Avengers: Secret Wars May Have to Leave Out a Major Marvel Hero

Following the massive cast reveal for “Avengers: Doomsday”, it’s evident that this Marvel Cinematic Universe film and “Avengers: Secret Wars” are on a collision course, intersecting across various realms of the Marvel cinematic multiverse. It’s not only the casts of projects like “Thunderbolts”, “Black Panther”, and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (alongside other MCU properties) that are merging. Even non-MCU productions, such as the original “X-Men” films, are being incorporated into the narratives of “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars”. Given that the concept of “Secret Wars” in the comics involved gathering numerous superheroes from different dimensions, this isn’t unexpected.

As a die-hard film fan, I must admit that the epic scale of the Avengers movies never ceases to amaze me. Yet, when it comes to the upcoming Secret Wars film, there’s an unfortunate reality we have to face: one contemporary superhero favorite will likely be omitted from the storyline. This is quite ironic given this particular hero has a rich history of traversing multiple realities on the big screen.

Will Miles Morales Show Up in Avengers: Secret Wars?

In terms of fitting characters, it’s quite logical for Miles Morales/Spider-Man (played by Shameik Moore in the Spider-Verse films) to appear in Avengers: Secret Wars. This is because he has become almost synonymous with superhero movies that explore multiverses. Although films like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Flash, which also deal with multiversal themes, received mixed reactions from audiences, the two Spider-Verse movies have been universally loved by moviegoers. Miles Morales isn’t just a beloved character in contemporary Spider-Man comic book history; he represents what a successful multiverse superhero movie should be.

Placing this version of Miles Morales in the live-action Secret Wars movie would be an obvious choice, given his impressive comic book legacy. Notably, Miles Morales has played a crucial role in past Secret Wars storylines, as demonstrated in the 2015-2016 comics where he was not merely a fleeting character but a major player alongside figures such as Doctor Doom, Doctor Strange, and Molecule Man, among others.

Similar to how the initial Avengers film echoed the first Avengers comic storyline with the main superhero group battling Loki’s schemes, introducing Miles Morales from the Spider-Verse films in a Secret Wars scenario would be a delightful tribute to the original comics. Above all, this character is incredibly entertaining and endearing, making it hard to imagine objections to his return. Regrettably, circumstances beyond even Galactus or The Watcher may thwart this guest appearance from taking place.

Why This Spider-Verse Cameo Likely Won’t Happen in Secret Wars

As a movie enthusiast, I must confess that the issue at hand revolves around the exclusive ownership of Miles Morales’ “Spider-Verse” by Sony Pictures. In contrast, Tom Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker/Spider-Man is a joint effort between Marvel Studios and Disney, as evident in the crossover success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” This collaboration has made it relatively straightforward to blend Disney and Sony Marvel cinematic universes.

However, the animated “Spider-Verse” remains under the sole control of Sony Pictures Animation. References to other Marvel adaptations within these titles are drawn from Sony-owned films such as “No Way Home” and “Venom,” rather than Disney-controlled productions.

It’s plausible to envision Sony striking a deal where Miles from the animated universe could appear in “Secret Wars”. Yet, the significant divide between Sony and Disney’s Marvel properties within the “Spider-Verse” franchise suggests it might be challenging for Morales to feature in “Secret Wars”. This is exacerbated by the fact that the current release date of “Secret Wars” in December 2027, which falls six months after “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse”, seems to make this appearance unlikely.

It seems unlikely that Sony would allow Miles Morales from the “Spider-Verse” movies to appear in multiple live-action films slated for 2027, even if one is released after the third Spider-Verse feature. Moreover, the MCU’s reluctance to blend live-action characters with those originating from animated series makes it less probable that Miles Morales will appear in “Avengers: Secret Wars.” However, while it appears that Miles won’t be participating in this superhero adventure, there remains a glimmer of hope for a crossover. Given the multiverse’s potentialities, as Miles Morales has learned, anything could happen. Intriguingly, “Secret Wars” might introduce an entirely new live-action version of Miles, thus maintaining the distinctiveness of the animated “Spider-Verse.

Avengers: Secret Wars hits theaters on December 17, 2027.
