fans, and maintaining them was challenging for him as well. In a recent interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Goode shared that if given another chance, he would have opted for a simpler approach with his accent.
Goodness gracious, if only I hadn’t agonized over it,” Good said. “You see, I wish I hadn’t attempted to imitate a German accent for someone who is openly American in public and then a softer version of a German-American accent. It would have been less complicated if I had simply stayed true to his natural accent instead of causing confusion.
However, it was an exceptional encounter, with outstanding performances, especially from Patty Wilson and Billy Crudup – who remains a cherished friend of mine. The joy I shared while working with Billy Crudup! He truly embodies one of the most talented actors out there, let me tell you. In the same interview, Good expressed thoughts about his initial mindset when offered the role, and the anticipation surrounding more renowned actors potentially claiming it.
He stepped into his fitting room, finding Jude Law’s visage on everything around him. Reminiscing about this moment, he admitted, “I must say, I was pleasantly surprised and somewhat stunned to discover I’d been chosen for the role. It’s unclear what made Zack Snyder take notice, perhaps it was The Lookout that caught his eye. Nonetheless, having Tom Cruise in the film would have been exceptional, but the cost would have been prohibitive.
As a movie enthusiast, I found myself thoroughly impressed by Zack Snyder’s directorial prowess, as well as the exceptional performances delivered by the rest of the cast. Upon its release, I shared my thoughts with Ain’t It Cool News, expressing my decision to give Rorschach’s adversary, Veidt, a partial German accent. This choice was rooted in the backstory provided for him in the graphic novel – Veidt’s parents were affluent immigrants from Germany. However, unlike many of his contemporaries, Veidt chose to relinquish his inheritance and build his wealth independently, embodying the self-made American dream. To further emphasize the character’s duality, I decided that subtle hints of this hidden heritage would emerge in private moments, underscoring Veidt’s complex identity.
