The Hulu App Is Going Away (and What That Means for Users)

Starting in 2026, you’ll notice some changes with Hulu – it won’t be a separate app anymore. Last Wednesday, Disney revealed its plans to merge Hulu with its existing streaming platform, Disney+. Instead of using two different apps, Disney intends to roll out a single combined app for both services next year. Although the standalone Hulu app will disappear, you can still choose to subscribe to each service individually – there’s no compulsion to combine them.

Today, Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO, along with Hugh Johnston, the CFO, revealed a significant advancement in enhancing our streaming service. They discussed the integration of Hulu into Disney+ during their quarterly earnings call on Wednesday (as reported by Variety). This integration will bring together an impressive array of entertainment, combining top-tier brands and franchises, engaging general entertainment, family programming, news, and leading live sports content within a single application.

They stated, “By crafting a unique streaming service, we aim to offer subscribers an extensive variety, ease of use, high quality, and advanced personalization. This improvement should boost our capacity to expand profitability and margins in our entertainment streaming sector by increasing user engagement, reducing cancellations, and generating advertising revenue opportunities, along with operational efficiencies that could lead to future savings, which we can then reallocate to the business.

What Does the Hulu and Disney+ App Integration Mean for Users?

Combining both services on a single technology platform, as Disney explains, leads to cost savings in the long run. The company sees this integration as an opportunity to offer combined advertising sales. For international viewers, Hulu is scheduled to replace the Star tile on Disney+ starting this Fall, though the exact date for this transition remains unspecified. Lastly, Hulu’s live TV subscribers will be moved to Fubo, a service largely owned by Disney. The main goal of this integration is to enhance the overall user experience by incorporating Hulu into the Disney+ app.

The process of incorporating these updates has reportedly commenced, with Iger and Johnston disclosing that enhancements will be rolled out on Disney+ within the next few months. These changes are aimed at enhancing the app’s functionality. The merging of Hulu into Disney+ might not come as a shock, given that Disney has held a significant share in Hulu for quite some time. However, in June, Disney officially acquired NBC Universal’s stake in Hulu, making it fully owned by Disney. Last year, the company initiated the process of incorporating Hulu’s content into the Disney+ app to attract more subscribers to Disney+.

Integrating Hulu into Disney+ seems like a shrewd move for the company, given that Disney+’s performance so far has not been as impressive compared to other streaming platforms. Although Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm originals were expected to drive the platform’s success, this hasn’t fully materialized yet. Shows such as WandaVision and The Mandalorian, produced by these studios, have indeed enjoyed some success, but Disney+ hasn’t matched the success of its competitors, particularly Netflix, in the streaming market.

In addition to unveiling plans for integration, the company has indicated it will mimic Netflix by no longer disclosing subscriber counts for Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN+ starting from now. At present, users can combine a subscription to Disney+, Hulu, and Max into a bundle, offering access to all three streaming platforms at a reduced rate compared to purchasing them separately. It remains uncertain if this decision will affect the current bundle offer in the coming year.
