Amanda Seyfried reveals iconic role she auditioned SIX TIMES for and lost out to a rival star

There was a role that Amanda Seyfried wanted so badly she auditioned for it a whopping six times. 

Last week, I was absolutely thrilled to hear Amanda Seyfried, the brilliant Mamma Mia star who’s turning 40 this year, disclose on the In the Envelope podcast that she auditioned numerous times for the role of Elphaba in Wicked! As a die-hard fan, I simply can’t get enough of her talent and passion for these iconic roles.

She mentioned that she currently holds a position where auditions aren’t required, but she has shared that she auditioned on six separate occasions for the production of Wicked in the past.

‘Because that had to be really just right,’ the Mean Girls star said. ‘And I like, I loved it.’

In a recent episode of Happy Sad Confused, Amanda discussed her audition for Wicked that took place in March.

She confidently shared, “I was thoroughly ready for it, and let me tell you, I’ve never had such a strong sense of confidence in my voice as I did during the auditions.

‘And that’s kind of what I got out of it,’ Seyfried told host Josh Horowitz.

She went on to say, “I still believe there’s a purpose behind every event, and let me tell you, I had the privilege of singing alongside Cynthia, which was an experience I’ll never forget.

In November, Cynthia expressed in an interview with The New York Times that it came as absolutely no shock to her upon finding out that Ariana Grande, aged 31, had been cast as Glinda.

Ariana remembered saying at the moment, ‘I’m thankful,'” she said. Meanwhile, Cynthia chimed in with, “I’m relieved, as it turned out not to be the two women I was auditioning against.

Although Cynthia didn’t mention who else she auditioned with, Seyfried disclosed in 2022 that she had tested for the role of Glinda. However, it was unclear whether Seyfried auditioned together with Cynthia.

She tried out for a part while simultaneously working on The Dropout, where she portrayed the disgraced scientist Elizabeth Holmes. This performance earned her an Emmy award.

Amanda has come to terms with not getting the role of Glinda. In fact, she openly complimented Ariana for her outstanding portrayal.

‘I do, again, think everything happens for a reason,’ she said.

Approximately a dozen years back, Amanda relinquished the opportunity to play the character Gamora in the hit movie Guardians of the Galaxy, which starred Chris Pratt.

Regarding near-misses, Seyfried openly discussed the chance she had to play a role in the initial 2014 superhero movie directed by James Gunn, which was inspired by Marvel Comics.

During the same interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast on March 20, she openly acknowledged that she perceived the role as being somewhat risky when it was initially presented to her.

She remarked to Josh Horowitz that it isn’t beneficial for one’s acting career to be involved in the initial Marvel film that fails.

Initially, I assumed that with its talking tree and raccoon characters, this would mark the beginning of Marvel’s downfall and signify the end of my beloved Chris Pratt’s career. But boy, was I off base!

Originally from Allentown, Pennsylvania, this individual didn’t envision Gamora’s potential part – later portrayed by Zoe Saldaña – as a gamble because of Gunn’s involvement. Gunn was not only the director but also co-wrote the script for the project.

She praised the filmmaker by saying, “He’s brilliant, he’s entertaining, and he’s simply remarkable in his craft. He has an uncanny ability to turn anything into a masterpiece.

In my line of work as a lifestyle guide, I must admit there were moments that sent a shiver down my spine. I found myself at a critical juncture in my professional journey, where the stakes were high, and I yearned to maintain a balance between pushing boundaries and preserving my well-being. I wasn’t keen on sacrificing my peace for the sake of work.

The film, titled Guardians of the Galaxy, turned out to be an enormous success, earning an impressive $773.4 million worldwide and investing only $195.9 million in its production.

Regardless of the triumphs of superhero movies, Seyfried remains firm in her choice to follow her instincts instead of accepting the role.

She declared that she had experimented with green screen work, but it didn’t suit her taste, and she’s content with all the choices she made. She explained, “I created it for my own sake at the time I created it. It was beneficial to me at that moment, and it still is today.
